YUMA TERRITORIAL PRISON STATE HISTORICAL PARK-YUMA, AZ-EP40
We visited the Yuma Territorial Prison State Historical Park which is privately owned and operated by the Historical Society, and is not government funded. Our visit was on 12-02-2018, admission for adults is $8/each, and $6 for seniors.
On July 1, 1876, the first seven inmates entered the Territorial Prison at Yuma and were locked into the new cells, that they had built for themselves. Can you imagine what that must have emotionally felt like?
A total of 3,069 prisoners, including 29 women, lived within the walls during the prison's 33 years of operation. It was closed in 1909.
The experience of being in a place that must have been so painful, hot, isolated and depressing to endure in real life was very powerful,......adding humor to the adventure helped process it all,....

ABOUT:
Yuma Territorial Prison in western Arizona was operational 1876-1909 as a high security prison. Over 3,000 inmates were sentenced here, ages 14-88, and included 29 women; the most famous of which was Pearl Hart. The prison was built in a rock cliff surrounded by a harsh desert environment to thwart escape attempts. Incorrigible inmates were placed in “dark cell” which was NOT solitary – several inmates could be placed in this room at any time: the room was completely dark with no bed or toilet and each inmate was chained to the floor.
