Jeremy Scahill: Dirty Wars | Talks at Google
Jeremy Scahill comes to Google to talk about his new book, Dirty Wars: The World is a Battlefield.
In Dirty Wars, Jeremy Scahill, author of the New York Times bestseller Blackwater: The World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army, takes us inside America's new covert wars. The foot soldiers in these battles operate globally and inside the United States with orders from the White House to do whatever is necessary to hunt down, capture, or kill individuals designated by the president as enemies.
Drawn from the ranks of the Navy SEALs, Delta Force, former Blackwater and other private security contractors, the CIA's Special Activities Division, and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), these elite soldiers operate worldwide, with thousands of secret commandos working in more than one hundred countries. Funded through black budgets, Special Operations Forces conduct missions in denied areas, engage in targeted killings, snatch and grab individuals, and direct drone, AC-130, and cruise missile strikes. While the Bush administration deployed these ghost militias, President Barack Obama has expanded their operations and given them new scope and legitimacy.
Dirty Wars follows the consequences of the declaration that the world is a battlefield, as Scahill uncovers the most important foreign policy story of our time. From Afghanistan to Yemen, Somalia, and beyond, Scahill reports from the frontlines in this high-stakes investigation and explores the depths of America's global killing machine. He goes beneath the surface of America's covert wars, conducted in the shadows, outside the range of the press, without effective congressional oversight or public debate. And, based on unprecedented access, Scahill tells the story of an American citizen marked for assassination by his own government. As US leaders draw the country deeper into conflicts across the globe, setting the world stage for enormous destabilization and blowback, Americans are not only at greater risk—we are changing as a nation. Scahill unmasks the shadow warriors who prosecute these secret wars and puts a human face on the casualties of unaccountable violence that is now official policy: victims of night raids, secret prisons cruise missile attacks and drone strikes, and whole classes of people branded as suspected militants. Through his reporting, he exposes the true nature of the dirty wars the United States government struggles to keep hidden.
About the Author: Jeremy Scahill is National Security Correspondent for The Nation magazine and is a Puffin Foundation Writing Fellow at The Nation Institute. He is the writer, with David Riker, and a producer of the documentary feature film, Dirty Wars, which won the Cinematography Award for U.S. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 2013. IFC Films releases Dirty Wars in theaters June 7, 2013 throughout the United States.
Scahill has reported from Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen, the former Yugoslavia and elsewhere across the globe. Scahill is a frequent guest on a wide array of programs, appearing regularly on The Rachel Maddow Show, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Democracy Now!. He has also appeared on ABC World News, CBS Evening News, NBC Nightly News, BBC, al Jazeera, CNN, The NewsHour, and Bill Moyers Journal. Scahill's work has sparked several Congressional investigations and won some of journalism's highest honors. He was twice awarded the prestigious George Polk Award, in 1998 for foreign reporting and in 2008 for his book Blackwater.
In 2013, Scahill was named one of nine recipients of the Donald Windham-Sandy M. Campbell Literature Prizes at Yale University.

Bernie Sanders Rally at the Colonial Theater 3/10/19
United States Sen. Bernie Sanders' pitch to bring his progressive vision to the White House was welcomed by supporters Sunday in the Granite State. We live in an unprecedented moment in American history, the presidential candidate told attendees of a rally in the Colonial Theatre in Keene, N.H., following one in Concord, N.H. When you live in an unprecedented moment, you need an unprecedented response, which is what this campaign is about. Marit Bjerkadal of Bellows Falls has been waiting to see the senator speak and said there were a million reasons to come to Sunday's rally.
This time, the stars aligned and I got here, the Bellows Falls resident said while trying to locate a friend as the venue quickly filled with other supporters and Roots of Creation performed. Kristan Tilton of Troy, N.H., who worked on the 2016 campaign and described it as a wonderful experience, said she was not fully committed to Sanders this early on but was glad to see the senator move the Democratic party to the left. Universal health care resonates with Tilton, who said no one should go broke paying medical expenses. Christian Drake recently moved to Keene and hopes to catch as many of the Democrats running for presidents who come through town while campaigning. There's a lot more choice this time, he said, planning to vote for whoever will bring dignity back to the United States since the election of Donald Trump. I feel like we lost so much. It's denied to the average American and whoever is in a targeted or minority group. Sanders, who called Trump the most dangerous president in our lifetime and an embarrassment to the country, thanked attendees for being part of a political revolution that will transform the U.S. and work for all Americans. We will no longer accept 46 percent of all new income going to the top 1 percent, he said, noting that many people across the country work two to three jobs and live paycheck to paycheck. We will no longer accept a situation in which, in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, our younger generation will, if we don't turn it around, have a lower standard of living than their parents — lower wages, higher debt, unaffordable housing, less mobility — not to mention that we are now leaving our children with a national debt of $22 trillion. Tristam Patoine, a student at Keene State College, said it was no secret that his classmates will have some of the highest student debt in the U.S. when they gradate. If I stay in New Hampshire, I'll also find it very difficult to establish a life here, he said onstage before Sanders appeared, citing high property taxes and very low minimum wage in the state.

Traditionally, banks and other financial institutions sell their own products. However, competitive mortgage have made the role of the mortgage broker more popular. In well developed mortgage markets, mortgage brokers are the largest sellers of mortgage financial products for lenders. A mortgage broker acts as an conduit who brokers or helps clients qualify for mortgage loan products on behalf of individuals or businesses.
The role of the Mortgage functions to find a bank or a direct lender that an individual seeks with a specific loan product that the individual is seeking.
Mortgage Brokers in the United States are regulated to ensure compliance with banking and or finance laws in the jurisdiction of the consumer through the National Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS).
The major difference between a mortgage broker and a loan officer is that a mortgage broker works as an intermediary between the buyer and the lender, whereas the loan officer typically works directly for the lender.

★ About Bernie:
Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.
