Here in one of the warmest driest places on the Colorado Plateau, with little obvious food or water, people lived and others visited from far and wide. Trade items from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico have been discovered here. Eventually the builders of Wupatki and nearby pueblos moved on, but on trails, and through items left behind, you can let their stories touch you!
Wupatki National Monument was established by President Calvin Coolidge on December 9, 1924, to preserve Citadel and Wupatki pueblos. Monument boundaries have been adjusted several times since then, and now include additional pueblos and other archeological resources on a total of 35,422 acres.
Wupatki represents a cultural crossroads, home to numerous groups of people over thousands of years. Understanding of earlier people comes from multiple perspectives, including the traditional history of the people themselves and interpretations by archeologists of structures and artifacts that remain

Nestled between the Painted Desert and ponderosa highlands of northern Arizona, Wupatki is a landscape of legacies. Ancient pueblos dot red-rock outcroppings across miles of prairie. Where food and water seem impossible to find, people built pueblos, raised families, farmed, traded, and thrived. The Wupatki area is 2,000 feet lower than the volcanic region north of Flagstaff so the vegetation is quite different - the loop road from Sunset Crater descends quite quickly through fir and pine trees to the arid scrub-covered desert.
These images are of the 3-storey ‘Wupatki Pueblo’ (Hopi for 'big house') that was once home to 300 people and had over a hundred rooms. The settlement is built on the edge of a small plateau and has unobstructed views eastwards towards the Painted Desert and the Little Colorado River. The ruins are reached by a short, paved, self-guided trail starting at the visitor centre, which takes about half an hour to walk at a leisurely pace. Hiking off trail is not permitted. All the rooms at Wupatki are partially reconstructed.

Wupatki National Monument
The Wupatki National Monument contains the ruins of an ancient civilization just northeast of what is now Flagstaff, AZ. Having lived in the area for 400 years, they were displaced by the fiery eruption of Sunset Crater. A few generations later, at Wupatki and Walnut Canyon, families returned to grow crops for another 100 years in the shadow of Sunset Crater. By the year 1180 thousands of people were farming on the Wupatki landscape. By 1250, when the volcano had quieted, the pueblos stood empty. The people of Wupatki had moved on and established new homes. At least 125 different kinds of pottery have been found at Wupatki. This suggests that a rich culture lived and traded here during the 1100s.

Thirty minute drive from Flagstaff, AZ we reached Sunset Crater National Park. I have never been to a Volcanic region ever before. This place stumped be by its beauty. I can't write enough about the short hike we did in the region. The environment was different. I am so glad we visited this place. The next stop was at Wukoki and Wupatki National monument. They are town/cities created by pre - historic people. This was again a first time for me.I enjoyed my stay in Arizona. More videos coming up!!

Camera Crusades; In this video I explore Wupatki and Sunset Crater National Monuments. Two amazing Monuments that are relatively close together. Making my visit here twice as awesome. I started my adventure by shooting Wukoki at sunset before making camp nearby. It was a cold night so a campfire was a must. The next morning I found some great color in the sky for sunrise at both Wukoki and Wupatki Ruins. I was a magical morning. Later that day I hiked all three trails in Sunset Crater; Bonito Lava Flow, Lennox Crater trail and the Lava Flow Trail. I very fun and productive trip to these national monuments.
