YOGYAKARTA or JOGJA as it’s known to the locals has an INCREDIBLE FOOD CULTURE so we take you on a Jogja street food tour of some of Jogja’s most delicious Indonesian street food.
Jogja is the place to visit if you want to sample some traditional Javanese food. In this INDONESIA series we’re HUNTING down LOCAL spots and eating where the LOCALS EAT. We start our food hunting with one of the best meals we ate during our time in Jogja: sate klathak at Satay Klathak Pak Pong. This restaurant specialises in all things kambing or goat. We eat the satay klathak- goat meat threaded onto bicycle spoke skewers, seasoned lightly with salt and pepper and then cooked over hot charcoal together with tengkleng a traditional stew made up of goat ribs, bones and offal. Finger licking good!
We then head for rujak ice cream from a tiny street stall which serves its rujak (local fruit salad) topped with homemade ice cream. Refreshing and sweet- this place is a locals favourite.
In the evening we head to a popular noodle spot for Javanese fried noodles. We eat the bakmi godhog campur which is made up of vermicelli, yellow noodles and chicken served in a flavoursome chicken broth as well as the magelangan, a wok tossed concoction made up of both rice and noodles. This is comfort food at its finest.
To finish we hunt down a street food stall selling wedang ronde, a local dessert made up of peanut stuffed glutinous rice dumplings, palm fruit, peanuts and tiny cubes of bread in a spicy ginger broth. An epic day of food hunting!
