The Best Places to Visit in Maryland
The Best Places to Visit in Maryland
Maryland, also known as “Old Line State”, “Free State”, “Little America” and “America in Miniature”has some really awesome places to visit. This is an apt presentation of the Mid-Atlantic state that offers a little bit of everything. Within its borders, from the seashore (the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean) to the mountains (the Appalachians) to urban areas (Baltimore and the Washington DC suburbs), you will find coastal destinations, waterfront cities, stunning mountains, historic national parks and maritime villages. It’s proximity to Washington, D.C. keeps it modern, but the incredible history of the region means that the state is rooted firmly in the past.

Chincoteague & Assateague Islands - Virginia
Today as we head to the upcoming Truck Camper Rally, we stopped at the Eastern Shore of Virginia for 3 days to see both Chincoteague & Assateague islands!
These are the outermost islands on the coast of Virginia, and proved to be an excellent place to visit! We stayed at a very nice campground, Maddox Family Campground, which was an easy scooter ride onto Assateague Island. On this island, there is much to see including beautiful beaches, a lighthouse, and wild ponies wandering around all over!

CHINCOTEAGUE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
8231 Beach Road
Chincoteague, Virginia 23336
Chincoteague NWR, located primarily on the Virginia side of Assateague Island, consists of more than 14,000 acres of beach, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest. Chincoteague Refuge, originally established in 1943 to provide habitat for migratory birds (with an emphasis on conserving greater snow geese), today provides habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, and song birds, as well as other species of wildlife and plants. Refuge staff manage this barrier island habitat to allow many species of wildlife to coexist, each establishing their own place in the environment. In fact, more than 320 species of birds are known to occur on the refuge. The refuge has been designated a Globally Important Bird Area, is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network and designated as one of the top ten birding Hotspots by the National Audubon Society.
Refuge management programs restore threatened and endangered species such as the Delmarva Peninsula fox squirrel, the bald eagle and the piping plover. More than 2,600 acres of man-made marshes, or moist soil management units, are managed for wintering waterfowl and shorebirds during migration. Unique residents of the island, the famous Chincoteague ponies, are housed in two areas on the refuge through a special agreement with the ponies' owners, the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.
With approximately 1.4 million visits a year, Chincoteague NWR is one of the most visited refuges in the nation. Chincoteague Refuge provides visitors with extraordinary educational and recreational opportunities. In addition, a special partnership exists with the National Park Service which allows Assateague Island National Seashore to administer public activities on a five-mile portion of the refuge beach.
The new Herbert H. Bateman Educational and Administrative Center is currently under the construction phase and will open in 2003. The Center will offer educational exhibits, an auditorium and wet laboratory/classroom for visiting groups.
Ah the Beach, Tent Camping on Assateague Island
I left the RV behind and headed east in my Mom's car. I wanted to explore Maryland's Eastern Shore and go to some places I had never been. Although this is my home state I'm only familiar with the middle parts - Baltimore, Montgomery , Washington and Frederick Counties.
Maryland is a small state. There are parts that you can drive through it in 1/2 hour, but lengthwise is another story. And there are lots of nooks and crannies when you enter Maryland's more watery parts.
So two days and 300 miles later....I arrived at Assateague Island State Park. There are actually 3 different Assateagues. The famous one with Misty's ancestors is on the same Island...but in VA and you have to drive to VA to get to it.
Even though it's on the same island.
On the Maryland side of the island there is a state as well as a national park. The state park campground closed Oct 30 and will re-open April 25th.
I hope you enjoy the sights and sounds of the Atlantic Ocean. I know I did...and I will be back.
