Thanks to Frank and Jerry of Zouba Tours: for taking me around. I paid for this tour, but they did a great job and I would recommend them.
Kunming, Yunnan, China - Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan province China. So I was excited to explore the local market in Kunming and eat as much street food as possible!
Here are all the Chinese street food dishes we ate throughout the market:
Rice pudding - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was slightly fermented, and sweet, like a rice alcohol pudding. It was pretty good, but quite sweet, so I couldn’t eat that much of it.
Dumpling - 1 RMB ($0.15) - I saw these dumplings sizzling and hissing and there was no way I could walk by without trying one. Stuffed inside were leek and egg. They were a little on the oily side, but delicious.
Whole duck - 20 RMB ($3.03) - Yunnan is famous for roast duck, and there’s a version that’s comparable even to Beijing style. Style I was excited to find a stall that at the market that specialize in Yunnanese roast duck. It was delicious and the owners were very friendly as well.
Pickled pears - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was an interesting snack, and supposed to be very healthy and good for digestion.
Drink - 2 RMB ($0.30) - This drink was incredible sweet, but refreshing.
Tofu Noodles - 5.5 RMB ($0.83) - Another extremely popular Chinese street food snack at the market was tofu noodles - I’ve had tofu and noodles, but not really mixed before. It was a little plain and starchy, but from all the sauces, it was taty.
Rice balls - 5 RMB ($0.76) - We also tried sesame rice balls which were delicious.
Jacuzzi braised ½ chicken - 15 RMB ($2.27) - This was one of the highlights of the market for me, mainly because the owner was so friendly and his giant jacuzzi of boiling chickens was amazing to see! The chicken was a little bony, but flavorful.
Yellow soybean porridge - 3.5 RMB ($0.53) - As we were leaving the market, we stopped for one last bowl of soybean porridge to eat with youtiau, Chinese donuts. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did, but it was delicious. It was very warming and hearty.
Finally to complete this Chinese street food tour in Kunming, Jerry and I, along with his family ate Chinese Yunnanese bbq. It was tasty and a great way to end this amazing day of street food.
Special thanks to Zouba Tours ( for arranging everything in this video. I paid for this tour, but I think they did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the tour.
That completes Day 4 of this Chinese food tour of Yunnan. If you haven’t already, watch the full series here:

Colorful Crawford Market in Mumbai - India Travel
Typical Indian market in a historic building.
While most of Mumbai's shopping areas provide memorable shopping experiences, one of them, Crawford Market in south Mumbai, offers heritage as well. The Crawford Market has a very interesting blend of English architecture and local flavor, and it makes it the must visit place of many visitors to Mumbai. Close to 150 years old, this market was named after Sir Arthur Crawford, who was the first municipal commissioner of Mumbai, during British colonization. Bloody frescoes of Indian farmers working on wheatfields, which are outside the building of Crawford Market, which looks very decidedly British. Now, recently, Crawford Market was renamed as Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market. But visitors and locals still prefer to call it Crawford Market.
Before the liberalization of the 1990s, this was one of the few reliable places where you could buy trustworthy international brands of cheese, chocolate, and olive oil. While foreign foods are now more commonly available in India, one can still buy the same goods here at discounted prices. Even today, Crawford Market is one of the favorite places to buy fruits, vegetables, and meat. And during summer, you cannot miss the sight of mangoes in this market. And if you have not tried Mumbai's world famous Alphonso mango, you are missing out on something. Right next to Crawford Market is Mangal Das Market, a wholesale textile markets. Now, here, dress fabric and saris can be bought at reasonable prices. Few people know that fabrics for the costumes used in the film, Kama Sutra, were purchased from this very market. In fact, the movie industry's one of the major buyers of this place. Other than food and clothes, there are a host of other products available at the Crawford Market. Like, for example, this entire lane is a plastic market, where you can find anything and everything made out of plastic for household use. While some old timers feel that the market has become too modern, many still believe that it retains its old world charm. I am Premjit Singh, showing you Mumbai.
Laxmi Vilas Palace (Vadodara - Gujarat - India)
(EN) The term Maharaja Palace actually refers to a series of palaces in Vadodara, India, constructed since the Gaekwad family started ruling the Vadodara State. The first one was a building known as the Sarkar Wada. This building, not really a palace, was given up for the Nazarbaug Palace built in old classical style. This once a magnificent building is now in a dilapidated state.
After this the Lakshmi Vilas Palace, an extravagant building of the Indo-Saracenic school, was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890 at a cost of GBP180,000. Major Charles Mant was the architect.
It is reputed to have been the largest private dwelling built in the nineteenth century and four times the size of Buckingham Palace. At the time of construction it boasted the most modern amenities such as elevators and the interior is reminiscent of a large European country house. It remains the residence of the Royal Family, who continue to be held in high esteem by the residents of Baroda.
Its ornate Darbar Hall, which is sometimes the venue of music concerts and other cultural events, has a Venetian mosaic floor, Belgium stained glass windows and walls with intricate mosaic decorations. Outside of the Darbar Hall is an Italinate courtyard of water fountains. The palace houses a remarkable collection of old armoury and sculptures in bronze, marble & terracotta by Fellici. The grounds were landscaped by William Goldring, a specialist from Kew Gardens. The palace is open to the public and an audio tour is available.
The Palace compound is of over 700 acres (2.8 km2) and houses a number of buildings, particularly the Moti Baug Palace and the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum building. Adjacent to the Motibaug Palace and the Museum is the Moti Bagh Cricket Ground, the offices of the Baroda Cricket Association, and a very rare indoor teak floored tennis court and badminton court (where the All India Badminton Championships were previously held). There are also two clay tennis courts plus a derelict fives court.
The Museum building was constructed as a school for the Maharaja's children. Today a large number of works of art belonging to the Royal family have been displayed in the museum. The most remarkable of these is the fabulous collection of the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, who was specially commissioned by the then Maharaja of Baroda. The collection includes portraits of the Royal family in addition to the paintings based on Hindu mythology for which Raja Ravi Varma was famous.
The Maharaja constructed a miniature railway line, which circled the mango orchard within the palace compound, to take his children from the school to the main Lakshmi Vilas Palace. The train engine was recently refurbished by Ranjitsinh Gaekwad, the current maharaja, and can be seen at the entrance to the Museum.
The palace also boasted a small zoo. The only remnant of the zoo is the pond where a number of crocodiles remain. The Navlakhi (literally meaning of nine hundred thousand) Well, a fine 'baoli' or step well, is 50 metres north of the palace.
In the 1930s Maharaja Pratapsinh created a golf course for use by his European guests. In the 1990s Pratapsinh's grandson Samarjitsinh, a former Ranji trophy cricket player, renovated the course and opened it to the public. The course was expanded in 2004 into a beautiful course managed by the Gaekwad Baroda Golf Club and now boasts over 300 members. The Motibaug Palace is now the club house for the club, behind which are a large new swimming pool designed by the renowned architect Karan Grover, sauna and gym facilities. Packs of langoors & peacocks can be spotted around the palace compound. The present management of the club have used the old British spelling Lukshmi Vilas Palace instead of the better known Lakshmi Vilas Palace.
Two other palaces in Baroda were the Makarpura Palace, built on the southern outskirts of Baroda which now houses a defence installation and Pratap Vilas Palace, which houses the prestigious Railway Staff College of India.
