Spectacular Wildlife Scenes - Whitewater Draw, Arizona
In this video, I stitched together some of my favorite footage from a 3-day camping stint at the Whitewater Draw Wild Life Area in southeastern Arizona.
Scenes include an estimated 15 - 20,000 Sandhill Cranes taking flight at sunrise, a passing squadron of 11 Javelinas and massive flying balls (murmurations) of Yellow-Headed Blackbirds bursting forth into the sky.
Remarkable wildlife viewing plus beautiful sunsets and sunrises! We were so pleased to be able to make a return visit this year.

Dry Camping Fun at Whitewater Draw AZ
Feb 2015 found us RVing through south eastern Arizona. My wife loves photography so while researching a place to camp I found out about Whitewater Draw Wildlife area, close to Tombstone.
Every winter thousands of Sandhill Cranes hang out in the shallow waters here. The refuge allows free overnight parking for RVs in a small roundabout area. Perfect! Every morning just before sun rise the cranes take flight filling the air with thousands of birds. Quite the amazing sight but also amazing sound wise as they begin to cackle excitedly as the dawn breaks.
In this video I'll give you a look at the overnight camping area, the early morning flight of the birds and some other highlights from our short 3 night visit. Also at the end I have a collection of my still images I took during the visit.
We had a good time and met some other cool RVing folks while there. I highly recommend a stop over if you love bird watching and photography. ;)

Spectacular flight of Sandhill Cranes - Whitewater Draw Arizona
Awesome, raucous, elegantly flowing flight of Sandhill Cranes, thousands of them, set against the amber glow of the Chiricahua mountains at first light....wow, I could hardly believe it. The shots are from Whitewater Draw and the south Sulphur Springs Valley west of McNeal, Arizona in early February. Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis)

Every winter thousands of sandhill cranes make Arizona their winter home. The State's largest concentration of these magnificent birds - more than 20,000 of them - put on a spectacular show daily at the Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area in southern Arizona. Sandhill Cranes
On January 9, 2019 Holly joined 6 other birders for a trip to Whitewater Draw State Wildlife Area near McNeal AZ to see the congregating Sandhill Cranes. When we arrived only a handful of cranes were at the ponds because they lift at dawn to feed in the surrounding agricultural fields. Shortly after 12:30 pm the sky began to fill with the sound of calling cranes as they returned to the ponds for a midday respite. We estimated a minimum of 12,000 cranes, but this was a very conservative estimate.
My apologies for the wind in the audio. The technology to edit it out is beyond my editing skills! :)

Meet the Industry: Starbar Farm and Ranch
As part of Local First Arizona Foundation's video series highlighting local agribusinesses across the state, we met with Starlene Moore and Barbara Sherry with Starbar Farm & Ranch in McNeal, Arizona.
Highlights:
- Starbar Farm and Ranch has been developing their own unique cross bred cattle and pigs, descended from heritage breeds, to bring out the best genetics in their livestock.
- The ranch's innovative seed to feed fodder system allows the ranch to cut their water consumption and improve the health of their animals by sprouting nutritious barley feed in a water-wise, contained environment.
- Starbar provides a significantly healthier, higher quality alternatives to industrially farmed beef and pork that proliferates our conventional food system.
