About Pinedale Field
The Pinedale natural gas field is situated in southwest Wyoming and ranks among the largest natural gas fields in the United States. The first exploration well on the Pinedale anticline structure was drilled in 1939. Limited exploration activity followed until 1995 when the nearby Jonah natural gas field was discovered and resulted in renewed leasing activity in the Pinedale anticline area. Successful commercial wells were developed by Ultra Petroleum Corp. in 1997 and Pinedale field has been actively developed ever since. Pinedale Anticline - Wyoming's Cultural Geology Guide
The Pinedale Anticline is vitally important for the nation’s energy needs. Looking out at the sagebrush landscape, when driving south of town, it is hard to believe that this geologic anticline includes one of the largest gas fields in the world. Since drilling began in the late 1990s, this area has provided nearly 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to the nation...and up to 40 trillion cubic feet to be recovered in the coming years. Wyoming is 5th in the production of natural gas in the United States. More than half of U.S. homes are powered by natural gas. The Pinedale Anticline in Wyoming helps power U.S. homes.
