Welcome to Yamamoto Nohgakudo
Noh is a Japanese traditional dramatic art, that has been performed for over 700 years, and it is acknowledged as the oldest existing mask drama in the world. Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the supreme leader of feudal Japan, who built Osaka castle, was also a devout Noh fan and even tried to perform himself. Here in Osaka, Noh has been a part of people’s life and an important cultural phenomenon. In this video, you can learn about the history and aesthetics of Noh together with Petko - an exchange student from Bulgaria.

The programme includes Shishi (Lion Dance) from the popular classical Noh play Shakkyo (Stone Bridge), in which a lion, messenger of Manjusri Bodhisattva, appears at a stone bridge and dances with gorgeous, fragrant peony flowers.
In addition, Yukihiro Isso’s highly-acclaimed Shishi 16, a Lion Dance in modern style, and his brand-new composition with a story by Atsushi Iriki presented by all Noh performers.
