Hanoi, Vietnam: Traveling for $20 A Day - Ep 13
In Hanoi, Vietnam, I got a buffet breakfast, beef pho, bun cha, ice cream, Vietnemese egg coffee, sugarcane juice, four Hanoi beers, a room in a hostel, and explored the entire Old Quarter and western side of the city, all in one day - all for LESS THAN 15 DOLLARS. Seriously, this is the cheapest city I've ever visited.
($20 USD = 445,000 Vietnamese dong)
Here's how I spent my money in one full day in Hanoi:
Hostel bed - 112,000 dong
Breakfast buffet - FREE (included with hostel)
Ice cream - 8,000
Egg coffee - 17,000
Beef pho - 30,000
Fried dough snack - 7,000
Temple of Literature - 30,000
Sugarcane juice - 10,000
Ho Chi Minh Complex - 40,000
Bun Cha - 35,000
Four beers @7k/beer - 28,000
TOTAL COST = 319,000 dong ($14.26 USD)
Oh, and one more thing: the egg coffee I drank in this video is seriously the best coffee I've ever had in my entire life. If you visit Hanoi, you MUST TRY egg coffee.

My name is Kevin Cook. I'm originally from Dallas, TX, but I've been living and traveling in Asia since 2013.
After graduating from university in 2011 and working a few unfulfilling jobs, I saved enough money to move to Asia and work as a teacher for a few years. That opportunity allowed me to travel around and experience new foods and cultures, and ignited a passion for blogging and making videos.
Now I travel full-time and make videos with the goal that I can encourage YOU to pursue your own dream of overseas traveling and living.

The Crafting Futures project in Vietnam concluded with the Craft and Design Challenge exhibition, showcasing collaborative works of the 20 young designers and design students. The project made positive steps towards supporting women and girls in local communities in the revitalising of their craft traditions through connections with contemporary designers and new market opportunities.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the participants, together with Vietnam Rural Industries Research and Development Institute, University of Leicester, Nesta, Kilomet109, Work Room Four and AGOhub for all of the hard work and dedication. This adventure has broadened a new horizon that bridged the gap between traditional artisans and next generation designers. It is a firm proof that there is a potential source of young and enthusiastic designers emerging rapidly in Vietnam.

A video showing Gia Vien hotel in Saigon, it is one of my favourite places to stay when on Visa runs to Vietnam...
Parts of this video include:
0:04 Intro
0:30 VIP room, 28 sq m ($45)
4:00 Bathroom
5:14 Saigon city noise
6:11 Standard room without window ($31)
8:07 Nice bars and restaurants outside the hotel
8:47 Outro
Additional notes:
The Good, the bad and the ugly:
Good:
- Fantastic location for the bars and restaurants of Bui Vien street
- Girl friendly (no extra fees to pay at reception)
- Clean, functional rooms
- Good value for the area
The bad:
- Many rooms are windowless, this might put some people off
- No swimming pool or fitness center
The ugly:
- If you have a room with a window it could be very noisy
Overall: I really like Gia Vien hotel in Saigon, it ticks a lot of boxes and is very good value for the area. I actually preferred the windowless room on this visit as it was much quieter than the VIP room. I would probably book a standard windowless room next time I stay as I'm hardly in the room at all when in Saigon...
Thank you for watching, and subscribe for more videos.
NB: Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City are the same city, the name was changed after the 70s. The locals all call it Saigon so that's what I call it here.

Lotte Hotel Hanoi, Vietnam - Junior Suite (Best Hotel in Hanoi)
As an Expedia +Gold member, I got a free upgrade and early checked in. I arrived the hotel at 11am and the Room Division Manager Jimmy Hoang treated me as a super VIP. He was waiting for me downstairs in the welcome lobby on the ground floor (the hotel lobby is located in 38/F). Then brought me to my suite on the 60th floor directly and check-in there. He and his team even decorated the room especially to help me celebrate the anniversary with my lover. Thank you, Jimmy, for everything. You made our stay unforgettable.
Lotte Hanoi is located in the business area of Hanoi and it’s inside the 2nd tallest building in Hanoi and whole Vietnam. It’s about 15 mins away from the old town.
The junior suite is spacious. The first thing you notice in the room is the stunning bird’s-eye view of Hanoi city. There is a big working table with a lot of stationaries. Not only pen and paper but glue, eraser, correction tape, stapler, post-its and many others I can’t remember. The bed is comfortable. Mable bathroom with separate shower and bathtub.
There is one whole floor of fitness and recreation centre on the 7th floor. Which including a big gym equipped with Technogym equipment, a big swimming pool, a dance/yoga studio, an indoor golf driving range and a big sauna with jacuzzi.
Club lounge is located on the 59th floor. It serves breakfast buffet, afternoon tea and evening cocktails. Dennis, the Club Floor Manager managed the service very well.
What’s make a 5-star hotel outstanding from other hotels is not only the property itself but more importantly are the service. Staff in Lotte Hanoi are very friendly and helpful. They made us feel special and important. I highly recommend this hotel to everyone. Some people would choose to stay in hotels closer to the old town. Trust me, hotels there are very small and overpriced. Lotte would be a much better choice.

4 DAYS IN VIETNAM |4日間のベトナム旅
Direct flights from Fukuoka to Hanoi only take 3.5~4 hours, and run every Tuesday and Saturday, so when Tatsu got 5 days holiday, we knew exactly how we wanted to spend it.
We spent 2 days in Old Quarter, in the heart of Hanoi City, eating all the food, sightseeing, and hanging out with the cool volunteer tour guides from Hanoi Kids ( ). I mention that everything is cheap in Vietnam, but to give you an idea of just how cheap, our centrally located Hotel was $28 USD a night, for a room much bigger than any $100 hotel in Japan.
A bowl of Pho will cost about $2 USD. Tatsu and I could have a filling lunch for about $5 USD. Vietnamese Beer costs about $1 USD, and is a welcoming refreshment on a hot day.
Taxis can scam you, so you'll have to be careful and make sure they use the metre when you are riding, but we could get around town for on average, $3-4 USD per ride. Much cheaper than what we pay in Japan. The 40 minute drive to the airport cost $15 USD by Taxi. In Japan you'd expect to pay much, much more for the distance.
For our entire trip we budgeted $300 USD for spending for the two of us ($150 usd each), and we still had money left over by the time we got to the airport to fly back to Fukuoka. We aren't budget travellers and don't try to save money, so if you are someone who prefers to spend less money, it's definitely possible.
Then we took a tour to Halong Bay, a Unesco World Heritage Site, featuring over 1,600 islands. The scale was so vast and incredible, and the tour was really relaxing and a well-deserved break from our busy life in Japan. (Did I mention we had no WiFi, so we were totally disconnected during those two days as well!)
We booked with AClass Tours, and although we booked the Legend cruise, we got upgraded to the Stella Cruise, which was more expensive, nicer bedroom, for no extra cost. ($120 USD for each of us.) The $120 each covered the 3.5 hour shuttle bus round trip, accommodation on the boat (beautiful ocean-view suite), all the national park entry fees (maze cave, floating village), four meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast, lunch), free wine tasting on ship, and even my visa letter. (Canadians need to apply for a visa before arriving in Vietnam, Japanese don't. The company I booked through took care of my Visa letter for free with reservation of the cruise.)
I booked on
(This isn't sponsored by the way, I'm just writing this all down because when I was planning the trip I had a really hard time figuring out all this stuff myself. Hopefully this helps anyone who wants to plan their own trip!)

Exploring HANOI - What To See & Exact Cost ????????
Travel has a lot to do with the costs of living. How cheap is Hanoi Vietnam? Today we break down the cost of accommodation, food and drink, transportation and also activities to help you budget your trip to Vietnam better, specifically in Hanoi which is the capital city of Vietnam, where we stay for 3 days and it totally make our experience in Vietnam amazing.
Vietnam is a place where you could find anything from nice and cheap budget backpacker hostel, great Airbnb room, great hotels, great budget friendly restaurants with reasonable prices, especially in the popular city of the country like Hanoi. The country is generally said a bit cheaper than Thailand, greatly affordable for budget traveler or backpackers who dream of traveling South East Asia. it is still a perfect place to see the culture of Vietnam, perfect for food travel and those who enjoy Vietnamese food. Hanoi also got its specialty in Pho, which is the popular Vietnamese food. With the short stay, we totally love it there in Hanoi.

Cubic mentality: 4-story Paris flat fits comfort in 25 sq mt
Architect Jérôme Vinçon believes that with architecture, like clothing, made-to-measure buys a lot more than ready-to-wear. When his friends Michel Craca and Gaelle Potel bought a tiny apartment (next door to the restaurant in Paris’ Montparnasse where he’s head chef and she’s maitre d’) and asked for his help, he delivered a piece of personal architecture where every centimeter was scrutinized.
In what was once a doorman’s room and cellar, Vinçon took advantage of the 17 feet of height and crafted four floors of personal architecture in just 25 square meters. Instead of creating the smallest staircase possible, Vinçon turned the entire apartment into an open staircase.
On the top floor a mostly open bathroom dangles above the living room. Its semi-transparent shower (the “peep show”) is suspended directly above the kitchen. Down a tiny boat-style staircase, the bedroom is the final subterranean floor. Cut off from all light, it feels like a cozy captain’s cabin with lots of sliding storage.
To extend the natural daylight from the apartment’s sole window (in the living room), Vinçon left the bathroom open with its semi-opaque shower. By making the kitchen just a half-floor below the living room, it also benefits from the window. Given Craca’s profession as a chef, Vinçon worked to create the most professional kitchen possible in 32-square-feet of space.
Vinçon has spent years studying small spaces. His research has focused on boats, dorms, space station and a convent. He once lived in a tiny room (1.8 by 6 meters) in Le Corbusier’s modernist convent near Lyon (“Couvent Saint-Marie de la Tourette”) and was inspired by all of Le Corbusier’s “theory of the dimension of the body of man”.
“We often say that architecture is a matter of 10 centimeters. Ten centimeters less here (he says pointing out the bedroom stairs) and my shoulders don’t fit anymore. Ten centimeters are fundamental here. SO I’m not working within 10 centimeters here, but one centimeter. So here I had to work more with the human body. So it required a lot of thought to find the best solution each time.”
Atelier d'architecture Jerome Vinçon:
