Our friends Bobby and Jessica invited us to Napa for Jessica's birthday party - a house party on a vineyard! We said yes (of course!) and flew into SFO where we rented a Silvercar Audi A4 for the drive to Sonoma (Healdsburg) California. This region is also known as the Russian River valley and is known for the pinot noir from here (Napa is about an hour east of this). We went wine tasting at Chateau Diane, then Ferrari Carrano, and eventually ended up back at the vineyard house. We played badminton and grilled out, and had a chef cater a vegetarian dinner for us at sunset (we got some EPIC drone shots!). We ended the night tasting wine and watching movies under the stars - if you ask me it was a pretty amazing birthday. Thanks for the invite Bobby and Jessica, now we have to think of an epic birthday adventure to invite YOU two on!

A Tipsy Tour of Sonoma's Wine Country
Get Lost in Sonoma with Kelley Ferro
You'd never guess that over 400 wineries dot the rolling hills of the rural Sonoma. But with some of the world's most famous wines, this peaceful region is serious about wine production. Kelley takes a tipsy tour through wine country, stopping at some of the most recommended wineries. She indulges in the Bubble Room experience at J Vineyard, meets the owner at Keller Estates, and sips a zinfandel at Dry Creek Vineyard.
Hanzell Vineyards - Sonoma, California
The home of the oldest Chardonnay vines in California, Hanzell Vineyards was founded by James David Zellerbach (later a United States Ambassador to Italy) who acquired 200 acres in the Mayacamas Mountains in 1943 and began planting Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 1953.

Napa & Sonoma Wine Country, California, USA - Drone
Napa & Sonoma Wine Country: Castello Di Amorosa, Ledson, Peju Province, Artesa, Sterling, Far Niente, Darioush, Clos Pegase, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Domaine Carneros, Quixote, Ferrari-Carano, Del Dotto Estate, Chateau Montelena, Bale Grist Mill & Beringer
The Napa & Sonoma Valley is one of the most scenic and beautiful wine country to visit in Northern California. October is a perfect month because the fall colors turns to red & gold which showcases a more dramatic hills & valleys of the vineyards. Because Napa is very close to where we live, my wife and I often spend our weekends there because of its beauty and great places to eat. When I got my first drone, it is here where I practiced aerial videos and revisited the same places where we had gone before for photography. To this day, we are still discovering new wineries and restaurants.
There are over 430 Wineries in Napa Valley and over 380 wineries in Sonoma Valley. An astounding 95% of Napa Valley wineries are family-owned. It was The Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, known as the Judgment of Paris event which placed Napa Valley on the map worldwide. This blind, comparative tasting pitted Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from California against the best wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy in a blind tasting. When the tasting was done, the judges had given top honors to Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. Napa Valley would never be the same and transformed Napa Valley into one of the premiere wine regions in the world.
Charles Krug is credited with establishing Napa Valley's first commercial winery in 1861: including Schramsberg (founded in 1862), Beringer (1876) and Inglenook (1879).
Aside for its wines (especially Cabernet Sauvignon wines), Napa Valley is also renowned for its fine and diverse cuisine. In fact, the region’s 100-plus restaurants have won more Michelin stars per capita than any other wine country in the world. Among the popular Michelin-starred restaurants include La Toque, The Restaurant at Auberge and The French Laundry.
Besides its arts & culture, you can go around the valley by biking or hiking, sip beer and spirits, see the Old Faithful geyser in Napa city of Calistoga, attend museums and music festivals, go shopping, and ride a hot-air balloon at sunrise.

Healdsburg Wine Country Travel Tips
Healdsburg is one of the great wine towns of California and is the perfect place to make your home base for exploring this western part of Sonoma County. Nearby are three famous wine Appellations: The Alexander Valley, the Dry Creek Valley, and the Russian River Valley. On WCG we have wine trails and maps for each of these spectacular wine growing regions. Healdsburg backroads are breathtaking. You will see Redwood Trees, the Russian River, rolling hills of vineyards, and of course wineries. What a delight! In Healdsburg and surrounding its famous Plaza, there are many wine tasting rooms. You can spend an entire afternoon sipping wine walking from one wine tasting bar to the next.
For dining, the Healdsburg restaurant scene is fantastic. Food critics rave about the varied cuisines and the fresh ingredients supplied by local purveyors. Outside of the town you find other favorites restaurants including the Farmhouse Inn and the Madrone Manor. There is plenty of lodging in town, but be sure to book early, Healdsburg is a popular destination for wine and foods lovers.
Most of the wineries in Sonoma have picnic areas. What fun it is to pack a lunch and picnic in the vineyards. Choices for buying your picnic goodies are Big John’s Market and the Oakville Grocery in Healdsburg, the historic General Store on Dry Creek Road, and the funky Jimtown Store on Highway 128 in the Alexander Valley.
There is much more to do in this area than exploring food and wine. Healdsburg has many boutique shops and art galleries. There are two golf courses or you can head to the resort town of Guerneville and hike among the Redwoods in Armstrong Grove State Park. During the summer months, the Russian River beaches are popular and a fun family activity. Many wineries have Bocce Courts, and that’s always another exciting thing to do.
Our Healdsburg planning guide is packed with all this information and much more. Spend some time with the manual planning your trip, and you are sure to have a fantastic time in Healdsburg wine country.
