Beautiful Wiseman's View Drive - Part 1
This is part 1 of 3 in a series that shows how to get to Wiseman's View - and then what you'll see when you get there. Wiseman's View is the premiere spot for easy viewing of the Linville Gorge from the western rim. In this video I show how to get to Wiseman's view from the Blue Ridge Parkway and over to Highway 105 for a rough dirt road jaunt to the parking lot.

Beautiful Wiseman's View Drive - Part 2
This is part 2 of 3 parts of a drive out to Wiseman's View on Highway 105. Wiseman's view is where many people go to see the Brown Mountain Lights and gorgeous views of the Linville Gorge and Jonas Ridge Chain of mountains including Hawksbill Mountain and Table Rock. During this drive I try to tell some facts about the area, and show some video clips of the mountains and gorge from various angles I've shot on my hikes along the ridges. See Part 1 to see how to get to Highway 105 from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here's the link:

Linville Gorge & Wisemans View Complete Info With Handicap Accessible Areas
rom Asheville, it's an easy 60-mile drive to access the western side of Linville Gorge. Wiseman's View offers some of the most spectacular vistas in North Carolina (all the photos on this page were taken there) via an easy 2/10-mile paved trail. From Asheville, take I-40 East to Marion, exiting onto Highway 221 and going north until it intersects with N.C. 183 in the Linville Falls community. Turn right on N.C. 183 and continue one mile to Old NC 105, Kistler Memorial Highway (at large Linville Gorge sign). Trailheads and parking lots, accessing the western section of the Gorge, lead off of Kistler Memorial Highway (gravel surface road - rough in spots). Wiseman's View overlook is about four miles down the road. At night, watch for the Brown Mountain Lights. Along this road, you will pass parking areas for various trails, including Linville Falls, Pine Gap Trail, Bynum Bluff Trail, Cabin Trail, Babel Tower Trail, Sandy Flats Trail, Conley Cove-Rock Jock Trail and Pinch In Trail.
Linville Gorge is one of Eastern America's most scenic and rugged gorges, created by the scouring action of the Linville River. The steep walls of the Gorge enclose the Linville River for 12 miles. The river's swift waters descend over 2,000 feet before breaking into the open levels of the Catawba Valley. Elevation averages 4,000 feet atop Hawksbill Mountain to 2,000 feet on Linville River. The 12,000-acre Linville Gorge Wilderness in the western North Carolina Mountains is part of the Pisgah National Forest.

Fishing the Linville River Gorge, NC
The Linville River Gorge in North Carolina offers some scenic and adventurous fishing opportunities in a hard to reach setting. The brown trout are known to grow plenty big here but with so many deep pools to hide and so much forage to feed on I had trouble catching many. The trails leading to the stream are steep and rough.

The Linville Gorge is located in Burke County, North Carolina. It is famous for it's amazing views from up top, especially from Wiseman's View. This spot is located about 100 yards to the left of Wiseman'd View and provides some breathtaking views. Be careful, though, there are no barriers overlooking the cliffs.

LINVILLE FALLS--Video of Hike up to Erwin's View Overlook of Linville Falls
In May of 1985 my son and I took an all day outing up to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. I had just gotten a Video Camera and it was one of those big ones that sit on your shoulder and you have to carry the recorder separately. We went to Blowing Rock and then on to Grandfather Mountain. The hang gliders were at the mountain that day. From Grandfather Mountain we went on to Linville Falls. This is the video of the hike (almost a mile) up the mountain to Erwin's View Overlook which is the highest point and 3360' high. The main overlooks along this trail are the Upper Falls Overlook, the Chimney View Overlook, and then the Erwin's View Overlook. The video shows all three of those overlooks and the views from each one. Also we see the views along the way--at one point on the trail you will see a tree which goes all the way across the trail--this tree was in the movie The Last of the Mohicans. Also the video shows the Linville River and the rapids and people fishing. The Upper Falls Overlook shows a close-up of the water as it goes over the top. Also you can look up and see the views up high from where we had just come at Erwin's View Overlook. I have another video on You Tube of the day we went to Tweetsie RR and rode the train and I think I will put up the video of Blowing Rock & Grandfather Mt. so you might want to check those out as well. I also have a video (slideshow) of my hike up to Erwin's View in the summer of 2004 and the pictures (stills) I took on that hike.
Old NC 105 (February, 2019)
Took a day trip to Pisgah National Forest via Old NC 105, just North of Lake James State Park. Old NC 105 spans roughly 14 miles overlooking the Linville Gorge Wilderness and has plenty of camping spots along the way. You will also find access to Wiseman's View and Linville Falls along Old NC 105, both must-see locations if you decide to take this lovely dirt road on a beautiful day like we did!

Exploring Linville Gorge Wilderness Area and Old NC Hwy 105
I set out to explore the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area Overland style in my FJ Cruiser and along the way I did some hiking too. I started the days journey on the southern end of the western ridge of the gorge on Old NC Hwy 105 (GPS coordinates 35.77255, -81.90295) and traveled north passing many scenic views, epic camping locations and Wisemans View. On the very north end of Old NC Hwy 105 (GPS Coordinates 35.95146, -81.93504) is Linville Falls, a truly breathtaking sight.
For the eastern ridge I traveled along Table Rock Road starting at it's northern most point (GPS coordinates 35.95127, -81.88290) going south and stopping at Table Rock itself, again, an absolute breathtaking sight. I had no idea North Carolina offered this kinds of scenic beauty.

Buzzards Roost scenic overlook. Very cool spot!
A visit to a remote scenic overlook in Pisgah National Forest in western NC. What makes this place so awesome, aside from the jaw dropping view, is that it is still pretty much in its natural state. No steps, no guardrails, no plaques, and no admission fees!

Viewpoints include Wiseman's view and the Pinnacle. Wiseman's is accessed via a short, paved walk and provides an excellent panorama of the gorge including Hawksbill and Table Rock Mountains. The Pinnacle is situated further south and is accessed via a short section of the MTS trail from a small parking area. The Pinnacle provides 360 views including Shortoff Mountain, Lake James and the Black Mountains.
Our advice: Both viewing areas are accessed from Old NC Hwy 105 which is not a paved road. Although we have seen your average cars on this road, we would recommend a high clearance vehicle at minimum and 4wd if you have that option.
