Boundary Waters Canoeing Northern Tier at Atikokan Canada High Adventure
We're off to Canada! Northern Tier High Adventure Scout Camp canoe trip in the boundary waters of Atikokan, Canada.
Northern Tier High Adventure is a collection of high adventure bases run by the Boy Scouts of America in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Minnesota, Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park and Canadian Crown Lands, Manitoba's Atikaki Provincial Wilderness Park and points beyond. Northern Tier is the oldest of the four National High Adventure Bases operated by the Boy Scouts of America; the others currently in operation are: Philmont Scout Ranch, Florida Sea Base and The Summit.
Programs at Northern Tier vary by season. In the summer, participants undertake wilderness canoe excursions. There are no lodgings along these trips, and aircraft and motorboats are heavily restricted. Typical treks may cover 50 to 150 miles and take 6 to 10 days, with a maximum duration of 14 days. Accompanying each crew is a staff member called an Interpreter, formerly known as a Charlie Guide.

Exploring Abandoned Jackfish Ghost Town Ontario
Exploring the old Abandoned Coal Rail Stop Town of Jackfish Ontario! Originally founded as a Train Station between 1883 and 1885, Jackfish became a coal port on Lake Superior in 1895. When the Locomotives started running on diesel in the 1950's, the town declined! The hotel burned in 1960 and by 1963 the town was totally abandoned! A Forest fire a few years ago destroyed a number of buildings but a few still stand! The foundation walls of the hotel basement are still present along with the foundation of the water tower!

Canoe Trip on Eye Lake
My Daughter Erin and I go on a short canoe trip on Eye Lake near Atikokan, Ontairo.
Erin and I have been on many canoe trips together but this was her first time as a bow paddler rather than sitting on a cushion on the bottom of the boat with her sister.
This is a new lake to us so we spent some time exploring.
Canoe tripping (especially short trips) presents a completely different mindset than backpacking. On a short trip like this with no portages you can pretty much bring what you want. Unlike my backpacking trips or longer canoe trips none of the food on this trip was dehydrated. Perishables were frozen and kept cool in an insulated sleeve inside our food barrel.
This was a short relaxing trip that provided lots of opportunity to play with the camera. I'm starting to experiment with time-lapse shooting.
I hope you enjoy!
