Two and a half years ago, during my first visit in India, I spent 2 days walking all around the slums of Mumbai. Even though I got to learn quite a bit about the life in the slums, I didn’t have the chance to live inside the slums and because of that I left with more questions than answers.
So now that I came back to India for the second time, I decided to go back to Mumbai and spend five days living in Dharavi, which is one of the largest slums in the world.
This experience opened my eyes in ways I couldn’t have imagined, because I got to spend so much time with the local people, who completely transformed my outlook on what their lives were like.
You see, as most outsiders, I had a very distorted view of the people of the slums. We grow up hearing stories about them dying on the streets, no one being able to read and write, kids having to sleep surrounded by flesh-eating rats and so on.
There are, of course, tons of problems that need to be addressed, especially when it comes to sanitation. For example, sources say that in Dharavi there is an average of 1 toilet for a thousand people. Also, livestock generally lives in the same quarters with people and that, combined with the fact that the local water sources lack cleaning facilities, sometimes causes the spread of contagious diseases.
However, people there are just like everywhere else. They have their own dreams, goals, careers, thoughts and emotions. They are in no way different from the rest of us.
It doesn’t matter where we come from. We are all equal. Some of us are born with golden spoons in our mouths, others are not. But that doesn’t define us. What defines us is our pursuit of happiness, our compassion for others and our ability to adapt to whatever circumstances we’re in and make the best of them.

Life When The Monsoon Comes To Mumbai
The months of monsoon bring joy to millions of people not only in Mumbai but all over India. The torrential rains arrive after a torrid, long and tiring summer. The monsoon begins during the first week of June in the southwest coast. It then travels up through the Indian state of Kerala, up towards the North and usually reaches the city of Mumbai around the second week of June.
The rains usually last until September and during this period the humidity increases, it gets very windy and the raindrops can pour down at any time of the day and for many hours, sometimes for entire days. It is a custom in India for people to predict the monsoon’s arrival. This often becomes a national headline in the papers and on the news channels as the whole country keeps checking weather updates with people getting increasingly curious to know the details as they long for it to begin after the exhausting summer.
But all the curiosity and need to know about when the monsoon will come is not just for entertainment or relief from the heat. For agriculture the rain is vital as it has a direct impact on the crops and those who depend on them. Rice, for example, which is an important staple food throughout India, requires a huge amount of water in order to grow and thrive, especially in places where water doesn’t reach as easily as it does in the villages on the banks of rivers. Monsoon is the hope for millions of farmers to recover their prosperity and to wish for another year of new crops as the rain brings the means to make farming possible.
Monsoon is also a romantic season for young couples, in fact it is impossible to miss those young couples trying to find shelter from the rain hiding under an umbrella and embarking in long peaceful walks. There is a sense of freshness all around with plants, flowers and trees in full bloom. This is especially true in the outskirts of Mumbai where new colours appear in front of the eyes of the people who enjoy being outdoors. It truly is heaven for nature lovers.
Monsoon in Mumbai can be hectic but at the same time it can be quite fun. The rains bring happiness to all, children and adults, and they also bring people together as there are so many different festive occasions where families get together and celebrate.
I really love the monsoon…when the rains come it is kind of magical. The monsoon not only brings hope and happiness on the face of the farmers but also on the face of each Mumbaikar as finally it is time to enjoy the lower temperature and the cool breeze.

In the past he worked in the plastic recycling industry in Dharavi and used to see the tours coming through the factory he worked in. That inspired him to become a tour guide. In one day, we had 7 delicious street foods all made in the PUNJAB style. I didn’t realize until after we finished eating, but we didn’t eat any meat or chicken at all! It was true vegetarian HEAVEN!
We started out the day with an AMAZING Indian breakfast in two different Indian street food restaurants. The first was the famous Amritsar Kulcha. I’m pretty sure you can get this dish in Delhi, but here in Amritsar is the origin of this stuffed baked bread from HEAVEN. It’s stuffed with a spiced potato mix and onions. It’s sprinkled with a masala spice and then put DEEP into the Tandoori oven and baked. It’s served to you on a plate with Chole chickpea curry and onion chutney.
The next AMAZING Breakfast we had on our street food tour was the Poori and Chole with Potato sabzi. A little similar with the chole, but the potato sabzi was nice and sweet and tangy and very UNIQUE!
Afterwards, we took our TUK TUK around town for some more amazing street foods. We enjoyed a street corner tofu curry served with a pancake and then we went to have a sweet and sour buttermilk lassi.
After this, we went to the LEGENDARY Kesar De Dhaba all vegetarian curry restaurant that uses PURE desi ghee. It was extremely flavourful and just a little spicy. We ordered the VEG thali and it was incredible! The paratha bread was so fluffy and covered in pure desi ghee, absolute HEAVEN! We also ate some dessert, a fruit kulfi ice cream!
After this we went for a couple more street foods in Amritsar. We were exploring the back lanes and found an amazing mango fruit stall! It was dried and covered in a slightly spicy and sour and tangy sauce. There were a lot of flavours in this Indian recipe. It was spicy, sour, tangy, sweet, peppery, acidic, pungent, and made your mouth pucker when you ate it! Very UNIQUE!
After this, we went for our final street food, an ICONIC street food in India, the samosa. It was stuffed with potato, cumin seeds, and spices.

So even though the country is young, it has long ancient roots as it lies on the historic SILK ROUTE that connected China to Mediterranean / Europe.

Mumbai Travel guide
Mumbai, earlier known as Bombay, is the capital of Maharashtra and the largest city of India. Mumbai initially was the accumulation of seven islands on the Konkan coastline, which with the passage of time joined to form island city of Bombay.
Mumbai undeniably is the business capital of India and one of the major port cities in the country. Mumbai has a diverse nature and multi-cultural lifestyle. On one hand, this city is the hometown of Bollywood, and on the other, this city has India's largest slum population. With the huge inflow of migrants, this city welcomes all with open arms. The city developed its identity from these communities that are settled in here. The culture here is a fine amalgamation of festivities, religions, music, food, music and theaters. Mumbai is said to have most active nightlife in comparison to other cities.
There is a lot to see in Mumbai, but the typical tourist sights are concentrated in South Mumbai.
By Indian standards, Mumbai is a young city and much of the land comprising the city did not exist until it was claimed from the sea over three centuries ago. It is therefore, a pleasant surprise to find rock cut caves such as the Elephanta, Kanheri, and Mahakali within city limits.
The British built a magnificent city within the walls of Fort St. George, which lies at the southern extremity of the city. Some fine examples of the Gothic revival, Neo-classical style and Indo-Saracenic style are seen within this area. To get the best [South Mumbai] experience, stroll around the wide streets of the area right from Churchgate to Colaba. These areas are all beautifully planned and have wide and clean pavements unlike the rest of the city. Famous monuments to be seen in this area are the Gateway of India, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus) building, the Municipal Corporation and Police Headquarters and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sanghralaya (formerly, the Prince Of Wales museum). The famous Taj Mahal hotel is located just opposite the Gateway of India. The Mumbai University buildings and the High Court are also excellent examples of colonial architecture in the city.
There are a lot of other modern structures to look at in this area. The area known as Marine Drive (right from Chowpatty beach to NCPA) is home to a large number of buildings built in the Art Deco style. Mumbai is second only to Miami in the number of Art Deco buildings. some famous buildings in this style are the Eros and Regal cinemas.
Mumbai has a few beaches, including one in the downtown area. But they aren't that great and the water off Mumbai's coast is extraordinarily dirty. The relatively better ones are in the Northwest Mumbai area. However, they are a great place to see how the locals spend their Sunday evenings, with various food and game stalls.
There are other beaches to be found such as the Girgaon Chowpaty in South Mumbai, Juhu beach in the western suburbs and Aksa Beach in Malad. The currents don't seem strong, but particularly in the rains, lots of people die from drowning, so avoid getting in the water (especially at Aksa Beach). A word of advice to women: Bombay beaches are not the kind you can wear swimsuits to, particularly two-pieces.

November 1, 1996: In Bombay, India, 85% of the proceeds from one concert were put aside for the 'Shiv Udyog Sena' to help create jobs for 270,000 young people in the state of Maharashtra.
Viraf Sarkari said, It was a charity show. Not even a penny was charged. Michael arrived in Mumbai on October 30th at Mumbai's Sahar airport, was greeted by Sonali Bendre clad in a nine-yard sari and a Maharashtrian nathni standing with an aarti thali to welcome MJ, along with Raj Thackeray, Sharmila Thackeray and innumerable politicians who were there to receive Jackson.
Upon arriving in Bombay, Michael asks his driver to stop the motorcade transporting him from the airport to his hotel to allow him to spend 20 minutes talking with children playing in the crowded slums he must pass en route. He then spent a few minutes with them before he proceeded to the Shiv Sena chief, Bal Thackeray's residence.
On January 25, 1997: Michael waved his personal fee for his Bombay appearance and donated $ 1.1 million to a local charity helping to educate children living in slums.
