The Great Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park
On a last minute tip, we changed up our plans to experience what we were told was a once-in-a-lifetime experience - the annual Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park in the Black Hills of South Dakota. 1300 bison are herded by cowboys and cowgirls into pens for an annual health checkup.
Though it was cold and muddy, we had a wonderful time, and have a few tips for you if you're looking to give it a shot.
The Buffalo Roundup happens the Friday of the last weekend in September each year and is accompanied by an arts festival that spans the whole weekend.

Wildlife Loop
Wildlife of Wind Cave National Park & Custer State Park, South Dakota
On our visit to Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota, the elevator for the cave tours was out of service for maintenance. Without being able to explore underground, we hit the roads in search of the abundant wildlife that Wind Cave National Park has to offer. We saw prairie dog towns and were able to get up close to hear the sounds they use to communicate, we saw grazing pronghorn antelope and of course, our favorite, buffalo! Nearby, Custer State Park has a wildlife loop that you can drive where we were suddenly surrounded by a large herd of buffalo. To experience these majestic creatures in such large numbers and so close will be something we never forget!
