Visting Destro Vini, Randazzo Sicily
Since my first years in Sicily I've felt somekind of sadness not growing up with the agricultural knowhow many possesses here. We do not have this richness in Scandinavia.
Secretly dreaming to be a wineproducer, but felt it was too late.
Until I met a 67 years young Scandinavian woman in the airport, who just bought herself a countryside and was preparing the land for wine- and oliveproduce. She just started not knowing anything about it!
Lesson reminded: It's never too late!

Direttore Fabrizio Carrera. Tenuta Delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso
We were offered everything for Indiana; couldn't pass it up! A beautiful wine from Sicily, native Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio; produce a wine with a dark ruby sheen, a nose of dark cherries and tobacco, and a mouthful of red fruit, its finish is lingering with herbaceous tannins. Truly an amazing glass! $22.99 to try; 2 or more gets 20% off!

L' epochè di Giuseppe Russo sui vini dell'Etna (Winemaker Stories)
Down below here there are 4 cement vats of 600 hectoliters
Once there was a lot of wine here
12 thousand gallons each
Nerello Mascalese grape tends to oxidate
and in big barrels it is better preserved
so we have to understand which is the best container
if you want to work on reduction, the large barrel is better
or maybe it's worse, I'm still checking
I have too little experience to say that
Every vintage is a mess here
more or more you learn, the more you learn you don't know anything
The interesting thing of this vintage (2016) it is that it has been a generous vintage
we had lot of grapes
so I was expecting a weak wine
and not all this fruit and concentration
It was not like this during the fermentation
it's like the wine became stronger after
'so you and Scirto are the only producers from Etna, right?'
No, there's also Calcagno
The only problem is that after 15 years I was expecting to have more local producers
after all
someone that followed my example
there are some local ones
they own 30-35 acres
people that could value the place, but they didn't
they maybe tried but not really
We have a tradition here but it's not a tradition of great wines
We don't have a tradition of quality wines here
No matter what they say... only few of them
someone that knew about other Italian or French wines
that tried to develop fine wines in this region
the last one are the Benanti
They started the new deal of Etna wines
but without Franchetti, de Grazia (from Tuscany) and Frank Cornellissen
even the small producer Corellissen played his role here
He allowed the Etna wines to be known
especially for the group of natural wines
Well, in 2003 my father died
He died in the vineyard, feudo di Mezzo, just behind this building
At that time it started the new deal here. So I said... shall I try or not?
So without making a proper decision I started to bottle the wine
and know I'm very happy
before that farming was considered a bad thing
Our generation had the idea of farming as a bad thing
it meant suffering and hardships
And when you're young we refuse those things, right?
the keyword was hardships
and fatigue
hard to send the grapes
every year (in the 90's and before) it was hard to sell the grapes
Sometimes the grapes were left on the plants to rot
because my father couldn't find someone to sell them
The buyer was not looking for quality
but just the low price
this is Calderara Sottona, just until the road
yes Calderara Sottana includes several vineyards
all the Contrada (villages) are a mix of different soils and climates
For example here in Calderara
or Feudo di Mezzo are really big areas
We start from 550mt above the sea level to 700 mt
There are different lava flows of different ages
so not really uniform soil
Really Etna it is not one soil with one type of wine
so I believe that in the next years we'll more properly define those areas
This is a really windy area
we came from an area that was more protected
but when you get here you see that is all open
even the panorama
360 degrees view, from Monti Nebrodi to the Alcantara Valley
the Canal of Alcantara
it is that one that creates this wind
and the Etna..
just in front...
I always walked on this soil
difficult to say
A couple of things on the volcanic soil...
what do you what me to say about it?
surely those are fertile soils
and fertile soils are good for the grape
and them
on volcanic soil
it is interesting to see how they change
because the lava creates a soil that is always different
because the lava flows are form different ages
with different structures and compositions
some places are more sandy, some other more stoney
so it is interesting to see how they change
About the flavor of the wines....
please don't make me speak about the minerality
yes, they are mineral wines, happy now?
and salty
'and smokey aromas too'
actually the most interesting thing of these wines is how they are dynamic
wines that change continuously
in the glass
eternally
we enter into a spiritual dimension
