Central Australia, also known as the Alice Springs Region, is one of the five regions in the Northern Territory of Australia. The term Central Australia is used to describe an area centred on Alice Springs. It is sometimes referred to as Centralia; likewise the people of the area are sometimes called Centralians. The region is located in the southern part of the Northern Territory spanning from the west on the Western Australian Border to the east on the Queensland border.

  • 1. Lake Mary Ann Tennant Creek
    Lake Mary Ann is situated about 5 kilometres north of Tennant Creek, Northern Territory just off the Stuart Highway. It is a man-made dam where some water sports can be conducted such as swimming or canoeing, surrounded by landscaped grassy areas on one side and natural bushland on the other. Council is currently spending half a million dollars as first stage of a major upgrade to the facility. Originally the site was investigated with a view to increase the water supply for Tennant Creek and Peko Mine in the late 1940s, and later again in the mid-1950s. In 1977, several local residents proposed that a recreational dam could be constructed close to Tennant Creek. The NT Government supported the proposal and construction commenced during 1979/80.   • 2. Redbank Gorge West Macdonnell National Park
    Redbank Gorge , is a gorge located in the Northern Territory of Australia, 156 km west of Alice Springs. It is situated at the bottom of Mount Sonder. The gorge is part of the West MacDonnell National Park, which has an area of approximately 2,568 square kilometres .
