Description: We went to the border between Eastern Finland and Russia, near Kuhmo, to spend two nights watching bears, wolves and eagles. This video is from the first night in a hide overlooking a large open area of marshland known as 'paradise'. Food is left regularly in this location, so the wildlife knows that it's a good place to check. This time there was a whole pig left out on the marsh and that attracted a lot of animals - far more that I was expecting to see! It was absolutely amazing to finally see wild bears and wolves in the wild - I'm half Finnish and this was something I'd wanted to do for many many years. It was also very humbling to be in the presence of these beautiful animals, and such a privilege to see them so close - certainly an experience I'll never forget!
NOTE: Bears and wolves are not particularly dainty eaters and they had a whole pig to work on... I've not shown any of the really gory bits in the video, but at the same time, the most interesting behaviours I recorded were around the carcass, so be aware of that..!
I took a wide selection of equipment to the hide and (unusually) used almost all of it! I had the 300mm f/2.8G VR II and 500mm f/5.6E PF VR for most of the wildlife photography but I was also very glad to have the 20mm f/1.8G and the 70-200mm f/2.8E FL VR for some of the video clips. I had a microphone pointing out of the hide and that allowed me to capture some audio of the various birds and the bears growling (as well as the hide exterior rustling in the wind). I also took the power pack and was able to keep everything charged throughout the ~15hrs in the hide. This was probably the most intense continuous photography session of my life!

Description: We went to the border between Eastern Finland and Russia, near Kuhmo, to spend two nights watching bears, wolves and eagles. This video is from the second night in a hide overlooking a small pool in the forest - food is left regularly in this location, so the bears know it's a good place to come and check! This was a much prettier location and the weather was better, so I concentrated more on photography and I think I've got some cracking images ????
Unlike the previous night at the 'paradise' hides, there were only small scraps of salmon hidden around the lake, so the bears were a lot more relaxed and watching them felt more natural. Once again it was absolutely incredible to be in the presence of these beautiful animals, and such a privilege to see them so close. This trip was certainly an experience I'll never forget, and while it was rather expensive, I hope I'll be able to do more trips like this again in the future!
I took a wide selection of equipment to the hide and again I actually used most of it! I used the 300mm f/2.8G VR II and 500mm f/5.6E PF VR for most of the photography but I was also very glad that I'd taken both the 20mm f/1.8G and the 70-200mm f/2.8E FL VR for some of the video. In this location the bears were sometimes so close that the 500mm was too long, especially when I wanted to also include their reflections in the frame! I also took the trusty USB power pack and was able to keep everything charged throughout the ~15hrs in the hide!
Unfortunately, due to an issue with my audio adapter for the Osmo Pocket, I lost all of my vlogging audio from the hide and so have had to edit the video a little differently and add some pieces to camera from home!
This is the second of two videos, watch part 1 here:

WE WERE 2 METRES FROM A BROWN BEAR IN FINLAND!!!
We were just 2 metres from a huge brown bear in Finland. In fact, we saw more than 10 wild brown bears in total with the Martinselkonen Bear Watching Safari!
Wild brown bears are common along Finland's eastern border nearby Russia. We went to see them in the Suomissalmi region about 1 hour south of Hossa.
The bear watching safari runs for about 5 hours in total, an easy afternoon activity, where you will have a very high chance of seeing wild brown bears.

See why Bear Watching in Finland is totally incredible, and something you have to do..
Join me, Gary Bembridge of TipsForTravellers.com, as I get excited by my video of ten brown bears I saw bear watching at Karhu-Kuusamo in Finland. The company running the viewing (Bear Kuusamo) have a number of sites close to the Russian-Finnish border. You sit in wooden viewing sheds and they guarantee a 99% chance of seeing bears. They put food out in the evenings and so the bears have come to know the area will have food. In this video I also answer the time old question do bears sh*t in the woods?....!!!!!!!!

If you would like to take photos of wild bears, wolves and wolverine then a perfect choice is to go and visit Lassi Rautiainens animal kingdom in the wilderness of Finland. This area is probably the Scandinavian answer to Yellowstone. All film and photos are taken with Sony a7rii. Mostly with Canon 300 mm f2,8 and teleconverters. Some high speed recording at 120 fps, played at 25 fps, used frame blending in fcp x.
Vil du oppleve ville bjørner, ulv og jerv kan du reise til Lassi Rautiainens rike i Finland. Eventuelt på en gruppetur sammen med fotomagasinet Natur&Foto, da vil du få en opplevelse du aldri vil glemme. All film og foto tatt med Sony A7Rii
