Malta Trek: Zurrieq Cliffs, March 2013
Trek along part of the island's spectacular and rugged southwestern cliffs beyond Zurrieq, on a sunny afternoon characterised by strong southerly winds and rough seas. Starting in the Nigret area of Zurrieq and proceeding down the steep road to Wied (valley) Bassasa, past 'Wardija' coastal tower, built by Grand Master De Redin in 1659. From there we proceed westward along the cliffs, past Wied Ganu to the area known as 'Il-Munqar', overlooking the Blue Grotto and Wied Babu, enjoying expansive views of the blue Mediterranean Sea and the mysterious islet of Filfla. Across the valley, in Wied iz-Zurrieq, one can see Ta' Xuta coastal tower, built by Grand Master Lascaris in 1637. Back in the village of Zurrieq, we proceed to Xarolla Windmill (Grand Master de Vilhena, 1724) and St. Andrew's Chapel (1634) and visit the catacombs on this site dating back to the late Roman period (unfortunately much of this complex was damaged by development over the years).
