India Travel Tips | Things You Should Know Before Visiting India
What are some things that you should know before visiting India? How expensive is India? In our India travel tips guide currency tips, transportation, hotels, safety, food and health. We share what we loved about India in terms of travel along with what we hated about India on our trip. Now let's explore travel in India in depth!
Official Exchange Rate = $1 USD = 64.14 Indian Rupee (current as of May, 2017)
Transportation in India (City to city)
1) We highly recommend train travel in India over taking the bus
2) Book your train tickets in advance online (we used cleartrip.com)
3) If you don't book tickets in advance check at major train stations to see if they have tickets reserved for foreign travelers under the tourist quota.
Local transportation
1) If you're traveling at a budget or mid-range level you'll definitely be taking your share of taxis, auto-rickshaws and man-powered rickshaws.
2) Try to know what a ride should cost in advance by researching, asking at your hotel or asking a local
3) Be prepared to bargain as rickshaw drivers often try to rip tourists off
Accommodations in India
1) Hostel in India - can start as low as $2 to 3 USD and upwards
2) 3 star Hotel in India - ($20 to $40 USD)
3) 4 or 5 star Hotel in India - (sky is the limit)
We tried to book our hotels around areas of the city we'd be exploring by day and night. Staying on the outskirts means much longer local transportation time.
Health in India
1) Make sure to get all of your recommend shots and vaccinations before going to India. Check online or with your doctor to find out what you need to get specifically
2) Carry hand-sanitizer and wet wipes to clean your hands and dirty objects you may encounter like filthy door handles
3) Drink only bottled water
4) Have Imodium handy in case you get sick to your stomach
Safety in India
1) Dress modestly (especially if you're a female)
2) Don't arrive late at night in train stations
3) Safety in numbers if you're a female traveler
General Travel Tips for India
1) Don't try to do too much or have too fast of a schedule (slow versus fast travel)
2) Pick a particular region and don't try to cover all of India
3) Mix up smaller cities with bigger cities on your itinerary in India
What to eat in India
1) Research restaurants online on sites like tripadvisor or food vlogs
2) Only eat street food or at restaurants that are busy with locals
3) Ask hotel staff or locals you encounter for recommendations
Budget meals in India can be had for roughly $2 to $5 in USD per person and fine dining get really expensive.
Things we LOVED about India(I love India)
1) Incredible train rides
2) Amazing attractions
3) Diversity of regions in India (how different they are)
4) Beautiful temples, mosques and architecture
5) Great value in terms of what you spend for what you get
6) The sense of adventure not knowing what will happen
Things we HATED about India (I hate India)
1) Getting sick and having stomach issues
2) Getting hassled by aggressive touts, rickshaw drivers and vendors
3) Often not arriving on time or as scheduled
Final Thoughts
India is one of the most adventurous countries we've ever visited as travelers. We loved our time there but it can be a polarizing place. Most people love it or hate.

India Travel Tips | Things You Should Know Before Visiting India Travel Video Transcript:
We've been back in Canada for a while now. And we've been editing all of the video footage we've shot in India and now that we're done with that we thought we should share a few travel tips for India and just maybe talk a little bit more about our experiences. So that is what our video is going to be like. We're going to be doing also kind of like a budget breakdown so if you see us staring down at our computers that is what we're doing. Yeah exactly and this will be a little bit different than the city guide tips we did because we're doing this kind for all of India as a country.
This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine.
People and Places in Mumbai City , India, Oct. 2015
This is my first visit to the main western Indian city of Mumbai ( Bombay). I explored the city alone in the local way. During the day, I visited Gateway of India, Marine Drive and spent the day with locals. These are exciting and interesting first impressions of Mumbai. The video was recorded during a taxi ride from CST to Gateway of India, at the Gateway of India, Walking along the Marine Drive and a drive to Church Gate of south Mumbai.
Foreigner Tries Indian Street Food in Mumbai, India | Juhu Beach Street Food Tour
Come join us as a foreigner tries Indian Street Food in Mumbai, India at Juhu Beach for the first time. Having heard about legendary Mumbai Street Food at Juhu Beach I decided to spend my first day in Mumbai, India sampling delicious Indian cuisine and popular Indian snacks prepared for locals.
I've always dreamed of trying Indian Street Food in Mumbai and I finally had my opportunity. All in all what makes an Indian Street Food Tour so appealing is that you can alternate between savory, spicy and sweet dishes to your heart's content without spending a fortune. In fact, many Mumbai Street Food items cost only between ₹50 to 160₹ Rupees meaning you can pick things up for considerably less than $1 US dollars and at a higher end just over $2 US dollars. The following is a list of the Indian Street Food items I'd tried during my taste test tour at Juhu Beach Chowpatty:
1) Pav Bhaji - (₹160 or $2.23 USD)
A thick vegetable curry of smashed spiced vegetables served with a bun soaked in butter (ghee). The dish originated in Mumbai in the 1850s for textile mill workers.
2) Pani Puri - (₹30 or $0.42 USD)
Panipuri is a round hollow puri (fried crisp) filled with flavored chutneys and chilies. It served as a set of 6.
3) Kulfi Falooda Rabdi (₹120 or $1.67 USD)
Chopped up Kulfi (traditional Indian ice cream) served in a bowl with rose syrup, jellies, milk, cashews and vermicelli. It is a very sweet and refreshing dessert to help cool you down.
4) Ice Gola (₹50 or $0.70 USD)
Shaved ice with syrup on top. I chose the Mango Syrup which was green but I'd recommend trying another flavor.
5) Sev Puri (₹60 or $0.84 USD)
An Indian snack chaat served with puri, onions, vegetables, cheese, chutneys ands, sev (crunchy noodles).
If you're a foreigner visiting India for the first time consider trying Indian Street Food at Juhu Beach. It is a nice comfortable setting and things really come alive when the sun goes down. Here is the exact location:

Foreigner Tries Indian Street Food in Mumbai, India | Juhu Beach Street Food Tour Travel Video Transcript:
Indian fast food. It is nice. It looks delicious. Cheese Pav Bhaji. Cheese Pav Bhaji. Oh look at that. Look at that bread just coated in butter. Oh!
Hey guys! Good afternoon good afternoon. Greetings from Mumbai, India. This is my first day here. And I'm going to tell you what I'm going to go on a little bit of a street food tour. Apparently there is some really good street food stalls around here. So my plan is just to go for a wander. Kind of give you my first impressions of what it is like to be here in India. In Mumbai specifically. A city I've never visited. And yeah go eat some delicious street food.
So I'm already here at the Juhu beach. It was probably less than a five minute walk from my hotel. And it is kind of sprawls in all directions.
Just wrapping up this street food tour and my first day here in Mumbai. That was just pretty much an incredible experience. The thing I love about coming back to India and traveling here is that every time you step out the door there is going to be an adventure. Also I got to eat some really cool street food for the first time and my overall impressions of this area in Mumbai are very good. Like the beach is just an incredible place to hang out. If you are coming to India definitely consider going to this area and also trying this Indian Street Food. OVERNIGHT TRAIN INDIA | SECOND CLASS AC | GOA TO KERALA
We took our first overnight train in India from Goa to Kerala! It was such a great experience on train number 12618. We had second class ac seats for our 15 hour journey from Margao to Ernakulum junction railway station. Throughout this video we give you an idea of what an Indian railway station looks like, how to deal with drunk Indians, what a second class ac sleeper train looks like including a room tour of the berth, and a Indian train toilet review!! Train travel in India is by far one of the cheapest and most affordable methods of transport around the country, with the 2nd class ac train being a favoured method for most travellers. Hopefully this video gives you great insight into what the Indian train system is like and how to travel it!

...ABOUT US...
Hi, we are Erin and Francis, aka the Honeymooners! We are a couple travelling the world for a year on our honeymoon.
In 2016 we travelled throughout South East Asia, and trekked all over the Himalayas of Nepal. We documented the entire trip on our GoPro for our family and friends, but decided to post it all onto YouTube just for a bit of fun as well.
We are newlyweds, happily married since June 2019, and are now living out our dream goal we have had since our last overseas trip, of travelling the world for an entire year on our honeymoon. We have worked so hard towards this goal and want to document the entire journey with you all, so you can join us as we leave our footprints all over this beautiful world.
The world we live in is so diverse and rich with culture, yet the more we travel and the more people we meet along the way, we realise that people share so many similarities no matter what their background is. We love showing these similarities while expressing their cultural differences and hope to capture those moments and show the world.

A Look at Daily Life in Mumbai India
A Look at Daily Life in Mumbai India
Relocating to Mumbai can be an incredible adventure for foreigners. Expat life in Mumbai has a truly cosmopolitan flair while retaining the full “Indian experience”. Our InterNations Guide to India’s largest metropolis covers leisure, transportation, housing, and other key topics.
Mumbai is rich with culture and festivals for everyone to enjoy. Once you move to Mumbai, you’ll find plenty to entertain yourself with in the Bollywood capital of India.
The public transportation in Mumbai is one of the best and most widely used in India, with expats often using trains and the metro to get to work.
An excellent selection of schools and fully equipped expat apartment communities await you in Mumbai.
Just over 22 million people live in Mumbai, making it the second-biggest city in India and one of the most populous cities in the world. The official language of the state of Maharashtra is Marathi. However, local varieties of Hindi, Gujarati, and English, or a mixture of all, are also among the many languages used by Indians from around the country who settled in Mumbai. The literacy rate in Mumbai is 86%, and in such a cosmopolitan, well-educated city it is easy to converse with locals in English.
The rich mix of cultures, religions, and languages can be traced back to the city’s long history as the country’s most popular destination for migrants from both India and overseas. The different religions practiced by the various demographic groups living in Mumbai are an important part of cultural life.
A FESTIVAL FOR EVERY FAITH
Life in Mumbai features countless traditional festivals originating from the city’s various religious groups and spread out across the year. Vaisakhi, for example, is a harvest and Hindu New Year festival celebrated by the Sikh and Hindu population during the middle of April. It includes joyful processions, martial arts performances, and acts of charity.
Diwali or Deepavali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, is very popular with nearly all residents of Mumbai and the whole of India. It takes place either in the last week of October or the first two weeks of November, and — since it’s associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth — it also marks the beginning of the new fiscal year for the Gujarati community in Mumbai. Arguably the most important religious and cultural festival in Mumbai, though, is Ganesh Chaturthi, the birthday of the elephant-headed deity, Ganesha, celebrated for ten days in August or September.
However, it is not only Indian festivals that are highlights of the year in Mumbai; some Zoroastrian festivals as well as Eid al-Fitr (the end of the fasting period for Muslims), Christmas, and Easter are also very much part of the festival calendar of Mumbai’s diverse population. Christmas and Easter are not only part of the Christian year in Mumbai, but are celebrated to some degree by many other Mumbaikars, too.
KEEPING ENTERTAINED IN THE BOLLYWOOD CAPITAL
Of course, there is a secular side to culture in Mumbai as well. Locals and expats alike enjoy the lively entertainment offered in the countless theaters, museums, art galleries, music festivals, restaurants, and nightlife venues. The city also has a rich literary history, with Salman Rushdie being Mumbai’s representative best known among Western expats.
And who could forget yoga, a very important part of life in Mumbai and of Indian culture in general. If you’ve never done any yoga before, now is the time to try it. For useful updates on other events and leisure activities in Mumbai check out what’s hot in Mumbai or asklaila — an online local information service for India.

1. My trip in India consisted of me constantly connecting with locals, hearing their stories and taking their photo. Who am I to reject the local people if they want a photo of me? Why am I more entitled than them? Why is it disgusting of them to ask for my photo, whereas I am allowed to ask for theirs? There is not 1 minute that goes by where I am not grateful of the individuals who give me their time and are vulnerable enough to let me take their picture, I can only give back the same, REGARDLESS of how they choose to use their little phone selfie. Personally, it doesn't bother me.
2. I am not naive to let men talk to men, and take my picture. I fully understand the dangers of certain choices being made in India, but that really does go for EVERY other country, even your own. There are bad people everywhere. BUT i found MORE good people, curious people, warm people in India than what I find in my own country. There is no way a harmless selfie will lead to rape.. MAYBE if I was intoxicated, by myself at night down an alleyway. That is a different situation entirely. And, could happen anywhere, rape is NOT in ANY WAY exclusive to India!
3. On the same note - I did not ONCE get groped by an Indian man. This is a myth that ALL Indian men will grope you or ask you to marry him if you're a white woman. Yes I was asked for photos, yes I was called beautiful, yes I was stared at (EVEN when I was FULLY COVERED in clothing), but NO i was not groped. Have I been groped by a white man in an Australian club, though? YES!
4. I met COUNTLESS beautiful, respectful, intelligent, amazing Indian men. I could tag them in this post, but they all know who they are. And i thank you so much for giving me this respect and kindness. You proved to me that the 'warnings' i got and the terrible things people said about Indian men were wrong. I feel for the women who have experienced something traumatising and violating in India, in fact, as you may know one of my Indian female friends was killed by the hands of a man; BUT I'm no feminist to say that ALL INDIAN MEN ARE BAD, or have bad intentions.
5. Being someone who has solo traveled for 8 years or more, i understand the logistics. I am not a naive white girl, in fact, traveling solo has grown me and matured me a lot. I was 90% with local Indian friends my entire time in India, and NOT because I was scared but because I genuinely wanted to be around local people.
6. Last point - sorry. This video was in fact choreographed. NOT STAGED - please understand what I am writing. Yes, I noticed I was getting a lot of attention in this particular spot in Mumbai, but the men who approached me did naturally, they're not actors. However, I loitered in the middle of the square waiting for them to approach whilst my local Indian male friend filmed. It was for the sake of humour, for blogging content, for interest sake. I'm sorry if anyone thinks it's stupid, or i disrespected myself. I can see how people could form this opinion, however I did not feel disrespected at all. If you can see the light-hearted humour in this video, then thank you, we are on the same page!

Sam + David's Been Here INDIA FOOD TRIP Starts NOW! NEW India Travel Videos On FRIDAYS! Video Transcript:
Hey guys! Greetings from Canada. I have a special series to announce. Recently I went on a three week trip to India with my really good friend David of David's Been Here. We went to 7 different destinations. We met each other in Mumbai and then immediately went to Pune.
Pune is like a really green city a university city. It was like our introduction to Indian cuisine on this trip. We ate a lot. And then from there we went to Hyderabad.
Hyderabad is the home for incredible dosa and biryani. It has some great attractions too.
From there we went to Amritsar and that was one of the coolest experiences that we had on the entire trip. We went to the Golden Temple. We saw the border closing ceremony. We also ate some really cool Northern Indian food.
From there we flew to Bengaluru which is in the far south. It was our first like real introduction to India in the far south.
And then continued south to Chennai. And that was our first introduction really to Indian seafood which was fantastic.
From Chennai we flew to Kolkata a city I've actually been to a couple of times before but never really properly explored. We ate great street food and sweets.
Wen then went to Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat and finished off in Mumbai.
We filmed like a tonne of Indian street food videos, Indian food vlogs, top attractions, travel vlogs, local language guides and apartment tours.
So one of the coolest things about this trip is that David arranged for us to meet with locals in every single destination we went to. Now these were like fans of David's channel. Also they were fellow YouTubers and Instagrammers and small tour operators. And this made the trip honestly incredible.
It was so nice to meet up with friendly locals who showed us unique places to eat, gave us really cool insight and just gave us an extra personality on camera. Everyone we met was like super friendly and I think what is going to make this series extra special is just having that local expertise in each and every video.
And guys the biggest thing off all is that I didn't film with Audrey. She's behind the camera right now. Hello. I really missed her for the 3 weeks that I was gone but I mean uh this is just was a guy's trip!
So I hope you guys really enjoy these videos and be sure to go over to David's channel David's Been Here because he's going to be getting his videos out before we do.
The biggest thing of all guys, I forgot to mention, is this is going to be a Friday series. A double release every Friday it is going to be coming out at 9am and 9pm Eastern Standard Time. So stay tuned for that. Two India travel videos every single week on our channel.

Breakfast Rush in Nagpur | Speedy Guy serving Poha to Crowd | Indian Street Food
On our journey of Nagpur street food tour we discovered this gem of a place called Vicky Poha wala near Kasturchand park. In Morning, this place is packed with locals waiting for their favorite morning breakfast Tarri Poha. This guy in video has super fast hands, he is single-handedly serving poha to a huge crowd. It's really breathtaking to see him working non-stop making dish after dish of Tarri poha and kadhi samosas.

We visited the top tourist attractions of Aizawl including Falkawn village, Lalsavunga Park, Solomon's Temple (Church), Bara Bazaar, Mizoram State Museum, and got a fantastic sunset view of Aizawl.
Aizawl is the most beautiful, clean, and picturesque hill station I've ever been to in India! I was really blown away by this hard to get to and little-explored city. It's so unexplored in India because the airport is 1.5 hours away from the Aizawl and it's situated in the rugged mountains - so travel is not easy or comfortable in the state.
Aizawl, Mizoram, India, is a difficult place to travel to, but you'll be rewarded with natural beauty, friendly locals, and great food if you dare to venture there.
