Putaruru Blue Spring & The Arapuni Swingbridge - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 24: Today we’re checking out the beautiful Putaruru Blue Spring and crossing the Arapuni Swingbridge on our tour with our backpacker hostel hosts.

First things first, we are in Arapuni, a small town in the Waikato region with a big swingbridge! Our hosts at the Arapuni Backpackers take us on a bit of tour to the Arapuni Swing Bridge, which crossed the Waikato River, before furthering our walk to check out the hydropower dams and spillways. We have time for a quick lunch back at the Arapuni Backpackers before hitting the road on this backpacking New Zealand trip once again.
But before we leave this part of the Waikato, there is one more place we have to visit: The Putaruru Blue Spring which sits along the Te Waihou Walkway. The Te waihou Walkway follows a winding river of the bluest yet clearest water full of brilliant green river weed. The Putaruru Blue Spring is like something from a fairy tale. There are a few viewing platforms and bridges to take some awesome photos of the Putaruru Blue Spring and get some incredible views of it.
Finally, we are hitting the road to our next stop, Otorohanga and the Waitomo area. Join us tomorrow for what we can promise you is going to be a ridiculously weird day!

WEEKEND IN WAIKATO. DAY 2 /// NEW ZEALAND TRAVEL /// VLOG #24
It's day 2 of our weekend in Waikato. We are continuing our New Zealand Travel and exploring the largest region on the North Island. In this travel video, we share some inspiration on things to do if you are planning to visit Cambridge and surrounding areas.
As you guys know, we have filmed lots of New Zealand travel vlogs and shared many tips with our viewers. But even after travelling around New Zealand for almost 3 years and seeing a lot of beautiful places, this weekend in Waikato impressed us quite a bit. This region is extremely diverse and has a lot of tourist attractions to offer.
In this vlog, we are sharing ideas on how to organise a trip around Waikato. We start our day in Cambridge and explore this beautiful township with many historical buildings. After spending some time here, we drive to Karapiro Lake to see the impressive Karapiro Dam from the lookout. Later we cross the lake using this Dam and drive to Arapuni Suspension Bridge. This is one of the most impressive bridges we have ever seen in our lives! It offers breathtaking views over the river and power plant.

After a night in the Arapuni Backpackers in the Waikato, it’s just a short drive to Sanctuary Mountain, also known as Mount Maungatautari. This is a pest-free wildlife sanctuary surrounded by a predator-proof fence in order to protect some of New Zealand’s most endangered species. What’s more, Sanctuary Mountain is open to the public to come and enjoy the unique wildlife of New Zealand.
We join a tour of one of the enclosures holding beautiful takahe birds and tuatara, a native New Zealand lizard that is a living descendent of the dinosaur era. After seeing and learning about these amazing creatures, we head off into the forest with a conservation team to release some kokakos – some of New Zealand’s most melodic songbirds.
Sanctuary Mountain / Mount Maungatautari has walking tracks within the boundaries of the predator-free area so it’s a great place to spot birds in New Zealand. An awesome New Zealand wildlife experience!

Getting a Jucy Campervan - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 22: Today we’re renting a Jucy campervan in Auckland while our own campervan is in repair. Robin takes the InterCity bus from Hamilton to Auckland then gets the Jucy van.

As you saw yesterday, our campervan needs to be fixed. However, we have 365 Days: 365 Activities to do! We can’t stop now at day 22!! Robin finally finds an awesome campervan to rent for a couple of weeks from Jucy. We are in Hamilton right now so Robin needs to take the bus to Auckland Airport, pick up the Jucy camper and drive back to Hamilton to pick Laura up and move onto the next part of our adventure.
Robin arrives at the Jucy pick-up at the Auckland Airport and is shown all the campervan’s awesome features, where everything is, how to transform the bedding area into a seating area, etc. The model we are getting is a Jucy Condo.
Back on the road, Robin takes the Jucy Condo for its first spin straight down to Hamilton where he meets Laura. We transfer our stuff from one campervan to the other then get on our way to Arapuni and the Arapuni Backpackers.

We hop in the Jucy camper and head on the road to our first stop: Marokopa Falls. The Falls are raging today due to all the wet weather – an awesome sight!
Next on our free activities in Waitomo list is the Mangapohue Natural Bridge – a huge rock archway going over a vertical river gorge. The Natural Bridge and Waterfalls in Waitomo are absolutely stunning.
Then it’s back on the road for another night at the Juno Hall Backpackers.

The Huka Falls are a set of waterfalls on the Waikato River that drains Lake Taupo in New Zealand.
A few hundred metres upstream from the Huka Falls, the Waikato River narrows from approximately 100 metres across into a narrow canyon only 15 metres across. The canyon is carved into lake floor sediments laid down before Taupo's Oruanui eruption 26,500 years ago.[1]
The volume of water flowing through often approaches 220,000 litres per second. The flowrate is regulated by Mighty River Power through the Taupo Control Gates as part of their hydro system planning, with Waikato Regional Council dictating flows during periods of downstream flooding in the Waikato River catchment. At the top of the falls is a set of small waterfalls dropping over about 8 metres. The most impressive, final stage of the falls (pictured here) is an 11 metre drop. The drop is technically six metres (cliff beneath the water) but the water flow raises the level to 11m.
The falls are a popular tourist attraction, being close to Taupo and readily accessible from State Highway One, although there are much higher waterfalls to be seen in the country. Hukafalls Jet takes tourists within a few meters of the base of the falls in their jetboats.
The falls featured in a national scandal in February 1989 when the body of cricket umpire Peter Plumley-Walker was found downsteam, with wrists and ankles bound. The resulting investigation exposed the Auckland bondage scene. Dominatrix Renee Chignall was acquitted of his murder after three trials.[2]
