Hollins Mill Tunnel in Lynchburg, Virginia
On the west side of downtown Lynchburg, Virginia, Blackwater Creek has carved a steep gorge as it makes its way to the James River. In the mid-19th century several railroad lines were built to connect Lynchburg to the western frontier and to other major cities to the north and east. One of the lines passed through the Blackwater Creek area and a 450 foot long tunnel was constructed. The tunnel was built by African slaves and Irish immigrants by a combination of black powder blasting and hand digging. Two groups started on either end of the tunnel and met in the middle.
The tunnel is named for the nearby Hollins Mill site, a historic water powered mill located along Blackwater Creek. Today, the property is owned by the City of Lynchburg and a popular walking/biking path passes through the tunnel. Hollins Mill Road and McIvor Street both pass over the tunnel. Despite its location right in downtown Lynchburg, the area has a fantastic wild feel to it.

Virginia's Best Hiking Trails | Travel on the Brain
I came to Viriginia to visit its biggest cities and ended up choosing nature instead. Not a bad choice seeing these amazing waterfalls, the explosion of autumn colours and the inspiring scenery. Now, who loves hiking as much as me? Would you consider coming over to Virginia to hike?

Hiking Crabtree Falls near Montebello, Nelson County, Virginia
Some say that Crabtree Falls is the highest waterfall in the eastern United States. I'm not sure, but I do know that it is an awesome series of falls and cascades that rush down the very steep slopes of Pinnacle Ridge. These falls are located in the George Washington National Forest near the communities of Montebello, Tyro, and Massies Mill, in the rugged Blue Ridge Mountains of Nelson County, Virginia. This trail is extremely popular...it's the place to see tourist with their clean white tennis shoes out for a hike. Smell N Roses has NO love for the crowds of people, and none what so ever for the handrails, park benches, platforms, and catwalks installed along the trail....but I managed to make a visit when it there were very few other hikers on the trail to bring you this video of the very nice falls. Thanks so much for watching!

Terrapin Mountain, Jefferson National Forest, VA
Thanks to Smell 'n Roses for his video which tipped me off to the Terrapin Mountain Trail. This ~10 mile loop is located in Jefferson National Forest, Virginia west of Lynchburg. The mountain stands east of the Blue Ridge Mountain Crest and has great views of the FAA Radome on Apple Orchard Mountain, the James River Face Wilderness, and the Peaks of Otter. The climb to the top is steep but there are multiple spots with good views. The second half of the hike follows Reed Creek before returning on a long forest road. It may seem like a drag but it is level, and there is a surprise waterfall right beside the trail.
Apologies if the video is shakier than usual. I just got a replacement phone and forgot to turn on the video stabilizer setting.

Virginia's American Civil War Battlefields
Most of the battles in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War took place in Virginia because the Confederacy had to defend its national capital at Richmond, and public opinion in the North demanded that the Union move On to Richmond! The successes of Robert E. Lee in defending Richmond is a central theme of the military history of the war. The White House of the Confederacy, located a few blocks north of the State Capitol, was home to the family of Confederate leader Jefferson Davis.
