Grimeton Radio Station - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site Grimeton Radio Station in south-western Sweden is an early example of transatlantic radio communications. The enormous antennae and massive generator had enough power to send longwave radio signals directly across the Atlantic to the central processing node in New York. Despite being built in the 1920s, it's actually still functional though is only used on a few special days each year. Let's check it out!

Grimeton Radio Station - My Alexanderson Day visit on July 3 2011
My visit to the unique Grimeton SAQ transatlantic radio station in Grimeton, Varberg, Sweden.
This World Heritage radio station was built in 1924, in the pre-electronics era. Instead, it generates its 17.2 kHz carrier wave by purely mechanical means, using a huge high-speed alternating current generator (an Alexanderson Alternator).
It is the only such device left in the world, and it is fully operable.
It is started a few times a year, and it is a wonderful experience to see it
come to life. I visit the station at least once a year for this.
This video was shot on July 3, 2011, and features startup, transmission and
shutdown of the machine by the local enthusiasts, many of them former employees of the station, who still care for the unique machinery.

2016-07-03 Radio Station SAQ in Grimeton Sweden spins up the massive Alexanderson alternator.
So the day started off bright, clear with the usual Swedish wind. Found out after the days transmission was over that if it wasn't for the foul wacky weather that came up very suddenly, the Swedish King was to have made an appearance at SAQ. Oh well, next time.
Radio transmissions from SAQ are heard on 17.2KHz.

Radiostation Grimeton (Schweden)
Die Radiostation in Grimeton bei Varberg an der schwedischen Südwestküste war einmal ein Meilenstein auf dem Weg zur weltumspannenden Kommunikation. Zusammen mit zwanzig weiteren Anlagen dieser Art bildete sie ab 1925 ein globales Funknetzwerk.
Heute ist Grimeton der einzige, noch erhaltene und funktionierende Längstwellensender, dessen gesamtes Ambiente aus den 1920er Jahren komplett vorhanden ist. Weshalb die Station 2004 in die Welterbe-Liste der UNESCO aufgenommen wurde. Dass damals vor 80 Jahren König Gustaf V. persönlich das Gebäude einweihte, unterstreicht die Bedeutung dieser neuen Kommunikationsmöglichkeit für Schweden. Den Anstoß zum Bau der Funkstation gab neben den Erfahrungen mit leicht zerstörbaren Land- und Seekabeln im Ersten Weltkrieg eine Emigrationswelle gigantischen Ausmaßes. Abertausende von Schweden suchten Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts ihr Glück im Land der angeblich unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten. Da es oft ein Abschied für immer werden sollte, bekam die Verbindung mit den Daheimgebliebenen per drahtloser Telegraphie für viele existentielle Bedeutung.
Die Entdeckung der elektromagnetischen Wellen und ihrer drahtlosen Ausbreitung im Raum läutete eine Sternstunde der Nachrichtentechnik ein, die einer Revolution gleich kam. Zahlreiche Funkpioniere haben sie vorbereitet, dem italienischen Physiker und Nobel-Preisträger Guglielmo Marconi gelang dann 1895 die erste drahtlose Funkverbindung über den Atlantik. Der schwedische Elektroingenieur Ernst F.W. Alexanderson konstruierte schließlich eine Maschine, die den Langwellen jenen Schwung verlieh, der sie zum lichtschnellen Lauf um den Erdball beflügelte. Die nach ihm benannte Maschine heißt Alexanderson-Sender und thront bis heute als technisches Denkmal mitten in der Radiostation Grimeton. Ernst Alexanderson entwickelte die nach ihm benannte Senderantenne für die Verbreitung der Längstwellen. Die am Sendermasten befindlichen Spulen führen Strom in den Erdboden. Turm, Drähte und Spulen bilden einen Resonanzkreis für die Sendefrequenz.

Message send from Grimeton Radio/SAQ on 28.06.2015 (part of it). The SAQ station uses no vacuum tubes but 200kW Alexanderson alternator working on 17.2kHz. It's the last VLF station in the world that uses such a device - it's preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage.
Trzy razy w roku uruchamiany jest generator Alexandersona w Grimeton w Szwecji i stacja SAQ nadaje komunikaty telegrafią na 17.2kHz (fale BARDZO długie). Oto nagranie komunikatu - niestety pierwsza emisja nie udała się ze względu na problem techniczny - zwarcie w układzie antenowym. Problem usunięto i o 14:00 SAQ znowu była w eterze.
W podwarszawskich Babicach była bardzo podobna stacja (AXO/AXL), niestety nie przetrwała II Wojny Światowej.
