Furano is situated along the middle reaches of the Sorachi-gawa River in the central part of Hokkaido and it belongs to Furano-Ashibetsu Nature Park. Because of its geographical position, which is almost right in the middle of Hokkaido, Furano has a unique nickname - the navel town. Every summer, a humorous navel festival is held in Furano, during which about 3,000 participants draw funny faces on their bellies and dance around in the main street.Furano's natural beauty can be appreciated throughout the seasons of the year - beautiful stardust in the winter sky, charming 'mizubasho,' Japanese skunk cabbage flowers along the roadside in spring, the inviting fragrance of lavender in summer, and the gloriously red and yellow tinted leaves in fall. The name Furano actually originates from the Ainu (an ethnic group indigenous to Hokkaido) word 'furanui' - meaning fragrant flame. Furano created the Furano Lavender-no-Mori lavender field to commemorate the 80th anniversary of its municipal government. Many people visit the lavender field in summer when the lavender bloom is at its best. Taking a stroll along the path through the forest of sweetly scented lavender is really a must when you visit Furano in summer.

Toursgallery is continually researching new places where we can take people off the beaten tourist track in Japan, to see nature at its best. This video shows you just one example of one of our unusual attractions our guests see on our small group escorted tours.
Hot Springs, Spa Resorts or Onsens can be found all over Japan. Some have their source of water so far underground that Inns owners pay a small fortune to drill into the earth to tap into it. In other places, like the one in this video, the boiling hot water and steam are simply bursting out from cracks in the rocky cliff face in spectacular style. Destination Management Toursgallery had taken a trip here in autumn, just as the first snow was falling, so the cool air enhanced the clouds of steam.
All along the gorge boiling hot waterfalls tumble down the cliff and end up flowing into the clear cold mountain stream. A steep flight of steps through the forest of autumn foliage takes visitors to a boardwalk, which enables visitors to walk through the valley and get within finger poking distance of the super heated steam that is hissing out of the rock.
The owner of the local Inn tells us that she is always treating guests for burnt fingers.
The volcanic hot spring water is too hot to bathe in and the very inviting looking clear mountain stream is just above freezing point. So, the best option is to go back to the Inn where the hot spring bath is just the right temperature.
We do include this spectacular and very picturesque walk in some of our Toursgallery Nature Tours. In fact we have quite a number of 'off the beaten track ' places like this where we take our tour guests to get close to nature.
This is not such a bad place for photography and bird watching either.
