Flowers and Sand Sculpture at the South Carolina 2013 State Fair
Here are just a few of the beautiful exhibits of flowers in the Ellison Building at the South Carolina 2013 State Fair. Flowers and a few other exhibits, including a large sand sculpture, a lemonade fountain, and a mechanized miniature display of many of the rides available at the Fair. Fun for everyone, in other words.
Agri+Culture: Following Food from Farm to the Fork in South Carolina
This documentary explores the rise of the farm to fork movement in South Carolina, and highlights some of the folks who are working hard to promote and produce fresh, good tasting, safe, local foods. The rise of locavorism leads people to shop for food grown in their community for what locavores consider a healthy and safe food source, that wasn't shipped from across the country, or from a foreign country. This film introduces you to some of the local characters that are growing, cooking, and buying our state's bounty of fresh vegetables and meat. The film's narrator, Erin Eisele, leads you on an intimate journey as she gets to know and understand what makes these folks passionate about what they do to strengthen and support farming in our state. Special thanks to the film's creator, Dr. Buz Kloot, for his never ending energy, insight, and vision. This project was created through an outreach agreement between SC USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and the University of SC-Earth Sciences and Resources Institute. A little more information on our guide to Charleston, SC....
The cover photo is in front of Black Tap, a great place to grab locally roasted craft coffee.
The mural featured in the intro is by local legend Shepard Fairey and can be found right across from The Daily, one of our favorite breakfast spots.
We started our day at some of the city's most iconic spots...
the pineapple fountain at Waterfront Park, Battery Park, and Rainbow Row.
We then had brunch at Millers All Day, a new spot that has fresh local fair and fun cocktails. Everything we've tried thus far has been delicious.
The best shopping can be had right next to Millers on Lower King Street. We popped into the Preservation Society which features products made in Charleston. The Historic City Market was our next stop. It is also full of local crafts, most notably sweetgrass baskets. The Market is where you can find the carriage tours ($26), bike taxis ($5 for 10mins), and bike shares ($12 for a day).
Featured next is the Ansonborough neighborhood where you'll find Canes Rhum Bar. It has the best Happy Hour...$10 for a drink and a small plate. Near by is Liberty Square, where you'll find the South Carolina Aquarium ($30) and Fort Sumter National Monument ($22).
We then head to East Central/North Morrison Drive past Mercantile and Mash (coffee, lunch, grab and go) and Revelry Brewing to a new hot spot for tech companies as well as restaurants such as Edmound Oast ($4 Happy Hour), Butcher and Bee (veggie-centric, middle eastern twist on local produce) and Goat, Sheep, Cow (obviously, cheese).
Also on the Upper Peninsula (did we mention Charleston is a peninsula) is Rodney Scott's, some of the best and most affordable local BBQ (a sandwich with one side is $9). A 5 minute bike ride away is Hampton Park, the city's largest and arguably most picturesque green space. Before leaving this area, we feature Pancito and Lefty's our go-to for tacos and mescal tastings.
Then we jump to Elliotsborough, where you can find NotSo Hostel (dorm $28, private $68). As mentioned it's a short walk from Eclectic Cafe and Vinyl (a coffee and record shop with live music), Sugar Bakeshop, Xiao Bao Biscuit (a funky mix of foods from east and south Asia), Mini Bar, Fuel, D'Als Pizza, and Warehouse.
We end the guide on Upper King which has too many bars and restaurants to name! One of the most notable is Callie's Hot Little Biscuit which serves some of the best southern biscuits from 10pm to 2am on the weekend.
We hope you enjoy Charleston as much as we do!

The North Carolina Barbecue Trail - Legends and Revolutionary (OV)
This historic trail leads barbecue fans through the whole state of NC to some of the best BBQ joints. These pitmasters keep the traditional craft alive: Their pits are fueled only by charcoal or wood, they make their own sauce and they are in the barbecue business for more than 15 years.
This roadtrip is about iconic restaurants on the trail, pitmasters who dream of becoming a part of it and those, who search for the best barbecue - regardless of whether it's cooked traditionally or not.
700 Pound Snake Pulled out of Lake in North Carolina
Giant 700 pound snake caught in lake in Proctor, North Carolina. The giant man eating python was measured at 98 feet long. Police were contacted to see if there have been any recently filed missing person reports as a snake this big could have surely eaten a human.
This giant snake is massive and just gorgeous, but it didn't take long to find out that the STORY behind it... was fake, just another hoax.
While the image is indeed real, I think the size of the giant snake could have been exaggerated due to the camera angle
Nevertheless, this snake is still huge, but where did it come from? The markings on it's skin looks similar to that of a reticulated python native to Southeast Asia. After playing around with a little Google translate, the mystery was finally solved.
This giant python came from Indonesia and after some rough translating, it turns out that it was discovered this last Thanksgiving near the village of Belinyu City. It was found by accident by a group of construction workers who severely injured the reptile while knocking down a large dead tree in which the python was sleeping inside of. The workers put the dying snake out of it's misery and buried it.
It's sad to see such an incredible animal killed, especially one that could have been a new world record size. I wish there were more pictures so we could get a better idea of just how large it was.
I really enjoyed learning about this amazing snake, if you guys have any cool wildlife stories or interesting animals that you think I might enjoy, tell me about it on Facebook

Al Sharpton Threatens America: No 'Election Without Republicans Addressing Policing'
While he was speaking at the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, Obama's Race Czar Al Sharpton issued what some see as a threat against the 2016 GOP convention to be held in that city and the electoral process in general. He also promised to hold a competing event outside the convention, Cleveland.com said.
You will not have an election without Republicans addressing policing, he told the packed crowd.

In the United States, barbecue refers to a technique of cooking meat outdoors over a fire; often this is called pit barbecue, and the facility for cooking it is the barbecue pit. This form of cooking adds a distinctive smoky taste to the meat; barbecue sauce, while a common accompaniment, is not required for many styles.Often the proprietors of Southern-style barbecue establishments in other areas originate from the South. In the South, barbecue is more than just a style of cooking, but a subculture with wide variation between regions, and fierce rivalry for titles at barbecue competitions.

Auburn Coach Wife Kristi Malzahn Agrees with Match & eHarmony: Men are Jerks
My advice is this: Settle! That's right. Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling Bravo! in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go. Based on my observations, in fact, settling will probably make you happier in the long run, since many of those who marry with great expectations become more disillusioned with each passing year. (It's hard to maintain that level of zing when the conversation morphs into discussions about who's changing the diapers or balancing the checkbook.)
Obviously, I wasn't always an advocate of settling. In fact, it took not settling to make me realize that settling is the better option, and even though settling is a rampant phenomenon, talking about it in a positive light makes people profoundly uncomfortable. Whenever I make the case for settling, people look at me with creased brows of disapproval or frowns of disappointment, the way a child might look at an older sibling who just informed her that Jerry's Kids aren't going to walk, even if you send them money. It's not only politically incorrect to get behind settling, it's downright un-American. Our culture tells us to keep our eyes on the prize (while our mothers, who know better, tell us not to be so picky), and the theme of holding out for true love (whatever that is—look at the divorce rate) permeates our collective mentality.
Even situation comedies, starting in the 1970s with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and going all the way to Friends, feature endearing single women in the dating trenches, and there's supposed to be something romantic and even heroic about their search for true love. Of course, the crucial difference is that, whereas the earlier series begins after Mary has been jilted by her fiancé, the more modern-day Friends opens as Rachel Green leaves her nice-guy orthodontist fiancé at the altar simply because she isn't feeling it. But either way, in episode after episode, as both women continue to be unlucky in love, settling starts to look pretty darn appealing. Mary is supposed to be contentedly independent and fulfilled by her newsroom family, but in fact her life seems lonely. Are we to assume that at the end of the series, Mary, by then in her late 30s, found her soul mate after the lights in the newsroom went out and her work family was disbanded? If her experience was anything like mine or that of my single friends, it's unlikely.
And while Rachel and her supposed soul mate, Ross, finally get together (for the umpteenth time) in the finale of Friends, do we feel confident that she'll be happier with Ross than she would have been had she settled down with Barry, the orthodontist, 10 years earlier? She and Ross have passion but have never had long-term stability, and the fireworks she experiences with him but not with Barry might actually turn out to be a liability, given how many times their relationship has already gone up in flames. It's equally questionable whether Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw, who cheated on her kindhearted and generous boyfriend, Aidan, only to end up with the more exciting but self-absorbed Mr. Big, will be better off in the framework of marriage and family. (Some time after the breakup, when Carrie ran into Aidan on the street, he was carrying his infant in a Baby Björn. Can anyone imagine Mr. Big walking around with a Björn?)
