Diego de Almagro , also known as El Adelantado and El Viejo, was a Spanish conquistador known for his exploits in western South America. He participated with Francisco Pizarro in the Spanish conquest of Peru. From Peru Almagro led an expedition that made him the second European to set foot in central Chile . Back in Peru a longstanding conflict with Pizarro over the control of the former Inca capital of Cuzco erupted into a civil war between the two bands of conquistadores. In the battle of Las Salinas in 1538 Almagro was defeated by the Pizarro brothers and months later he was executed.

Amalgro is a name of Arabic origin referring to the local red clay, which is one of the materials used in the plaza mayor. Probably the settlement began as a small Muslim castle, possibly on the site now occupied by the hermitage of San Juan. The fief was bestowed on Gonzalo Yáñez de Noboa, ninth Grand Master of the Order of Calatrava, after the Battle of the Navas de Tolosa, and the grant was confirmed by Ferdinand III in 1222.     Iglesia de la Madre de Dios is a Roman Catholic church located in Almagro, Spain. It is situated in what was the Hospital de Nuestra Señora de La Mayor, on lots purchased by the town in 1546. It features late Gothic and Renaissance styles, a pattern found in other parts of Castile-La Mancha as well. It is the largest church in the province, surpassing even the Cathedral of Ciudad Real. The facade, with large buttresses, has a large rose window of brick dated 1602. The tower, built unfinished on the right side of the facade, is the work of Benito de Soto.

In Spanish all secular plays were called comedias, which embraced three genres: tragedy, drama, and comedy itself. During the Spanish Golden Age, corrals became popular sites for theatrical presentations in the early 16th century, when the theater took on a special importance in the country. The performance was held in the afternoon and lasted two to three hours, there being no intermission, and few breaks. The entertainment was continuous, including complete shows with parts sung and danced. All spectators were placed according to their sex and social status.

    Almagro is a town and municipality situated in Ciudad Real province, in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha, Spain. A tourist destination, Almagro is designated a Conjunto histórico, a type of conservation area. Almagro lies within small Paleozoic mountain ranges, with some reserves of shallow creeks, including the Pellejero and de Cuetos. It also lies within a volcanic zone , which lies upon a quartzite massif. It makes the zone particularly unique, together with that of the zones of Olot and Cabo de Gata, in the sense that it is one of the few important zones of volcanic origin in the Iberian Peninsula. An International Festival of Classical Theater has also been celebrated here annually since 1978.
