Ep 149 | Checking in and Checking Out Hiva Oa, Marquesas, French Polynesia, Sailing Nutshell
We arrive at Hiva Oa, Marquesas, French Polynesia, after 25 days at sea.
It’s time to check in and have a look around and try to find some fresh produce.
We do the 3km hike up and over the hill to the little village, but there isn’t much fresh stuff to purchase. We need to wait for the supply ship to replenish the shelves. But, we do manage to get baguettes which makes us really happy!
A couple of supply ships turn up so we replenish our stores.
After a few days at Hiva Oa we head off to the nearby island to check out a beach anchorage and then head back to Hiva Oa to the north side of the island.

I spent longer time by filming in different islands,in different remote places, so I could feel the real wild nature with abandoned places and the life energy - the “mana” of indigenous people. I was attend a dance festival, which was really amazing, unique moment. To see that many variety of indigenous dances and dancers was a life time experience. Every Island have their own special dance moves, special costumes & songs.
About festival:
The most recent festivals have brought together over 1800 participants from islands outside of the Marquesas. Youth, their families and instructors come from other Polynesian islands which stretches out to Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. Those attending this rare event will be immersed an opportunity to dive into the heart of the traditions of Polynesia.

Ep. 19 French Polynesia: The Gambier Islands
After the challenging 12-day sail from Rapa Nui (Easter Island) to the Gambier Islands, we savored our first taste of French Polynesia. The Gambiers are rarely visited by cruisers because they are off the more popular “Coconut Milk Run” route from the Americas, wherein landfall is typically made in the northern island chain of the Marquesas. Despite having to tackle some rather unpleasant boat projects, we had plenty of fun and learned a lot! We hiked the second highest peak on the island of Mangareva, visited a pearl farm, and enjoyed the company of a local family and trio of young sailors who had taken up residence on the out-island of Taravai. Neil successfully speared his first fish, we got out the drone, and we spent a lot of time with our new friends on s/v Romano. If we have our druthers, we’ll get back there again…it was worth the long, lonely sail to get there!

LAND HO! After 27 Days at SEA, Exploring Hiva Oa, Marquesas S2E5
After 27 days at crossing 3,500 nautical miles of the South Pacific Ben, Sahia, and Linus sight land of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas. The propeller shaft falls off as they enter port. Something was lost in the translation with the boat yard and the boat is anchored in a questionable location in Tahuaka Bay until the next year. Ben and Sahia say goodbye... at least for a few days. The crew tours Atuona. Linus tries to solve the mystery of the missing fresh water. Ben and Linus get lost attempting to climb Mont Temetiu on Hiva Oa. They turn around on the ridge 800 meters up on the path to Hanemenu Bay. Linus leaves the boat at Marquesas Maintenance Services and gets a ride to the airport for his flight to Tahiti.
The Slow Boat has just over a month to sail the 3,500 nautical miles to Hiva Oa from La Libertad, Ecuador. There would be no time for the extra 700 nm to Tahiti or a month's quarantine.
Sahia, Ben, and Linus depart the yacht club and sail west overnight. The crew gets seasick and headwinds make them turn north of the rhumb line or the great circle route to the Marquesas.

TROUBLE SAILING around ATUONA, Secret Anchorages - Hiva Oa - Tahuata - Fatu Hiva - Hanemenu S2E12
Linus and Daly's sailing trip to and from Atuona, Hiva Oa was filled with mishaps and set backs, but they find awesome undiscovered anchorages along the way. The propeller shaft decouples on the early morning sail from Bay of Virgins, Hanavave, Fatu Hiva to Atuona, Tahuaka Bay, Hiva Oa. Linus has a spare bolt, but gets pretty grimy in the process. Moreover, they are too late to buy more diesel that weekend. Leaving the anchorage Linus fails to put a safety on the anchor chain in addition to the pawl and it deploys accidentally, letting out out the anchor and almost 200 feet of chain in deep water. Linus has to drive the anchor and chain back in the shallows to pull it up by hand. Steep 7-foot seas made it hard to go upwind to exit Tahuaka Bay, Atuona.
Linus discards his plans to sail to Hanamenu Bay, Hiva Oa on the northwest side of the island and instead sails to a closer no-name harbor on the northwest side of the island of Tahuata with white-sand beaches. The next day Linus and Daly sail to Hanemenu and explore the deserted settlement with a couple of cruisers. Its amazing how nearby islands and different sides of the small islands have dramatically different climates. Some bays are arid while others resemble a rain forest.
