Finding Good Crappie Fishing Spots
Jason made a point in the fall and winter to look for new crappie fishing spots with his electronics. He started in some productive arms of the lake and idled along break lines looking for brush piles with fish.
These creek channel edges are often where fishermen like to drop their brush piles. So Jason scanned with Lowrance HDS 3D Structure Scan for likely looking spots and brush piles until he found schools of crappie holding on them.
Once he saw a good school of fish on a brush pile, he stopped and fished it. He would cast a jig over the top, when they quit biting that, he would pitch to the piles from a closer distance, and finally he would get right on top of them and fish vertically on the pile.
He had one of the best fall/winter periods for crappie fishing in recent years by getting out and hunting for fish more with his electronics.

Did The Soviets Build A Better Space Shuttle? The Buran Story
On November 15, 1988, the world learned that the Soviet Union also had their own space shuttle. It had been secretly under development for well over a decade and it had cost the Soviets billions to build it. Several of the spacecraft were in various stages of construction. But the Soviet shuttle, named the Buran, would only ever launch once. Its development had largely been driven by the need to respond to the perceived military potential of the NASA Space Shuttle.
When the Buran was first launched, the world speculated that it would be used to build Soviet space stations or even assemble spacecraft for a manned mars mission. But as the Soviet Union began to collapse, funding for the Buran program was limited and eventually eliminated.
There’s no denying that the Buran looks very similar to the Space Shuttle. But in many ways, the Buran was quite different from the NASA Space Shuttle. The Buran orbiter didn’t have integrated main engines. Almost all of its lifting power was provided by a separate super-heavy rocket called Energia, which consisted of a core stage and 4 liquid-fueled boosters. Unlike the Space shuttle, which was a single system, the Buran orbiter, and its lifting rockets were actually two separate systems.
While the Shuttle, with its integrated engines, was more reusable, in practice, it required intensive maintenance between launches, which offset a lot of this advantage. But once in space, the Space Shuttle’s integrated engines no longer served a purpose. So, for most of the Shuttle’s mission, it was forced to haul around thousands of pounds of dead weight. Without integrated engines, the Buran could carry slightly more payload than the American Space Shuttle. But the Energia rocket could launch by itself, without the Buran attached. That meant it could carry external payloads into space, and could launch an astounding 100 tons. From the outset, the Buran was also capable of fully automated flight, meaning it could be launched, put into orbit and returned back to earth without any crew on board.
In the final days of the Soviet Union, when it was clear that the American shuttle had no meaningful military potential, the Soviet military no longer wanted anything to do with the Buran. The Soviet space community was left with a spacecraft that was expensive, complex, and largely without a real purpose. #Buran #SpaceRace #Spaceships #SovietSpaceProgram
Further Research:
We highly recommend the book ‘Energiya-Buran: The Soviet Space Shuttle’ by Bart Hendrickx and Bert Vis. The book was an extremely useful resource in researching this video. You will not find a more detailed or comprehensive look on the Buran program, covering everything from the program’s conception to its legacy:

BBC - The Fantastic Mr Feynman
REVIEW
Gerard O'Donovan reviews The Fantastic Mr Feynman
A documentary exploring the life and career of noted physicist Richard Feynmann.
4 out of 5 stars
Richard Feynman, whose diagrams provided the first intuitive way of drawing particle interactions
By Gerard O'Donovan10:30PM BST 12 May 2013CommentsComments
Recently I watched The Challenger, an engrossing BBC Two drama starring William Hurt as a scientist battling terminal illness and deliberate obfuscation to get at the truth behind the 1986 space shuttle disaster. Beautifully crafted, it revealed as much about the indefatigable spirit of the physicist Richard Feynman as it did of his discovery that shockingly basic engineering failings had caused the disaster. It was aired again ahead of The Fantastic Mr Feynman (BBC Two, Sunday), an absorbing documentary that burrowed deep into the life of “one of the most extraordinary scientists of the 20th century”.
This was biography in the heroic mould, an unalloyed celebration of a man whose maverick tendencies affected everything he did in life (he died in 1988), from his wartime work on the A-bomb, to the problem solving that won him the Nobel Prize for his work in quantum electrodynamics. But the film also revealed a restless spirit who was as uncomfortable with his Nobel prize (“I don’t believe in honours, honours bother me”) as he was with knowing that his wartime work had contributed to tens of thousands of deaths.
At root were emotional factors: an adored father who instilled a dyed-in-the-wool contempt for authority; and an adored first wife, Arlene, lost to tuberculosis at 26. Factors that tempered his remarkable mathematical gifts with a broad streak of humanity and a sense of life’s uncertainty.
Feynman’s impish charm and bubbling-over desire to share his inexhaustible scientific wonder crackled off the screen. “He discovered a new law of nature; only very few people did that,” said his son Carl with pride. More likely though it is Feynman’s still rarer skills as a communicator of science – living on in the internet age through countless YouTube tributes and his enduringly popular books – that will keep his place secure among the greats.

Guillermo Gómez - Peña Unplugged
Guillermo Gómez-Peña Unplugged:
A brand new spoken-word monologue by el Mad Mex
Tuesday, September 13, 2016
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Performing Arts & Humanities Building : Proscenium Theatre
Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Chicano performance artist, writer, activist, and educator
In his latest solo work, “El border brujo” draws from his 30-year-old “living archive” and combines new and classic performance material to present a unique perspective on the immediate future of the Americas. His self-styled “imaginary activism” invokes performance art as a form of radical democracy and citizenship.
Combining spoken word poetry, activist theory, radical storytelling, and language experimentation, Gómez-Peña offers critical and humorous commentary about the art world, academia, new technologies, the culture of war and violence in the US, organized crime in Mexico, gender and race politics, and the latest wave of complications surrounding gentrification in the “creative city.”
Besides his international work with the legendary troupe La Pocha Nostra, Gómez-Peña has presented his solo work at museums, universities, galleries and theatres throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Latin America, Australia and South Africa.
His unique format reveals to an audience the process of creating, “languaging,” and performing material and this process becomes the actual project. It is precisely in his new solo work where Gómez-Peña’s literature, theory, activism, pedagogy and live art come together in a wonderfully strange mix.
Gómez-Peña has spent many years developing his unique solo style, which has been described as “a combination of embodied poetry, performance activism, and theatricalizations of postcolonial theory.” In his ten books, as in his live performances, digital art, videos and photo-performances, he pushes the boundaries still further, exploring what’s left for artists to do in a repressive global culture of censorship, paranoid nationalism and what he terms “the mainstream bizarre.” Gómez-Peña examines where this leaves the critical practice of artists who aim to make tactical, performative interventions into our notions of culture, race, and sexuality. Most recently he has also been exploring the poetic and activist use of new technologies and social media.
Bio: Guillermo Gómez-Peña (US/Mexico) is a performance artist, writer, activist, radical pedagogue, and director of the performance troupe La Pocha Nostra. Born in Mexico City, he moved to the US in 1978. His performance work and 11 books have contributed to the debates on cultural and gender diversity, border culture, and US/Mexico relations. His artwork has been presented at over nine hundred venues across the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Russia, South Africa, and Australia. A MacArthur Fellow, Bessie and American Book Award winner, he is a regular contributor for newspapers and magazines in the US, Mexico, and Europe and a contributing editor to The Drama Review (NYU/MIT) and the Live Art Almanac (Live Art Development Agency-UK). Gómez-Peña is a Senior Fellow in the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, and a Patron for the London-based Live Art Development Agency. He was named a Samuel Hoi Fellow by USA Artists in 2012 and received a Eureka Fellowship from the Fleishhacker Foundation in 2013.
Sponsored by the Latino/Hispanic Faculty Association; the Dresher Center for the Humanities; the Global Studies Program; the Theatre Department; the Office of Institutional Advancement; the Language, Literacy, and Culture Program; the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; and the Modern Languages, Linguistics and Intercultural Communication Department.
Celebrating the East Building Twentieth-Century Art Series, Part 12: Pop Art
David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art. In all of art history, only one movement dared to predict public and commercial success in its very name. The distinction is appropriate, because pop art was all about commerce and consumption from the beginning. Emerging in mid-1950s Great Britain and soon spreading to the United States, pop was a creature of the postwar boom, when television, advertising, fast food, birth rates, home appliances, and suburban sprawl were quickly changing daily life in the developed world. Works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg reflect a new syntax of imagery drawn from popular culture and mass media, devoid of exalted art historical themes and the personal expression that were hallmarks of abstract expressionist painting. As part of the series Celebrating the East Building: 20th-Century Art, senior lecturer David Gariff considers the wide variety of objects, themes, and working methods that characterized pop art and the way it blurred distinctions between high art and popular culture. This lecture was presented on August 23, 2018, at the National Gallery of Art.
