April flowers in Saint-Aignan, France
We're having really cold mornings, with temperatures down to or near freezing. We're all hoping the flowers survive, especially the blossons of fruit trees and out in the vineyard.

Orléans is a city on the banks of the Loire River in north-central France, and it’s the capital of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Joan of Arc famously saved the city from English siege in 1429, an event celebrated with an annual festival. A re-creation of the house where she stayed during the battle, the Maison de Jeanne d’Arc, features multimedia exhibits on her life.
Orleans, the capital of the department of the Loiret and the Centre region of France (no not Tours) is a city that has struggled to return to former glories after being devastated during World War II. History has not been kind to Orleans what with the Romans, Attila the Hun and the English all doing their best to wipe it out even before then. A few historic buildings have survived and they, along with the obvious Joan of Arc connection keep it on the Loire Valley tourist map.
Welcoming more visitors than any other attraction in the department, the Parc Floral de la Source is a semi-wild park next to the university, where Orléans meets the countryside. If you visit the tourist office they'll provide you with an itinerary to enable you to visit the main sites of interest in the city and appreciate the Romanesque churches, the many examples of renaissance architecture, the half timbered houses and the various museums throughout the city.
The three main places of interest have to be the impressive cathedral 'Ste-Croix', Hotel Groslot (former Hotel de Ville) and the re-creation of Joan of Arc's house on Place General-de-Gaulle. The kids might enjoy this more than adults so be sure to give a little insight into her history as an introduction.
Don't miss taking the kids, especially the younger ones, to Parc Floral de la Source a 32 hectare site which has everything from a butterfly kingdom ,kid's play area, puppet shows and glorious garden displays. It can be found south of the river in the direction of St-Cyr-en-Val. There is an entrance fee for adults - kids under 6 free. From the end of April to the first week in May, the anniversary of the liberation of Orleans by Joan of Arc is celebrated by a series of events including :medieval festival and market, concerts, exhibitions, sound and light displays plus various processions commencing with 'Joan' entering the city through the 'Port de Bourgogne'.
The high points of these festivities are during the first couple of days with the ceremony of the standard handed from the mayor to the bishop, the commemorative parades, concerts in the town and a firework display on the facade of the cathedral. Alot to see in Orleans such as :

Saint-Aignan d'Orléans is a collegiate church in the Bourgogne quarter of Orléans on the north bank of the Loire. The church is dedicated to Anianus, a fifth-century bishop of Orléans, who, according to legend, persuaded Attila the Hun not to sack the city.
According to Gregory of Tours, there was a basilica with a shrine to Anianus where Bishop Namatius was buried after his death in 587. A monastery dedicated to Anianus existed in the first half of the seventh century, because in 651 its abbot, Leodebodus, left to found a new monastery at Fleury on land donated by King Clovis II. According to the Chronicle of Fredegar, written in the middle of the century, the shrine of Anianus was comparable in importance to that of Saint Martin of Tours. Queen Balthild (died 680) supported reform there by introducing the rule of Benedict and that of the Irish missionary Columbanus.
By the ninth century, the abbacy at Saint-Aignan was the vitual hereditary possession of a noble family, the counts of Orléans. During the reign of Louis the Pious, Count Odo I (died 834) tried to confiscate all the churches in the Orléanais and usurp the abbacy of Saint-Aignan. Mid-century, control of the monastery passed to the bishops, who also controlled the countship, and later in the century to the Robertian dynasty. To historians of this period, urban Saint-Aignan is more obscure than its rural daughter house at Fleury.
In the Illatio sancti Benedicti, composed between 1010 and 1018, Theodoric of Fleury recounts a legend then current at Fleury. When some Vikings attacked Fleury by sailing down the Loire, the relics of Benedict of Nursia were brought to Saint-Aignan for safekeeping. The monks there sued to keep them, but by a miracle they were sailed back down the frozen river to Fleury when the danger was past.
The monastery of Saint-Aignan was rededicated in 1029. At the time its main altar was jointly dedicated to Saints Peter and Anianus, while the altar in the choir was dedicated to Anianus alone, whose relics lay in the crypt below it. There were twelve minor altars lining the nave, dedicated to saints of both local and universal importance, but the six local saints whose relics the church possessed did not have any altars, liturgies or hagiographies at all. Shortly after this date, the bones of Saint Euspicius were transferred to Saint-Mesmin de Micy. In the 1070s, an anonymous monk of Saint-Aignan composed the Miracula sancti Aniani, a collection of stories of miracles performed by Anianus.

Orleans is a city in north-central France, about 111 kilometres (69 mi) southwest of Paris. Orleans is the capital of the Loiret department and of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Orléans is located on the Loire River where the river curves south towards the Massif Central. New Orleans (French: La Nouvelle-Orléans), in Louisiana, United States, is named after the city.
TAO manages buses and tram lines in Orléans. Orléans is an autoroute intersection : the A10 (linking Paris to Bordeaux) links to the commune outskirts, and A71 (whose bridge over the Loire is outside the commune limits) begins here, heading for the Mediterranean via Clermont-Ferrand (where it becomes the A75). Orléans is served by two main railway stations: the central Gare d'Orléans and the Gare des Aubrais-Orléans, in the northern suburbs. Most long-distance trains call only at the Les Aubrais-Orléans station, which offers connections to Paris, Lille, Tours, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Nevers, and several regional destinations.
