Zermatt, Switzerland in the heart of the Alps
Please subscribe:
We're heading for Zermatt, Switzerland one of the most beautiful towns in the Alps, surrounded by mountain peaks up to 15,000 feet high. Most famous for the dramatic Matterhorn, there are many other majestic sites to enjoy in this remote mountain area. So remote that you can’t drive or fly there, the Alpine resort village of Zermatt is surrounded by some of Europe’s highest mountains that shelter it from the outside world. Like mythical Shangri-La in the Himalayas, this is a magical wonderland. The quaint little village of Zermatt is situated in the midst of woods and pastures, in a mountain-girded valley, nearly 5,500 feet above the level of the sea.
The town of Zermatt, while dense, is geographically small. There are three main streets which run along the banks of the river Matter Vispa, and numerous cross-streets, especially around the station and the church which forms the centrer of Zermatt. In general anything is at most a thirty-minute walk away. Streets are narrow and lined with shops, restaurants, hotels and inns near the rail station. Homes and houses are throughout, some perched on the lower edge of the mountains, and a mixture of very old wood-hewn beamed walls 100s of years old with newer buildings and homes (probably only a century old!) Most buildings and homes are chalet style, some very historic, others more modern, but all blended in with the Old World charm and Alpine architecture.
Swiss watch shops, clothing boutiques, and souvenir shops with everything from Swiss brass bell key chains to lacy handkerchiefs for sale, Swarovski Crystal figurines and jewelry, cuckoo clocks, Goebel Hummels, Reuge Music boxes, fine porcelain dolls. Bakeries abound as do gourmet food stores. We discovered that the best buy on chocolate bars were in the grocery stores.
Of course there are many shops that sell clothing and accessories for hiking and skiing. Most of these stores also rent skiing equipment and the people who work at the stores can help anyone choose the best equipment to rent for a successful day on the slopes. In the old village, beside the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, about 30 ancient buildings show the traditional building style of the original Walser residents. The barns and grain stores, up to 500 years old, are a piece of living history and reveal how the mountain farmers of Zermatt once lived. Their sun-beaten wooden walls are made of larch wood and stand on stilts with round stone slabs on top to prevent rodents and insects from entering. The roofs of these typically Valais-style buildings are covered with shingles made of flat stone slabs.
WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS MOUNTAIN (Zermatt Ski Resort)
The location of Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn and in the middle of an enormous hiking and ski region makes it one of the world's most attractive vacation villages. The ski region encompasses 54 mountain railways and lifts as well as 360 kilometers of pistes. The region called Matterhorn glacier paradise is Europe's largest and highest lying summer skiing region. Numerous national ski teams train here in the summer.
The region is legendary amongst mountaineers: the Haute Route, a challenging international route that takes several days to complete, leads from Mont Blanc to Zermatt. Over 400 kilometers of hiking trails lead through and out of the Matter Valley, including the mule traders' trails, which date back to the 13th century (a part of these paths is paved).
In winter, the snow-assured ski region offers 360 km of pistes in three varied ski areas: the Sunnegga-Rothorn, Gornergrat-Stockhorn, Schwarzsee and Matterhorn glacier paradise. Snowboarders and freestylers are able to hone their skills in the Snowpark Zermatt in which Olympic hopefuls also train. A crossover to the Italian ski region of Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche is possible from the Matterhorn glacier paradise / Theodulpass.
Those in search of something different can try their hand at paragliding or off-piste heli-skiing accompanied by an experienced mountain guide.
Walking, cycling, climbing and high-Alpine tours are popular activities in summer and autumn. Every year, the four-thousand-metre summits attract many Alpinists. 400 km of walking trails also guide guests who are not overly adept at climbing through the mountainscape around Zermatt.
The cog railway operates between Zermatt and the 3089-metre-high Gornergrat. The summit offers up spectacular views of the Matterhorn, the glaciers and the Monte-Rosa massif.
At 3883 metres in altitude, Europe’s highest vantage point able to be reached by cableway also offers a fascinating panoramic vista of the Matterhorn (4478 metres) and summits of the Swiss, Italian and French Alps. The glacier palace can be admired 15 metres beneath the ice surface. Six ski lifts as well as a cableway provide access to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, the highest summer ski region of the Alps on the Theodul glacier.
Child-care is offered throughout the year in the Zermatt – Matterhorn family resort. And everywhere you see the fun loving «Wolli» mascot, children come first! Lamb Wolli accompanies you on the climate theme path, kids under 9 ski for free in the whole region - and whoever wants to ice-skate at the rink, investigate a cheese dairy or hang around in the climbing hall can! Crystal-clear mountain lakes to swim in further entice, adventurous nature days and exciting visits to the Forest Fun Park.

The pedestrian streets are narrow and lined with shops, restaurants, hotels and inns near the rail station. Homes and houses are scattered throughout, some perched on the lower edge of the mountains.
For a very long time Switzerland and the Alps have been among the most beautiful regions, sought by millions of tourists from all parts of the world. They display the greatest mountains and valleys in their grandest form and have a special charm that is most seductive.
Zermatt is considered Switzerland's most popular visitor destination getting about 2 million visitors a year. So depending on the time of day or the season, this village could get pretty crowded. You might want to come in the shoulder season. Month of May is perfect, if it's late May, especially. Early May you might run into snow on the trails and that gets in the way of your hiking. Late May and early September are pretty much the perfect times to be here.
Zermatt is well-equipped to handle a large number of visitors they get, with 130 hotels in the main village area, not to mention bed-and-breakfasts and other hotels in nearby towns. Many people just come for the day, you can arrive by train in the morning, walk around, although that's not recommended. There's so much to see and do in Zermatt you really want to spend a couple of nights – at least two or even three nights would be very nice. They have got 70 ski lifts if you're a skier, especially in the wintertime they're all functioning. In the summer as we have seen up on the Klein Matterhorn you can ski all year round. And naturally this is heaven for serious rock climbers there. You'll see people with their ropes and spikes in pickaxes walking down the main lane heading for the hills.

The panorama includes 29 peaks that are 4000 meters or more in height, which is practically every tall mountain in Switzerland from one spot.
The Gornergrat, at 10,290 feet, is remarkable for the fact that there's an unbroken range of magnificent snow peaks on every side. There's not a single break in the chain. It's an isolated rocky peak that enables one to survey at leisure the marvelous scenes all around.
In the video we show tips on how to get the most out of your visit, including a delightful easy hiking trail on the lower flank for a nice walk back into Zermatt.
The Gornergrat also boasts the highest shopping mall in Europe. And they've got the highest hotel in the Alps. The outdoor cafe terrace is an ideal spot to sit back, have a beverage and enjoy the view of Europe's tallest mountain, Mont Blanc, right in front of you.

The ski resort of Cervinia and the Matterhorn (Cervino) | 5K 60 FPS
Aerial drone footage of the Alps in Valle d'Aosta around the gorgeous ski resort of Breuil Cervinia in Valtournenche (AO) Italy.
Featuring the World famous Matterhorn (AKA Cervino) on the Italian side of the Alps and the Plateau Rosa, where you can cross the border with Switzerland and head to the pristine town of Zermatt (One that does not allow motor vehicles!).
Also featured the amazing Saint Hubertus Resort, one, if not the best, facility in Cervinia.
Set in a pine forest this is a unique resort and true oasis of comfort and well-being.
They offer spacious apartments from 60 to 120 square meters, all different from each other, decorated and furnished to the smallest detail: stone fireplaces in the living room, Hi-tech kitchen, marble bathrooms, carved sinks. With a distinct attention to minimum details.
Everything here speaks of nature, tranquility and harmony, as in the environment: water from the springs that surround the Resort, warm wood from our pine forest, which you can see from very window. The stone and slate that silently surround us like the Alps and the her majesty the Matterhorn, silent and assuring.
Breuil-Cervinia was founded in the first half of the XX century, and is today, together with Courmayeur, the most famous tourist centre in Valle d’Aosta. Breuil Valley is a vast basin at the top of Valtournenche, 2,000 metres high.
Already known to mountaineers who attempted to climb Cervino at the end of the eighteenth-century, its fortunate tourist development was due to the large cable railway systems.
Thanks to a considerable increase in the accommodation and sporting structures, this district is today a holiday resort of international level and fame.
The ski resort offers unbeatable natural scenery, dominated by Cervino, which reigns supreme with its unmistakable, granite pyramid; the domaine-skiable, connected to the Swiss pistes of Zermatt and those in Valtournenche, extend for 350 kilometres: it is one of the largest in the Alps, where you can ski all day without doing the same stretch twice, therefore offering you the possibility to choose from a vast range of routes suitable for every type of skier.
In the company of a ski instructor or an Alpine guide, you can take some of the most spectacular, off-piste routes in the Alps.
Here, you can ski all year round, even in the summer, thanks to the systems that allow you to quickly reach the Plateau Rosa and Ventina glaciers.
There are plenty of walks for lovers of trekking.
Cervinia offers a 18 hole golf course and one of the highest in Europe; there is an illuminated ice skating and rollerblading system, there are indoor, heated swimming pools, tennis courts, horse-riding, play areas and adventure parks and sports fishing and you can also heliski.
And for the most fearless, Breuil Cervinia offers you the chance to paraglide, kite sail, air board or go snow tubbing, snow biking and take excursions on a snowmobile.
Cervino, “the most noble rock in Europe”, as was defined by an old, admiring visitor, with its majestic mass has always represented an irresistible attraction for mountaineering enthusiasts.
Plenty of people, some of whom famous, have managed to climb to the top of this fascinating peak thanks to the experienced guidance of Valdostane Alpine Guides.

Fly Fishing Zermatt
What is the most spectacular and beautiful destination for fly fishing? Try Zermatt Switzerland in view of the majestic Matterhorn. In a high alpine lake professional fly fishing guide Kirk Tinham has created the dream location for skilled fly fishing at it's best. Fly fishing is a hugely popular sport worldwide, however Alpine fishing has always been a relatively inaccessible activity. That is until now…
No matter if you’re a beginner or a seasoned trout hunter, Fly Fish Zermatt gives you the opportunity to book a tailor made private tour on this stunning Alpine lake for an unforgettable fly fishing experience.
There are two species of fish found in the lake: Trout and Char, of which we have Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Arctic Char and Lake Trout (which despite the name is also from the Char family). The fish live a wild life in this lake and no artificial food is provided. They hunt for their prey which keeps them very fit and healthy and they also reproduce naturally. The cold, well-oxygenated water produces beautiful pure wild fish, and when caught these “homegrown” fish are recognisable from their amazing colours and smaller size.
Our privately owned tranquil mountain lake is situated at 2500m and nestled in a deep valley enclosed between steeply scarped mountains, dominated by the huge and gracefully curved pyramid of the Matterhorn.
The lake its self is approximately 250m long, 50m wide and 5m deep in the centre. There are no trees around the lake which makes it ideal to learn to cast a fly line or perfect your long casts. The lake has its own diverse ecosystem which you will learn more about on your tour and this will really aid you in catching your own mountain trout.
In the images above you can see a small selection of the natural trout food that exists in and around the lake. We do not feed the fish any artificial pellets which means they actively search for their prey and live a very wild life. This is noticeable in the quality of the trout, both in the fight while playing the fish and the superb taste when they are prepared by the restaurant for us.
Sitting at the foot of a beautiful glacier, natural glacier water flows through mountains and into the lake, exiting via a small waterfall. The water is extremely pure and crystal clear, making it easy to see up to two meters deep which is perfect for stalking these mountain Trout. Despite the sometimes very warm air temperatures on a nice summer’s day, the water temperature remains very cold which increases the oxygen levels in the water and results in very healthy, strong fighting fish.
