Welcome To Yurok Country
Located in the heart of The Redwoods in Northern California, Yurok Country is the ideal place for your next adventure. Klamath California is short driving distance of the more than 200 miles of trails that wisps along the beaches and through the centuries old forests—forests where some trees approach over 350 feet in height and 2,000 years of age. Take a ride on sky tram gondola at Trees of Mystery. Redwood National and State Parks are also home to a host of iconic animals such as Roosevelt elk, black bears, bald eagles and California sea lions. The forests are also reputed to be a favorite stomping ground of O-mah, or Bigfoot as you may have heard him called. If you’re looking for great fishing, ocean charters are available from nearby Crescent City; and August through October, you can cast a line for Chinook (King) salmon in the renowned Klamath River.

Tending the Wild: Keeping the River
Salmon once swam in every major river in California and they provided and continue to provide an invaluable resource for Native peoples. In some areas like the Klamath River Basin, salmon are at the center of the world and integral to the environmental and cultural survival of the Yurok, Karuk, and Hupa peoples. But modernization forever altered watersheds across the state by concretizing rivers, siphoning water for agricultural production, and building dams to facilitate hydroelectric power. The effects on fish populations have been devastating and many Native groups have protested against these threats to their way of life. In this video, we explore how the Yurok, Karuk, and Hupa peoples have maintained their close relationship with salmon, how they have fought civil rights battles to secure tribal fishing rights, and how they have mobilized against the environmental degradation of the Klamath and Trinity Rivers resulting from dams, large scale agriculture, and the marijuana industry.

2015 Yurok Salmon Festival HSU Marching Band Performing
HSU Marching Band performing at the 2015 Yurok Salmon Festival in Klamath California
We took a trip down to Klamath to enjoy the salmon festival. This is the first time we have been able to go for several years and it has really grown. Great events, music and lots of great food. The main meal is a salmon dinner for $10 a plate. If salmon is not your taste there are many other choices from fry bread, mexican, chinese, pizza and lots of berry pies and other desserts...yum!
The HSU Marching Band, the Marching Lumberjacks, put on a great show. They are very animated and really get into it. Always fun to watch. The conductor with is ax is great. He must have some strong arms. :)
