Korea, China & Japan: The History for Unlocking the Future
[Part 1] The Great Legacy: Cultural Exchanges-
Based on efforts to uncover the truth as well as rigorous self-reflection, this documentary, titled Korea, China & Japan: The History for Unlocking the Future, aims to paint the future of Korea, China, and Japan in which the three nations understand one another and move toward growth hand in hand.
An international competition kicks off where college students from Korea, China, and Japan participate in teams. Their topic of choice is none other than chopsticks. Through this object, which despite its similar shape embodies the cultural differences between the three nations, the participants manage to find the true meaning of the cultural exchanges that had begun 3,000 years ago.
The cultural exchanges in East Asia took on a different form in 19thcentury,when the three countries opened their ports one by one after the Opium War and begun their journeys toward modernization. The films made one hundred years ago portray the tumultuous history of Korea, China, and Japan after the era of modernization, where Japan emerged as an advocate of imperialism and Korea and China resisted against it.
However, Japan began using its film industry as a means of propaganda to justify its war. Having built Manchukuo, Japan began controlling the movies that were made in the three nations through the Manchukuo Film Association, and introduced the Joseon Motion Picture Law to censor films.
The memories from the fierce modern era are being recorded differently according to the practical interests of Korea, China, and Japan. And the territorial disputes and disagreements over historical distortions that have resulted from such practice are hindering the cultural exchanges within East Asia. A case in point is the musical Finding Kim Jong-Wook, the first musical to be performed in Korea, China, and Japan; the Chinese government replaced the Japanese character in the musical with a Thai character. Another example is the ceaseless anti-Korean demonstrations that are being held in Japan against K-POP stars who participated in campaigns that promoted the Dokdo Islets as Korea's territory. The cultural exchanges have reached their limit, faced with the historical conflicts and discords between the three nations. What can be done to solve this predicament?
