Maitland is a city in the Lower Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia and the seat of Maitland City Council, situated on the Hunter River approximately 166 kilometres by road north of Sydney and 35 km north-west of Newcastle. It is on the New England Highway about 17 km from its start at Hexham. At the 2011 census it had approximately 67,478 inhabitants, spread over an area of 390.2 square kilometres , with most of the population located in a strip along the New England Highway between the suburbs of Rutherford and Metford respectively.   • 1. Maitland Gaol East Maitland
    The Maitland Gaol, also known as Maitland Correctional Centre, is a former Australian prison located in East Maitland, New South Wales. Its construction was started in 1844 and prisoners first entered the gaol in 1848. By the time of its closure, on 31 January 1998, it had become the longest continuously-run gaol in Australia. It has since been turned into a museum and is a popular tourist attraction. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.
