Because of how far the islands are from the mainland AND the entire Galapagos cluster of islands is an archipelago of volcanic islands, food & supplies are shipped in, which contributes to higher prices. But you don’t have to spend as much as you think, which allows more travelers to check this destination off their bucket list and experience the Galapagos sooner than people imagine.

Galapagos Islands along with all of Ecuador uses USD as their currency.

Before leaving Guayaquil, we paid for a $20 transit pass at the airport that must be purchased per traveler. Upon arriving to the Seymour Airport on Isla Baltra, we had to pay the $100 Galapagos Island Fee which goes towards maintenance of the islands, conservation, protection of the animals, infrastructure and the employees doing all the work (we found this out from one of the island’s National Park Rangers.)

After going through the airport, there’s a $5 bus fee to go to the Baltra Ferry which is $1 fee to cross the Itabaca Channel. Once you cross the channel, there’s two options to head 40ish km to Puerto Ayora:
Option 1: Take the $25 Taxi which is the island’s “transport” service and is 4-door pick-up truck
Option 2: Take the bus for $5

We ended up splitting the $25 taxi fee with a couple from the Netherlands, as it’s a directional fee, not a per-person fee! SCORE!

Modern residential buildings dominate the townscape of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, that was founded in Spanish colonial times. Quito is the starting point for most journeys through this fascinating county that is situated on the Equator and which offers both cultural as well as many natural attractions and most especially, the Galapagos Islands. The journey to the fascinating animal kingdom of the Galapagops Islands begins in Baquerizo Moreno the largest settlement on the island which also has the largest fishing harbour of the entire archipelago. The rolling movement of the Poseidon, the expedition’s diving boat, provides a hint of the adventures that lie ahead. The remarkable biodiversity of the islands is also evident in the various species of birdlife that are to be found there. As opposed to the reptiles that are endemic, around fifty percent of the world’s bird species inhabit the archipelago. The flame-red Sally Lightfoot Crab that is to be found on most of the rocky coastline is particularly easy to spot on the dark volcanic rocks of the islands. The Humboldt Current that travels from Antarctica and past the South American coast, added to the water that surges up from the depths of the ocean, provides the archipelago with nutrient rich water that attracts huge shoals of fish. The most famous visitor to the islands arrived in 1835 and today the name of scientist Charles Darwin is inseparably associated with the archipelago. Following his stay on the island he formulated the world famous Theory Of Evolution, the theory of natural selection. The fifty islands of the archipelago are one of the great wonders of nature and fortunately have retained their natural beauty right up to the present day.

The Galápagos Islands (official name: Archipiélago de Colón, other Spanish names: Islas Galápagos, Spanish pronunciation: [ɡaˈlapaɣos]) are an archipelago of volcanic islands distributed on either side of the Equator in the Pacific Ocean, 926 km (575 mi) west of continental Ecuador, of which they are a part.

The Galápagos Islands and their surrounding waters form an Ecuadorian province, a national park, and a biological marine reserve. The principal language on the islands is Spanish. The islands have a population of slightly over 25,000.

The islands are famed for their vast number of endemic species and were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

The first recorded visit to the islands happened by chance in 1535, when the Bishop of Panamá Fray Tomás de Berlanga went to Peru to arbitrate in a dispute between Francisco Pizarro and Diego de Almagro. De Berlanga was blown off course, though he eventually returned to the Spanish Empire and described the conditions of the islands and the animals that inhabited them. The group of islands was shown and named in Abraham Ortelius's atlas published in 1570. The first crude map of the islands was made in 1684 by the buccaneer Ambrose Cowley, who named the individual islands after some of his fellow pirates or after British royalty and noblemen. These names were used in the authoritative navigation charts of the islands prepared during the Beagle survey under captain Robert Fitzroy, and in Darwin's popular book The Voyage of the Beagle. The then new Republic of Ecuador took the islands from Spanish ownership in 1832, and subsequently gave the islands official Spanish names.The older names remained in use in English language publications, including Herman Melville's The Encantadas of 1854.

European discovery of the Galápagos Islands occurred when Spaniard Fray Tomás de Berlanga, the fourth Bishop of Panama, sailed to Peru to settle a dispute between Francisco Pizarro and his lieutenants. De Berlanga's vessel drifted off course when the winds diminished, and his party reached the islands on 10 March 1535. According to a 1952 study by Thor Heyerdahl and Arne Skjølsvold, remains of potsherds and other artifacts from several sites on the islands suggest visitation by South American peoples prior to the arrival of the Spanish. However, no remains of graves, ceremonial vessels and constructions have ever been found, suggesting no permanent settlement occurred at the time.

The Galápagos Islands first appeared on the maps, of Gerardus Mercator and Abraham Ortelius, in about 1570. The islands were named Insulae de los Galopegos (Islands of the Tortoises) in reference to the giant tortoises found there.
The first English captain to visit the Galápagos Islands was Richard Hawkins, in 1593. Until the early 19th century, the archipelago was often used as a hideout by mostly English pirates who pilfered Spanish galleons carrying gold and silver from South America to Spain.

In 1793, James Colnett described the flora and fauna of Galápagos, and suggested the islands could be used as base for the whalers operating in the Pacific Ocean. He drew the first accurate navigation charts of the islands. Whalers and maritime fur traders killed and captured thousands of the Galápagos tortoises to extract their fat. The tortoises could be kept on board ship as a means of providing of fresh protein, as these animals could survive for several months on board without any food or water. The hunting of the tortoises was responsible for greatly diminishing, and in some cases eliminating, certain species. Along with whalers came the fur-seal hunters, who brought the population of this animal close to extinction.

The first known permanent human resident on Galapagos was Patrick Watkins, an Irish sailor who was marooned on the Island Floreana from 1807--1809. According to later accounts,[14][15] Watkins managed to survive by hunting, growing vegetables and trading with visiting whalers, before finally stealing an open boat and navigating to Guayaquil.

Quito, formally San Francisco de Quito, is the capital city of Ecuador, and at an elevation of 9,350 feet, it is the highest official capital city in the world. Located in Ecuador, South America, Quito is situated in the Guayllabamba river basin, on the eastern slopes of Pichincha Volcano, an active stratovolcano in the Andes mountains.

Quito is the second most populous city in Ecuador, after Guayaquil. It is also the capital of the Pichincha Province and the seat of the Quito Canton|Metropolitan District of Quito. In 2008, the city was designated as the headquarters of the Union of South American Nations, UNASUR. Quito, a beautiful city and capital of Ecuador, offers great cultural activity throughout its districts and is a great starting point for visits to the rest of Ecuador.

The historic center of Quito has one of the largest, least-altered and best-preserved historic centers in the Americas, and is undoubtedly one of the cities main tourist attractions. Quito, along with Kraków, were the first World Cultural Heritage Sites declared by UNESCO in 1978. The central square of Quito is located about 25 km south of the equator; the city itself extends to within about 1 km of zero latitude. A monument and museum marking the general location of the equator is known locally as Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world), to avoid confusion, as the word ecuador is spanish language for equator.

Quito is roughly divided into three parts: the Old City (Centro Histórico) in the middle, with South (Sur) and North (Norte) districts to either side. The South part is mainly industrial and residential, a working class area. The city's main inter-province bus terminal is located here in the Quitumbe district, as well as the main train station. The North part is the modern Quito, with high-rise buildings, shopping centers, the financial district (locally known as the micro-centro, and upper-class residential areas and some working-class housing areas. This area of Quito is also home to several museums, art galleries and the cities most renown education institutions, as well as home to a variety of restaurants and nightlife options.

The North Part of Quito is also home to the city's largest concentration of parks, with the most new one being Parque Bicentenario. The Old City continues to be Quito's main attraction. Quito's surrounding valleys (Valle de Tumbaco & Valle de los Chillos) also are great weekend get aways, with excellent local ecuadorian cuisine, as well as some great outdoor eco-tourism opportunities.
