Xiahai temple
Xiahai City God Temple (台北霞海城隍廟) in Taiwan
This Xiahai City God Temple (台北霞海城隍廟) is a very famous temple near Dihua Street (迪化街) in Taipei, Taiwan. Xiahai City God protects the city (and people) from calamities and the like. There are many deity figures for praying to inside the temple, including a famous one for people trying to find a mate (figure called Old Man Under the Moon). If you pay attention to the details, you will notice that some figures were originally painted a different color but over time the incense soot collected on them turning them black in color. Because of this phenomena over time, many figures became black, and now, even in the yearly parades, the masks of the performers are purposely painted in black to resemble the statues! I am unsure if newer made statues were purposely painted in black, but those statues near the back definitely turned black from all the soot collected from the burning of the incense (joss) sticks. This turning black from soot probably influenced future statue makers to paint them black.
History:
During the Daoguang (道光) period of the Qing (清) dynasty China in 1821, hundreds of people moved to Taiwan from 五鄉 village, Xiacheng city (霞城 or also called 下店鄉 back then), Tong'an county (同安縣), Quanzhou Prefecture (泉州府), Fujian province. They carried with them a golden XiaHai (霞海) City God figure with them. The name XiaHai (霞海) comes from the combination of Xia (霞) from Xiacheng city (霞城) and hai (海) from the 臨海門 gate, which is near the sea (close to 下店鄉 in ancient times and now near 集美区后溪镇城内村). The actual 臨海門 gate was supposedly dug up in 1993 and put on display in a nearby temple (集美後溪霞城城隍廟). Tong'an (同安縣) was actually a county back then (bigger in size), so it included the Xiacheng (霞城) and 臨海門 gate. In any case, to continue with the story, the people settled in Bajia (八甲) Village in Taiwan, which is near Lao Song (老松) Elementary School on Guangzhou (廣州) Street in modern Taipei. Chen Jinrong (陳金絨) placed the Xiaha City God in his shop to serve as a temple. In 1853, Bajia (八甲) Village was destroyed during a gang war between the arrived Tong'an county people and people from three local counties of Jinjiang (晉江), Hui'an (惠安), and Nan'an (南安). The Tong'an people then took the statue and escaped to Dadaocheng. From 1858-1859, Chen Jinrong (陳金絨) and Chen Jiancheng (陳建成) received donated gold from followers and constructed a new temple in Dadaocheng in pure Minnan (閩南) architectural style. In 2005, Taipei city government tore it down and constructed a new temple and temple courtyard with the size of 50.3 ping (close to 166 square meters). The video shows the temple today during some minor renovation.

There’s a feeling, a peace of mind, that only my fellow vegans can understand.
When ordering food without any worries that it might not be vegan or have been cross-contaminated.
When you can pick anything from the whole menu, when only actual real food is being cooked on the place.
In celebration of this feeling we came up with this list, our favorite vegan eats in town!

柯文哲是否參加臺北上海雙城惹議 Taipei Shanghai City Forum in Shanghai in early July—宏觀英語新聞
►訂閱節目 Subscribe:
This year's Taipei-Shanghai City Forum is scheduled to take place in Shanghai at the beginning of July. Taipei City councilors have called on Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je to reconsider his attendance, as July 1 is the Communist Party of China's founding day and they fear the politics involved will be greater than that of a city forum. In response, the mayor said there will be no goodwill without exchanges.

Taipei Xiahai Chenghuang Temple (大稻埕霞海城隍)
The Taipei Xiahai Chenghuang Temple (大稻埕霞海城隍) is home to statues of the City God Chenghuang, his wife, a famous Chinese matchmaking deity, and 600 other gods. Indeed, it has the highest statue density of any temple in Taiwan.
Built in 1859 and on a fengshui-friendly hens cave location that ensures prosperity for the surrounding areas and people who worship at it, the temple is very small in size and has a very lively atmosphere.
The temple is particularly popular with young singles who come to pray to a statue of the Old Man Under The Moon (月下老人), a famous matchmaking deity from a Tang Dynasty legend, to arrange for them to find the right marriage partner. Step-by-step instructions on how to follow the appropriate rituals are provided by the priests and signs in the temple.
Located on Dihua Street in the old part of the city, the Xiahai Chenghuang Temple is a fun place to visit and gives you a glimpse of Taiwans traditional culture.

Discovering China - Taipei 101 Fireworks, Story of Su Wu and Qing Artifacts
Hi I'm Alina Wang and welcome to Discovering China, a very happy new year to everyone. Coming up on our first show of 2013...
Fireworks bring in the New Year in Taipei.
The story of Su Wu, one of ancient China's loyalist diplomats.
And Taipei's National Palace Museum holds a competition to design Qing Dynasty style artifacts.
1
With the start of 2013, fireworks lit up the skies across the world. Fireworks are made possible by gunpowder an ancient Chinese invention. In Taipei they carry on the tradition every year with fireworks shooting from Taipei 101, the world's second tallest building.
2
Next we tell the story of Su Wu, a Chinese diplomat from the Han Dynasty, who spent 19 years in exile at the hands of the northern Xiongnu tribes. Despite attempts by the Xiongnu to tempt him to join them, Su stayed loyal to the Han and returned to serve the emperor again.
3
Some of China's most precious artifacts are held in Taipei's National Palace Museum. The museum recently held a competition to design items in the style of the Qianlong reign period of the Qing Dynasty.
Outro
Thanks for watching Discovering China, I'm Alina Wang and we will be bringing you more characters from Chinese history plus a look at tea making in the Song Dynasty in the weeks to come. See you soon.
