Côté Mas Sparkling Wine Tasting
Affordable French bubbles? Oui, ils existent. Savvy wine lovers know that there’s much more to French bubbly than pricey Champagne. The Southern France region of Limoux is not only the birthplace of what many historians believe was the world’s first sparkling wine; it’s also home to Côté Mas---affordable French sparkling wine, produced in the traditional methode champenoise.
Winemaker and vineyard manager Bastien Lalauze will showcase three Côté Mas sparkling wines: Crémant de Limoux Rosé, Crémant de Limoux and Blanquette de Limoux---a traditional Limoux sparkling wine rarely seen in the US. Bastien will explore the origins of sparkling winemaking in Limoux’s Saint Hilaire Abbey in the year 1531; walk you through the vineyards of Domaine de Martinolles, where the Côté Mas grapes are grown; and answer your real-time questions on everything from appropriate food pairings to What is Mauzac? and more.
These wines are part of the portfolio of Domaines Paul Mas, the trailblazing Languedoc winery helmed by fourth-generation winegrower Jean-Claude Mas. Jean-Claude is a pioneer of “the new Languedoc,” an effort to preserve and restore the region’s best vineyards and produce premium French wines at affordable “everyday luxury” prices.

Lemon Zest, Green Apple, Pear
Pink colour, medium deep intensity, youthful and almost foamy bubbles. Young and fresh nose displaying hints of ripe pear, some red berry notes, hints of pink grapefruit. Palate is quite light-weight with a youthful and intense acidity. There’s a slightly creamy texture thanks to the bubbles. There’s certainly a presence of red wine in there, or the sensation of it, like red berries. I also get red citrus like pink grape or blood orange, with a zesty medium towards long finish.
