Escaping Forest Fire at Yosemite National Park
We decided to take a short trip up to Yosemite National Park to check it out before it got cold so we could go again next year on a bigger trip and have more of an idea what to expect. Our hotel manager guy talked us into going on the Vernal Falls hike with Freckles because it was apparently dog friendly. Turns out, not so much and it's not an easy hike, its a hard hike if you check the all trails app. But somehow we did manage to make it all the way up to Clark point and back down only to find smoke all over the rest of the park. Turns out the Mariposa Wildfire had started the night before and was polluting the air at the park. We didn't know at the time what was going on and were really worried, especially since we could smell smoke. We decided to go South the next day to the Sequoia national forest the next day to escape the smoke, but it had also traveled all the way down there. Kind of a big bummer. We didn't even get to see El Capitan in its full glory, needless to say we'll have to go back. Freckles managed to do the whole hike tho, couldn't be more proud of him. He was such a champ!

Yosemite National Park - Drive Through
Yosemite National Park is the best-known of a collection of preserved wild lands in California's Sierra Nevada, a spectacular mountain range near California's border with the state of Nevada. Yosemite National Park's fame is mostly due to the striking beauty of Yosemite Valley, whose flat floor contrasts with nearly vertical granite walls over which pour several major waterfalls. In addition to the Valley, Yosemite includes an extensive high-mountain wilderness of mountain peaks, rivers, and meadows, and groves of giant sequoia trees. Yosemite National Park lands extend from 2000 feet (600m) to more than 13,000 feet (3900m) above sea level and cover about 761,266 acres (308,000 hectares), or about 1,189 square miles.
Yosemite lands were first preserved by the United States Congress and President Abraham Lincoln who, in 1864, at the height of the American Civil War, granted them to the people of California for preservation. At that time, the federal government was very limited in size and wealth, and the concept of a national park had not yet emerged, so authorizing California to preserve these federal lands seemed appropriate. This original land grant comprised just under 39,000 acres (15,500 hectares), or about 60 square miles, and included Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias. In 1890, Yosemite was added to the new national park system that had begun with the preservation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872.
The park's 200 miles (320km) of roads give access to many of its features by private vehicle and in some areas by free shuttle bus. To get to know the real Yosemite, however, leave your car or shuttle bus and travel even a short distance on a trail. You don't have to go far to discover the grandeur that can be found here and the values this special place offers. Millions of people have come to Yosemite and left refreshed and relaxed and perhaps a bit more knowledgeable about what they want out of life.
Yosemite National Park is administered by The National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.

Bears Ears—Don't let this special place be erased
In the southeast corner of Utah, the region known as “Bears Ears” covers nearly 2 million acres of dramatic mesas, canyons and arches (and the namesake sandstone-fringed buttes).
This vast stretch of wildland is arguably one of the most culturally significant places in the country, and one of the least protected. The rock art etched and painted into the steep-walled canyons and the ruins, kivas, and other artifacts—that still exist in their original context—don’t just tell a story of the ancient world, they also contribute to what makes Bears Ears a sacred place for Native American tribes to this day.
Despite its irreplaceable value, Bears Ears is under attack—threatened by looting, vandalism and development. Some politicians in Utah see this remarkable landscape as just a place to exploit, which could destroy a physical chronicle of millions of years of natural and human history.
Protecting Bears Ears as a national monument will ensure the wonder of this incredible place will be accessible for all—for all time. With better management, the adventure experience will be enhanced while the region’s monumental resources will be protected.

This hidden gem of a place is located only two hours away from Downtown Los Angeles. Known as a refuge for a variety of wildlife, Wind Wolves Preserve boasts an impressive wilderness for hiking and camping. On this trip, I have a terrifying encounter with a rattlesnake while I stupidly look for other animals like bears, mountain lions, bobcats, and elk. I went on this trip during the late spring, just after the wildflowers had bloomed and died. Much of the green grass faded into a majestic gold but it was still beautiful. My final goal was to make it to the reflection pond, but during one of California's worst droughts, I was out of luck.

Wildfire scorches brush and trees along northwest edge of Yosemite park
A wildfire raging along the northwest edge of America's Yosemite National Park gained strength on Saturday morning as firefighters scrambled to protect nearby mountain communities.
The fire held steady overnight, but officials said firefighters didn't get their usual reprieve from cooler early morning temperatures on Saturday.
As of yesterday (Friday), the park had burned only about 11,000 acres (4,452 hectares) in the park, all of that in remote wilderness. We know there's been some growth in that overnight, but it's pretty modest growth, said Tom Medema, a National Park Service spokesman.
After burning for nearly a week on the edges of Yosemite, the fire moved into the northwest boundary of the park on Friday.
We have some major obstacles we're still facing. One being inaccessible steep terrain, dry vegetation and just extreme fire activity, said Ashley Taylor, a US Forest Service spokeswoman.
Dry fuel and hot weather have combined already to make this the 16th largest fire in California's history.
More than 2,600 firefighters and a half dozen aircraft are battling the blaze.

The hunt for Forrest Fenn's $2 million hidden treasure
The secret is hidden in a poem that starts like this: Begin it where warm waters halt.
Zack wrote an entire feature filled with maps, illustrated clues, and even more video. You can read and watch here:
Sometime between 2009 and 2010 an 80 year old man by the name of Forrest Fenn trekked out into the Rocky Mountains and hid a bronze chest filled with over $2 million dollars worth of treasure. The secret to the location of the treasure is contained within a six stanza poem. Forrest Fenn's treasure, as it's come to be known, has captivated men, women, and children around the country and world and has lured many people to the Rocky Mountains in the hopes that they'll find the gold.
