Wisconsin Maritime Museum USS Cobia Review and Conclusion Manitowoc, WI 3-18-17
L. Michelle and I thoroughly enjoyed the Wisconsin Maritime Museum! I wish I could have more videos to show, but none were allowed in the galleries or the submarine. Our tour guide on the USS Cobia was young but truly knew his history of the sub and WW2. The museum was great! I'm not a big boat guy, but I learned so much about how Manitowoc and the cities along Lake Michigan became important boat and submarine manufacturers in the War. USS Cobia (SS-245) Submarine Wisconsin Maritime Museum Manitowoc, WI 11-30-16
L. Michelle and I would have liked to have seen the museum, but at least we got to see the submarine! The USS Cobia (SS-245) rests in the Manitowoc River, and to me, it gives an eerie feel to the area. Very cool!
Manitowoc and Two Rivers – From Ship to Shore
In this episode of Discover Wisconsin, Mariah and Eric explore the wonders of Manitowoc and Two Rivers from sunken ship to stunning shore. Eric begins by learning about the history and industry of the rivers that flow through Manitowoc and Two Rivers. After exploring the Rogers Street Fishing Village in Two Rivers, he heads to Burger Boat Company to see what the historic company is up to today. He also meets up with some kayakers to do some paddling on the Manitowoc River.
Both the Manitowoc River and the East and West Twin Rivers eventually flow into Lake Michigan, which offers beauty and exploration above and below the surface. At the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Mariah talks with a marine archaeologist about the shipwrecks in the area, and the different ways visitors can learn about, and access the wrecks. She also joins a group of standup paddle boarders at the Manitowoc Marina and takes in an amazing view of the city from the water.
Back on land, Eric explores the Historic Washington House in Two Rivers, and learns how to make the perfect ice cream sundae in the city where it was invented. We also get to know local producers at Pine River Dairy, who have been manufacturing butter in the area for more than 75 years. Eric then heads to Manitowoc’s Pinecrest Historical Village for their annual Pinecrest Plates event, which brings in local farmers and fantastic food for people to enjoy.
And you can’t visit Manitowoc and Two Rivers without spending time on the coast. Mariah flies a kite on the pristine Neshotah Beach in Two Rivers, wanders the beautiful grounds of West of the Lake Gardens, and goes bird watching at Woodland Dunes Nature Preserve. There is so much beauty to be experienced in Manitowoc and Two Rivers and countless ways to do it – from ship to shore!
SUBFEST -- Wisconsin Maritime Museum -2015
Subfest at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum held their first annual SUBFEST on July 10th, 11th, and 12th, this year, 2015. The museum is located in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
28 submarines were built in Manitowoc during World War II at Manitowoc Shipbuilding.
The USS Cobia, a World War II submarine, is moored in the river next to the museum.
Although not built in Manitowoc, she is typical of the submarines that were built here.
The Subcommittee, an organization dedicated to model submarines, was represented by several members. SubRon 6 members Bob Gesking, Pat Habel, and Jim Smith brought several subs for display and to run in the pool. Pat Habel brought a Thunder Tiger NEPTUNE and a WTC. Jim Smith brought his U-boat. Bob Gesking brought the USS HAMMERHEAD (SS 364) – a Manitowoc boat, USS BARB (SSN 596) and USS SEAWOLF (SSN 21). Jerry Clusen (RADM, USN, Retired) was present with a Seaperch ROV which he demonstrated in the pool as well.
The crew of the USS MANITOWOC (LST 1180) was in town for a reunion, and one former crewmember brought his model and ran it in the pond.
The second annual SUBFEST is scheduled for July 8th - 10th , 2016.

Founded in 1969 as the Manitowoc Submarine Memorial Association, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum has grown into one of the largest maritime museums in the region. In addition to commemorating the maritime heritage of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers area and the submarines built here during World War II, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum is now a leader in preserving the maritime history of Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region.
With over 60,000 square feet of space, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum explores the rich maritime history of Wisconsin through exciting and interactive exhibits. A unique collection of model ships and boats, an operating steam engine, displays of historic vessels and marine engines, and the Wisconsin Waterways and Little Lakefarers’ Rooms – special places for children of all ages to learn and play.

Wisconsin Trip: Maritime Museum Manitowoc, WI and the USS Cobia submarine
we went to the Wisconsin Maritime museum where we got to get a tour through the USS Cobia that sits in the water on Lake Michigan in Manitowoc Wisconsin. I could not vlog in the submarine, but some pics were taken and you can find those in my facebook link above.

Little Gulls; Manitowoc WI
On 13 June 2014, I recorded a personal high count of 11 first summer Little Gulls in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin (9 of which are seen in this video). This region of west-central Lake Michigan hosted the first confirmed breeding records of this species in the United States, but then subsequently went absent as higher water levels prevented nesting.

Manitowoc is a city on the eastern shore of Wisconsin, north of Sheboygan and south of Green Bay that John McGivern LOVES! No, we mean it.
Visits to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and exploration of the SS Badger were the beginning of his enchantment. Then he was introduced to beach glass, reminisced with an Evergleam Christmas tree collector, and explored Jagemann Stamping and Briess Malt and Ingredients Co. He had a Diet Coke with Kathie at the Stage Door Pub, made a belt at Leatherwerks and checked in to Dead by Dawn --- not sure that he would ever check out! But the cherry on the top was provided by Beerntsen's Confectionary and Cedar Crest Ice Cream! Yum! What's not to love?
Fair warning to those in Manitowoc: Don't be surprised if some day there's a Manitowoc mailbox with John's name on it. By being so inviting, you asked for it, Manitowoc!
