STORYLINE:
Crowds of relatives gathered at Beijing's largest cemetery Friday to practice a tradition dating back thousands of years -- the Qing Ming tomb sweeping ceremony.
The scene is repeated throughout Chinese communities in Asia where (m) millions of people mark this day of 'Pure Brightness' - a translation from the Chinese - which symbolizes the onset of spring and for farmers a new planting season.
For people who have lost family members, it is a time to remember the dead.
At Ba Bao Shan Cemetery there's a special burial place for China's martyrs, or national heroes
Friends and relatives of two journalists from the Guangming Daily newspaper place flowers at the grave of the couple killed during the accidental 1999 NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
Polishing head stones and placing offerings of wine and food at the grave are believed to provide comfort in the next life.
But China's cemeteries are so over crowded that many families are turning to cremation.
The Internet offers a fresh alternative to people who wish to pay their respects with symbolic floral wreaths and a selection of poetry dedicated to the dead and these electronic postings will survive the flowers left in more traditional remembrance.
