Chinese students love overseas holiday camps
Increasing numbers of Chinese students are spending their summers overseas. The trend has spawned a mini-industry catering to families who want their children to experience a western-lifestyle. However, the extravagant costs mean that these immersion programs remain an exclusive learning opportunity.
Are these trips beneficial to the students education, or are they just an expensive holiday? Wang Shi, Academic Principal of Beijing Kaiwen Academy, Assistant to Principal at Tsinghua University High School, Mr. Rick Dunham, co-director of the Global Business Journalism program at Tsinghua University, also leading a group of students of Tsinghua university on a summer journalism training program, weigh in on the issue.

Michael Meyer Discusses His Book The Road To Sleeping Dragon: Learning China From The Ground Up
The final book in Michael Meyer's China trilogy tells a story both deeply personal and universal as he captures what it feels like to learn a language, culture and history from the ground up.
About the Book
In 1995, at the age of twenty-three, Michael Meyer joined the Peace Corps and, after rejecting offers to go to seven other countries, was sent to a tiny town in Sichuan. Knowing nothing about China, or even how to use chopsticks, Meyer wrote Chinese words up and down his arms so he could hold conversations, and, per a Communist dean's orders, jumped into teaching his students about the Enlightenment, the stock market, and Beatles lyrics. Soon he realized his Chinese counterparts were just as bewildered by China's changes as he was.
Thus began an impassioned immersion into Chinese life. With humor and insight, Meyer puts readers in his novice shoes, winding across the length and breadth of his adopted country --from a terrifying bus attack on arrival, to remote Xinjiang and Tibet, into Beijing's backstreets and his future wife's Manchurian family, and headlong into efforts to protect China's vanishing heritage at places like Sleeping Dragon, the world's largest panda preserve.
In the last book of his China trilogy, Meyer tells a story both deeply personal and universal, as he gains greater – if never complete – assurance, capturing what it feels like to learn a language, culture and history from the ground up. Both funny and relatable, The Road to Sleeping Dragon is essential reading for anyone interested in China's history, and how daily life plays out there today.
About the Author
Michael Meyer first went to China in 1995 with the Peace Corps. The winner of a Lowell Thomas Award for travel writing, Meyer has also won a Whiting Writers' Award for nonfiction and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His stories have appeared in the New York Times, Time, Smithsonian, Sports Illustrated, Slate, the Financial Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the Chicago Tribune. He is the author of In Manchuria and The Last Days of Old Beijing and he divides his time between Pittsburgh and Singapore.

Li, a Chinese investor and political scientist, begs to differ. Angry landlord exposes media star's double life
A social media influencer in China has been exposed for living a double life, after her landlord revealed her filthy living conditions, which contrasted with the glamorous image she presented online.
Footage went viral showing the apartment of Lisa Li - a blogger with 1.1 million followers - littered with rubbish, mouldy food, and dog excrement.
Since the footage was published, Ms Li has apologised.
Why was Ms Li famous?
Lisa Li is known in China as a wang hong, or online celebrity, on the popular Sina Weibo microblog.
Her account, like that of many young Chinese influencers, is a glossy catalogue of travel adventures, parties and fine-dining experiences.
But since her landlord gave media a tour of her apartment in the northern city of Xi'an, she has become famous for different reasons.
What did her landlord do?
After Lisa Li seemingly ignored a number of phone calls, millions of users watched her landlord, named by media as Ms Chen, give a guided tour of her filthy apartment.
Ms Chen told Pear Video that even professional cleaners had refused to clean the place, adding that her tenant owed thousands of yuan in unpaid utility bills.
Ms Chen said that she had no choice but to contact the police about the damage to her property and the unpaid utilities.
Lisa Li: Angry landlord exposes online star's 'double life'.
Lisa Li has been shamed online by her landlord.
Weibo users were stunned by the state Ms Li's apartment was left in.
Footage went viral showing Ms Li's floors covered in dog excrement.
Ms Li (Left) met with her landlord (Right) to apologise and resolve the issue.
Ms Li returned to clean her apartment.
Ms Li told The Paper she hadn't seen messages from her landlord.

[Watch to learn English the way you've learnt your mother-tongue as this video is especially made.]
But she particularly got social media attention for showing her tenant's Weibo page to the outlet, saying: This is an online influencer with one million followers.
She told Pear Video in a passionate interview the beautiful woman being presented online contrasted with the disgusting woman who left her apartment in a mess.
How did Ms Li react?
After millions of people saw the footage inside Ms Li's apartment, she suddenly resurfaced.
And rather than issuing a statement on social media, Ms Li met with her landlord to apologise in person.
Complete responsibility lies with me on this incident, she told Ms Chen. They were filmed shaking hands.
She explained her absence to popular news website The Paper as being the result of a tight schedule, saying that she went into hospital last week, and then went on a business trip.
She said that she had recently received a large number of messages on mobile WeChat, and had seemingly missed her landlord's.
I will clean now… I will even clean overnight, she told The Paper.
How have Ms Li's fans reacted?
Footage of Ms Li sweeping dog poo into a dustpan has shocked her fans, and led to a large amount of mockery online.
More than 60,000 users have commented on her page, many saying they were unfollowing her and calling her fake.
Many have also questioned her sincerity in her interviews with mainstream media. Users noted she has changed her social media handle and removed a number of earlier posts.
Is this the first time this type of thing has happened?
China is on a huge drive to push for celebrities to be socially responsible.
It heavily frowns on influencers not setting a good example to young followers, and has a track record of making examples of such people, arguing that stars need to be good role models and preserve a healthy online culture.
In July, a Chinese vlogger became the subject of widespread mockery, after a technical glitch during a live-stream revealed her to be a middle-aged woman, and not the young woman she had presented herself to be.
Some badly behaved influencers have even received short jail terms. In October 2018, Yang Kaili, a live-streaming celebrity with tens of millions of followers, was detained for five days for insulting the country's national anthem.
The live-streaming platform she used, Huya, took down her video and banned her channel, saying: Live-streaming platforms are not above the law - the law and moral standards similarly apply there.

Qinghai tibet Railway
The Qinghai–Tibet railway, Qinghai–Xizang railway or Qingzang railway (Standard Tibetan: mtsho bod lcags lam མཚོ་བོད་ལྕགས་ལམ།; simplified Chinese: 青藏铁路; traditional Chinese: 青藏鐵路; pinyin: Qīngzàng Tiělù), is a high-elevation railway that connects Xining, Qinghai Province, to Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, in the People's Republic of China.
The length of the railway is 1,956 km (1,215 mi). Construction of the 815 km (506 mi) section between Xining and Golmud was completed by 1984. The 1,142 km (710 mi) section between Golmud and Lhasa was inaugurated on July 1, 2006, by Chinese President Hu Jintao: the first two passenger trains were Qing 1 (Q1) from Golmud to Lhasa, and Zang 2 (J2) from Lhasa.[1] This railway is the first to connect the Tibet Autonomous Region to any other province, which, due to its elevation and terrain, is the last province-level entity in mainland China to have a railway. Testing of the line and equipment started on 1 May 2006.[2] Passenger trains run from Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Xining and Lanzhou.[3]
The line includes the Tanggula Pass, which, at 5,072 m (16,640 feet) above sea level, is the world's highest railway. Tanggula railway station at 5,068 m (16,627 feet) 33°00′18.50″N 91°38′57.70″E is the world's highest railway station. 1,338 m (4,390 ft) Fenghuoshan tunnel is the highest rail tunnel in the world at 4,905 m (16,093 ft) above sea level. The 4,010 m (13,160 ft) New Guanjiao Tunnel is the longest tunnel and culminating point (3,700 m)[4] between Xining and Golmud and 3,345 m (10,974 ft) Yangbajing tunnel is the longest tunnel between Golmud and Lhasa. More than 960 km (600 mi), over 80% of the Golmud-Lhasa section, is at an elevation of more than 4,000 m (13,123 ft). There are 675 bridges, totalling 159.88 km (99.34 mi); about 550 km (340 mi) is laid on permafrost.
