ALSACE WINE TOUR // Day trip from Strasbourg, France (Strasbourg wine tour)
Join me as I take a half-day trip from Strasbourg, France for an Alsace wine tour. When you are staying in Strasbourg and desperately want to explore the wineries without a car (and let's be honest, you shouldn't be driving anyway), it's best to take a full or half-day trip!
We visit a winery that's been in the family for many generations, have some of my favorite wine on the planet, and visit a new winery that's less than 5 years old and try their very first wine! This is all while exploring the countryside in a cute VW van.
This tour is not sponsored in any way. I just wanted to take you with me.

Top things to see in Strasbourg, France, Les Hospices de Strasbourg Wine cellars
Top things to see in Strasbourg, France, Les Hospices de Strasbourg Wine cellars. The Wine cellar of Strasbourg city hospital
Strasbourg wine museum. This wine cave situated in the medieval basements of city hospital was founded in 1395 and it stands for one of the best proof of rich Strasbourg history. It also represents a close relationship between the wine and health as the wines or the vineyards were donated during centuries by the patients as a form of payment for a quality medical service.
The cave was newly renovated in 1994, and today, it is a home of a specific wine museum featuring more than 40 ancient barrels (the largest of them can hold up to 26080 hectolitres of wine), a wine press dating from beginning of the 17th century and a barrel that is still filled with the wine from the year 1472. This extraordinary wine that is also one of the oldest wines in the world, was served only three times - first tasting was held for the Swiss delegation in 1576, the second one was inspired by the renovation of the city Hospital in 1716 and the last persons who had tasted this wine were the liberators of Strasbourg led by general Lecrerc in 1944. The oldest wine. Today, this 1200m2 wine cellar is the home of closely selected Alsatian wines which are given a permission to mature in its barrels. After a certain period of maturing, these wines are bottled on the spot. Visiting the Cave Historique des Hospices de Strasbourg is one of the best things to do in Strasbourg and is a great wine tour in Strasbourg.

Strasbourg Fall 2019
What a way to end the year. With an incredible trip to Strasbourg. Leaving early in the morning on the Saturday we arrived to see this beautiful city and have a little boat tour on the Rhine. After that with the free time we visited the city famous Christmas market before heading to our local tasting discovery with some wine tasting. The next day we headed to Colmar. A beautiful traditional city which beauty took our breath away, with its amazing atmosphere. Our final destination took us to the sky over the clouds to the castle, Haut-Koenisbourg in Germany. With that done we were lucky enough to get some snow on our way back and have one more fun stop before heading back to Lille. An amazing trip, with amazing people, what else could you ask for?

Emile Beyer-Fine Wines From Alsace France
Emile Beyer Fine Wines From Alsace France. The village of Eguisheim
Research has shown, as is widely accepted, that the Roman legions introduced the growing of vines to Eguisheim, in the early days of this era.
Eguisheim is rightly considered to be the Cradle of Alsace Vineyards. In 810, a cour dimiere with vineyards was given by Charlemagne to the convent of Ebersmunster. In 898 the abbey of the Benedictines in Munster also owned a cour dimiere with vineyards.
In total, in the medieval commune, there were 16 cours colongeres [special provincial courts] belonging to ecclesiastical institutions that sourced their wines here.
In the 15th century, most of the European courts, above all those of Northern Europe purchased Alsace wine. The wine left Eguisheim for Colmar by the river Ill and then we transferred at Strasbourg on the river Rhine. Certain walled vineyards appeared to be more celebrated than others: Eichberg, Pfersigberg and Eguisheim. The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) was a disaster for Alsace: reconstruction had to be carried out as quickly as possible; but soon the more productive wines from the plain started to compete with the wine produced on the hills.
In the 19th century, the Alsace vineyards reached 28000 hectares and no longer exported their produce. There followed a tragic period, when oidium, mildew, and phylloxera threatened its very existence. In 1945 the vineyard only covered 6000 hectares, albeit 6000 hectares on the very best slopes. There then began an unprecedented revolution.
Eguisheim, due to the quality of its production, is now one of the premier wine growing communes in Alsace.

An Alsace Wine Tasting Tour From Basel Switzerland
As we climbed out of the van the rain had lightened up, but not stopped. It had been raining on and off all week. It didn’t bother me too much today because I was about to embark on a fun wine tasting tour, one of several Basel day trips. I have been in Basel Switzerland for a week house and pet sitting. I was lucky to be there for the Fasnacht Carnival (one of Five Fantastic Festivals in Switzerland) and now it was time to enjoy some great wines in the area. Although Basel is in Switzerland, the city borders with France and Germany. We got into the van in Basel city center and about 45 minutes later we exited in the Alsace region in France. Our guide for the day was Colin, an award-winning wine sommelier.
Alsace France
Alsace is a historical region in northeastern France on the Rhine River plain. The Alsace Wine Route crosses 53 different wine districts and is one of the oldest routes in France. The famous Alsace grapes found throughout the French wine regions here are freckled with Instagramable villages and medieval towns. These vineyard vines are home to some of the most sought-after grapes around the world. I wasn’t going to let the rain dampen my mood, I knew we were in for great Alsace France wine tastings tour.
Our Alsace Wine Tour Itinerary
The wine tour included 4 different wineries sampling various French wine at each stop. In addition to a one-hour lunch break in a medieval village.......

WINE TOURISM AT CATTIN WINERY IN ALSACE
Experience Great Alsace Wines !
(Food & Wine) of Alsace with David Jaegle | FOLLOW THAT SOMM
Discover more @
Alsace is a food and wine lover's paradise, and we’re in the town of Ribeauvillé to discover the palate of Alsace, from sausages and pretzels to escargot.
Situated on the borders of France, Germany, and Switzerland, Alsace is a culinary curiosity; a place where foie gras and escargot are as plentiful as pretzels and sausages. Wine4Food headed to the town of Ribeauvillé this summer to discover the palate of Alsace, enlisting help from Cave de Ribeauvillé's Worldwide Exports Manager, David Jaegle.
Cave de Ribeauvillé is a collective of winegrowers who are making some of the most exciting wines to come out of Alsace. Not only do they boast multiple styles of the seven grapes of Alsace (plus Crémant), but they also harvest grapes and produce wines from all three Grand Cru regions of Ribeauvillé. Grand Cru wines in Alsace can only be made of one varietal, but we were lucky enough to tour the Osterberg vineyards with David and discover one of Cave de Ribeauvillé's most unique offerings: Clos du Zahnacker, a blend of Grand Cru Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Riesling. Technically, it's not Grand Cru... but it is grand.
David is born and raised in Alsace, and he was so excited to share with us not only its wines, but one of its most famous dishes: Choucroute, also known as Alsatian sauerkraut. What could be exciting about sauerkraut? As it turns out, SO MUCH. Chef Joseph Leiser of the restaurant Auberge Au Zahnacker was kind enough to show us the entire process of making this quintessential dish. We don't want to spoil it for you, but let's just say choucroute (pronounced shoe-kroot) is our new favorite thing. It is the giant cookie cake of cabbage.
What a whirlwind adventure this was! Thanks so much to David Jaegle for hosting us, to Joseph Leiser for treating us to incredible Alsatian dishes, and to Cave de Ribeauvillé for educating us with their wonderful Alsatian wines.
