Best Place to Vacation/Stay Near Yellowstone National Park - UXU Ranch near Cody Wyoming
From scenic horseback riding, fishing (the video was taken in May the water will settle down and be crystal clear after the spring run-off is done), hiking, wildlife, photography, great food, peace and quiet, and genuine cowboys and cowgirls that can tell you a yarn or two.
The UXU Ranch is nestled between the Washakie Wilderness to the South and the North Absaroka Wilderness to the North (wilderness.net for more information about wilderness) along the North fork of the Shoshone River and in the Shoshone National Forest. Just West of the UXU Ranch is Mummy Cave (while heading towards Yellowstone from UXU when you come to the first bridge after UXU Ranch park at the parking area on the right just before the bridge. The cave is easily found by following the trail to the small wooden fence.
My time there was greatly enhanced by taking a 2 hour horse back ride on Friday and a 1 hour horseback ride on Saturday. The views were amazing and they have options for trails of all skill levels. They also have options up to an all day horseback ride (or even multiple days). Currently (as of May 2018) the price for the 1 hour ride was $45 and the 2 hour ride was $65 which honestly was a bargain as I really enjoyed my time with Pooch (the cowboy in front of me) and his daughter Sherry. I definitely felt like Billy Crystal in City Slickers with how smooth the two of them looked while riding a horse but the two of them made me feel nothing but confidence despite not having been on a horse since the early 1990's.
If you go, which I recommend you do, tell them Captain America sent you! You can make reservations, or call, via their website uxuranch.com and trust me when I say you won't forget a vacation at that ranch. Plus, Theodore Roosevelt is claimed to have stated that from Cody to the East Entrance of Yellowstone is the 50 most beautiful miles in America and this Ranch is very much a part of that stretch for good reason!

Backpacking The Greater Yellowstone: Thorofare Creek/Yellowstone River Headwaters Full Video
This is a 6 day backpacking trip we did in Wyoming this past September. The trip was in both the Washakie and Teton Wilderness, and the Absaroka Mountains, which make up part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. This area sits just outside the south east corner of Yellowstone National Park, and is one of the more remote areas in the lower 48 states. We did a loop from the South Fork of the Shoshone River, going up Ishawooa Creek to the pass, down Pass Creek, up Thorofare Creek, into both the north and south fork drainages of the Yellowstone River, over to Marston Pass, down some of the Buffalo Plateau, and then down Bliss Creek to the Shoshone River.
Some of the route was off trail. Some of the trails here don't show up in maps, and often times we used what I call outfitter trails, which are trails maintained by horse packers and hunting guides. There is a good variety of wildlife in this area, including grizzly bears, moose, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, black bears, and wolves. We saw a bunch of grizzly sign, but only one grizzly bear and one black bear. In past experiences I've seen numerous grizzly bears in this area and on exact parts of this route. We passed a wildfire which was kind of exciting. We also went during rifle hunting season for elk, which wasn't a great idea. We had been given wrong information about when rifle season started, otherwise we probably wouldn't have done this trip.

Drawn to Yellowstone
In association with Wyoming PBS, Raechel Donahue of Wild West Productions has produced, written and directed a documentary loosely based on the Peter Hassrick book Drawn to Yellowstone, the story of how the art of Thomas Moran and the photography of William H. Jackson were used to persuade Congress to make Yellowstone into the world's first national park. Beginning with the native Americans who frequented the area, through the early expeditions in the 1800s and eventually traveling up to the present day, scholars and artists tell the story of this amazing 2.5 million acre wilderness and the incredible pull it has always held for artists of every kind.

Wyoming Range
Following the crest of the Wyoming Range is the 75 mile Wyoming Range National Recreation Trail. More of a route then a trail one end is located in Hoback Canyon near Jackson Hole, the other end in Snider Basin near Big Piney. The trail is primitive and rugged and the area more wild than many designated wilderness areas.
In 1999 the Wyoming Range Legacy Act protected 1.2 million acres of the Wyoming and Salt River Ranges from energy and mineral development. Unfortunately, 75,000 acres of existing undeveloped energy leases remain in the heart of one of the largest non-wilderness roadless areas in the lower 48 states.
On August 20-22, 2010 Forrest McCarthy mountain biked the length of Wyoming Range Trail. Starting at the Bryan Flats in Hoback Canyon Forrest followed the Wyoming Range National Recreation Trail all the way to Snider Basin. On the southern end of the range he chose a higher route than the official trail and followed the crest of the range over Mount Coffin and Wyoming Peak.

Grizzly Bear Encounter in Wyoming
In Wyoming, with Boulder Basin Outfitters (Cody, Wyoming) were just about to leave the horses on foot when I had a grizzly bear approach at 10 yards. We we back to the horses and he circled us at 15 yards. That same day when we were leaving, I got on my horse and when I did, a momma bear and 3 cubs got up from laying down 10 yards away AGAIN! Luckily, the momma bear ran away, but here is the video of the first bear. Notice how he almost came down the path, that would of been interesting!!
