The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. It has a striking example of a bergfried designed as a butter-churn tower. Of the 40 hill castles between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz the Marksburg was the only one which was never destroyed.

    Rheinfels Castle is a castle ruin located above the left bank of the Rhine in Sankt Goar, Germany. It was started in 1245 by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen. After expansions, it was the largest fortress in the Middle Rhein Valley between Koblenz and Mainz. It was slighted by French Revolutionary Army troops in 1797. It is the largest castle overlooking the Rhine, and historically covered five times its current area. While much of the castle is a ruin, some of the outer buildings are now a luxury hotel, wellness centre and restaurant. There is also a museum within some of the better preserved structures.

The Romantic Road winds through some of Germany's most picturesque countryside complete with medieval villages and Baroque Palaces. We start our journey in Würzburg where we visit the spectacular Baroque Bishop's Palace or Residenz and taste wine at one of Würzburg's many wine festivals. Next we visit the castle of the Teutonic Knights in Bad Mergentheim and a short distance away the Deutsches Auto Museum in the Renaissance Castle of Prince Hohenlohe-Langenburg. Every July the medieval town of Dinkelsbühl celebrates the day the children saved the town during the Thirty Years War. We get a front row seat complete with dancing, music and an historic reenactment. We finish our trip in Rothenburg, the best preserved medieval walled city in Germany. Tip: Travel options along the Romantic Road.

As we made our way through Europe, we spiralled through the Swiss Alps on the way to Zurich, Switzerland, enjoying cheese fondue, the FIFA museum, bretzels and coffee. We then made our way to Munich where we had our fair share of bier, pretzels, and bratwurst. Is there any better way to experience culture than through food??

A day out in: Würzburg

I visited the historic city of Würzburg (stopping on the way at Veitshöchheim for ice-cream) to admire the old fortress and the gall of modern architects.

The city is testament to the wealth and political power of the Church in times gone by; for centuries Würzburg was ruled by a Prince-Bishop, and this period has left its indelible mark.

Incidentally, after WWII, the plan was to leave Würzburg desolate, a huge ghost city as a reminder of the war. This plan was rejected, and the city rebuilt.

The Alte Mainbrücke is the oldest bridge in Würzburg and connects the city center with the Mainviertel and the Marienberg, where the fortress stands.
Die Alte Mainbrücke ist die älteste Brücke in Würzburg und verbindet das Stadtzentrum mit dem Mainviertel und dem Marienberg, auf dem die Festung steht.

Day 44 - Germany: Köln (Cologne) & Bad Marienberg

My first full day in Germany on this particular trip. I started out from the Rasthof and spend several hours in Köln before hitching a ride out to Bad Marienberg where I was hosted by the lovely Patricia, whom I'd met in Umeå, Sweden, and her boyfriend Jürgen. :D
