Russia: Tomsk - a charming Siberian City
Tomsk is a city on the River Tom in the south-west of the great Siberian Taiga. Established in 1604 under a decree from Tsar Boris Godunov, the city was a garrison town and later home to many exiles of the Tsarist regime. In 1830 gold was discovered nearby, thus increasing its importance, but when the Trans-Siberian Railway was constructed, the line bypassed the city, Today this 'backwater' University city is full of character and history, home to the much loved wooden architecture with its fine details......

New wealth in Siberia - From Moscow to Magadan
The Siberian city of Khanty Mansiysk has become extremely rich thanks to oil. In some parts of Russia, villages are emptying because residents seek better prospects, like the ones happening in Khanty Mansiysk. Jelle visits such a village.
Original title: Siberische belofte
What's left of communism? How big are the differences between the poor and the rich? What is the influence of corruption? Is Russia a young democracy (as former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende previously said)? Is it a sovereign democracy (according to Putin) or a fascist regime (as read in The Economist)? Jelle Brandt Corstius is looking for the topics that rule the life of ordinary Russians in Russia.

ROVING REPORT: RR0050/B RUSSIA: COLD CRISIS
Russia's Far East has been hit hard by an unprecedented energy crisis, causing thousands of people to suffer freezing temperatures in their homes. In Vladivostok nearly eighty per cent of houses have been left without heat. Power companies have refused to deliver fuel supplies because local authorities cannot pay their energy bills. In some areas, families have been without heat and water for weeks. Schools and hospitals are suffering; some have been forced to close. In an area where the mining industry has collapsed; life is quite hard enough. Having no fuel to combat the near- arctic cold is a privation too far and the people want something done and quickly.

Колыма - родина нашего страха / Kolyma - Birthplace of Our Fear

Winter arrives in Ukraine as gas dispute with Russia sparks heating worries
Wintry weather has already come to Ukraine's capital Kyiv. Night time temperatures are dipping below zero.
The heating is normally turned on across the country by mid-October but the move was delayed because of concerns over future gas supplies.
Kyiv resident Sergiy Popov said: My radiator is cold and it stays cold. When you come home in the evening, and no one has switched on either the kitchen stove or heater – it's very hard to be in the apartment. I’m afraid to take my clothes off - becau…

SUMMARY
=======
Siberia (; Russian: Сиби́рь, tr. Sibírj;, IPA: [sʲɪˈbʲirʲ] ( listen)) is an extensive geographical region spanning much of Eurasia and North Asia. Siberia has historically been a part of modern Russia since the 16th and 17th centuries.
The territory of Siberia extends eastwards from the Ural Mountains to the watershed between the Pacific and Arctic drainage basins. The Yenisei River conditionally divides Siberia into two parts, Western and Eastern. Siberia stretches southwards from the Arctic Ocean to the hills of north-central Kazakhstan and to the national borders of Mongolia and China. With an area of 13.1 million square kilometres (5,100,000 sq mi), Siberia accounts for 77% of Russia's land area, but it is home to approximately 36 million people—27% of the country's population. This is equivalent to an average population density of about 3 inhabitants per square kilometre (7.8/sq mi) (approximately equal to that of Australia), making Siberia one of the most sparsely populated regions on Earth. If it were a country by itself, it would still be the largest country in area, but in population it would be the world's 35th-largest and Asia's 14th-largest.
Worldwide, Siberia is well known primarily for its long, harsh winters, with a January average of −25 °C (−13 °F), as well as its extensive history of use by Russian and Soviet administrations as a place for prisons, labor camps, and exile.

One of the leading Russian steelworks, which is sitll in operation today, the factory did not have any distinct specialisation. The factory produced twenty sorts of steel, armour plating for ships, artillery instalments, cannons, shells, mines, steel and iron bars, steam crankshafts, surgical and drawing instruments, gun barrels, rifle magazines, railroad wheels, tyres and axles………
