Grianan Ailech, County Donegal
We visited the famous Grianán Ailech on the 10th August 2013. Here is a little amateur video I made showing the interior of the site. The original music used in this video was written and performed by Enda Seery, with John Byrne on guitar. Please visit endaseery.com for more incredible Irish music.
The name Grianán means 'Sunny Place' but unfortunately as you can see from the video the weather was far from sunny for us! The site is located around 8km north-west of Derry, and it probably dates to the late Iron-Age / Early Medieval period and was the residence of the Ui Neill Kings of Ailech, a powerful dynasty in Irish History. The Annals of Ireland record the sites destruction in AD 676 and again in AD1101 when the King of Munster had his men reduce it to ruins.
