10 Real Haunted Ghost Towns to See in America!
Want to visit a REAL ghost town? Spooky abandoned post-apocalyptic villages aren’t just the stuff of movies - there are plenty right here in America, and some are said to be haunted!
1. Bodie, California
This National Historic Landmark is a perfectly preserved example of the late nineteenth century gold mining towns of California. Rumor has it, any visitor who tries to sneak off with an artifact from this ghost town will be cursed with bad luck!
2. St. Elmo, Colorado
St. Elmo was a lively mining center with a booming population of 2000 until the local railroad closed down. Apparently, the ghost of former resident Annabelle Stark keeps watch over the town.
3. Centralia, Pennsylvania
Centralia is home to 10 stubborn people who refuse to move and was the main inspiration for the horror movie Silent Hill. A mine fire which has been burning under the town since 1962 has caused most residents to leave over the years.
4. Bannack, Montana
With a thriving population of 10,000 it was nicknamed the New Eldorado by the hopeful prospectors. It also once had an outlaw gang leader as its sheriff. Each July, there’s a re-enactment festival celebrating the town’s former glory.
5. Cahawba, Alabama
Cahawba was once the capital of Alabama but today is an archeological park open to visitors. You can wander around and view the many abandoned streets and ruins of this formerly important governmental center.
6. Rhyolite, Nevada
First established as a mining camp near Death Valley in 1905, Rhyolite saw its peak during the American gold rush. It’s a great testament of the boom and bust cycle of this era.
7. Terlingua, Texas
Once a district of mining villages, today a ghost town, reduced to several closed mines and many abandoned industrial facilities, businesses and homes. However there’s still a working saloon for those seeking the authentic Old West experience.
8. Oatman, Arizona
Located in the Black Mountains it became famous when 10 million dollars worth of gold was discovered in the area. Wild burros now roam the streets and gunfights are staged on the weekends.
9. Glenrio, Texas
Formerly known as Rock Island it was a railway town which fell into disuse when Interstate 40 bypassed the community in 1973. Visit the Phillips 66 Service Station and other once-busy buildings that are now ghosts of their former glory.
10. Kennecott, Alaska
One of the most remote ghost towns in America, is an old copper mining town. Virtually abandoned since the Depression in the 1930’s, it now has guided tours allowing visitors to explore the abandoned buildings frozen in time…

Wigwam Motel - California Route 66!
Hey guys! I'm Veronica Hill with California Travel Tips and I'm really excited to show you a tour of the Wigwam Motel in San Bernardino/Rialto on California Route 66!
This Route 66 motel, a beloved relic in San Bernardino since 1949, is the last of three remaining Wigwam motels in the country. (The other two are in Kentucky and Arizona).
Designed by Frank Redford in the Native American style, the Wigwam motels on Route 66 have long been a favorite pilgrimage for Mother Road enthusiasts and are among the best Route 66 attractions. Each concrete teepee boasts updated amenities that include new Serta beds, free WiFi, flat screen TVs and refrigerators. Coffee is available in the lobby. While you're there, be sure to say hi to Kumar Patel, the motel's owner and a passionate Route 66 expert and preservationist.
During your stay, you can take a dip in the kidney-shaped swimming pool, grill up a burger on the barbecue, or explore nearby attractions that include the site of the first McDonald's restaurant (now a Route 66 museum) or the Auto Club Speedway. If you can, time your visit for the annual Route 66 Rendezvous, held here each September.
Fun Fact: The Cozy Cone Motel in Cars Land at Disneyland California Adventure was inspired by the Wigwam Motel in San Bernardino / Rialto and Holbrook, Arizona and the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico. The cozy name comes from the Cozy Dog Drive-In in Springfield, Illinois.

Tip: *Downtown* San Bernardino can be a bit rough, so use caution at night. The location of the motel is perfectly safe.

Thoughts on my Salton Sea road trip: Salton Sea is one of the strangest places I've been to. Huge, smelly, and now completely desolate, Salton Sea used to be one of the top weekend vacation spots for Californians. Blog:
Although empty and barren, you can still see pieces of what used to be a very popular tourist destination. Abandoned stores, towns, and cars can be found scattered all around the lake.

Bombay Beach- Free to enter, nice view, interesting town in front.
Salvation Mountain- Incredible man-made mountain painted in bible verses and words praising God.

We stopped in Amboy, CA to check out one of Harrison Ford's favorite stops, and it's an incredible example of the kind of places GA can take you.
This was also my favorite and the hardest vlog I've ever made, for reasons entirely non-technical. My best friend, Colt, was able to join us for about a day and a half on this trip (he shot all the drone footage in this one), and it turned out to be our last adventure together; he was killed in a tragic airplane accident about two weeks ago. But I'm so happy to share a little bit of him with all of you.

Fast 70 MPH USA Freight Train With Surprise Twist! California/Nevada Dsert
We race against an amazingly fast freight train out in the California-Nevada desert! Although perhaps not a foamer or bona fide rail buff or trainspotter..I DO love a cool train! Heading down from Nevada to California, I turned onto one of my fave partially abandoned, desolate sections of old Route 66 out in the California desert just east of the old town of Amboy. We saw a freight train way in the distance heading in the same direction as us...towards Los Angeles. We were watching the train for about 10 miles...and realized it was getting closer and closer to us. Pretty soon....we were right up along side it. I was doin' 70 MPH (120kmh) and that train was keeping right up! I was driving a new GMC Yukon at the time, a rental unit supplied by a buddy of mine who owns a Budget Rental franchise. We could see a crossing coming up and couldn't believe we were going to arrive at exactly the same moment! This wouldn't be a close call or even a near miss...this is the EXACT same time. I thought that was pretty amazing...driving all that way....all that time...just to end up crossing that train precisely at the same moment in time!! I was thinkin', man, it would be a shame to crash up this nice new 2012 GMC Yukon. Not only that....hahaha...it might hurt just a wee bit! My friends and I are here for a girls getaway, and we're packing in as many sights as possible in the 48 hours we're here. At Morro Strand State Beach, you can fly a kite, go horseback riding, or look for sand dollars along the shore.
But we're here for the kayaking, and we can't wait to start exploring. The sea lions are adorable, but we're hoping to spot some resident sea otters, who can be found wrapping themselves in the kelp near Morro Rock.
After all that exercise, we're famished, and the seafood here is as fresh as it gets. Morro Bay Fish Company is bringing in their daily catch of black cod and buckets of live Dungeness Crab.
After slurping down some oysters at Dockside Too, we head over to Giovanni's for some hot clam chowder. We spend the rest of the afternoon shopping along the Embarcadero, then hit Stax Wine Bar for a tasting of local wines.
If you don't mind a short drive, head to dinner in Cayucos, a coastal beach town that dates back to the 1800s. Although it's famous for the Brown Butter Cookie Company, our favorite discovery is Ruddell's Smokehouse, where you can dig in to Jim's fresh smoked albacore tuna, smoked oysters and some of the best fish tacos and fish sandwiches you'll ever eat.
