1. Bear Valley Bear Valley
The Battle of Bear Valley was a small engagement fought in 1918 between a band of Yaquis and a detachment of United States Army soldiers. On January 9, 1918, elements of the American 10th Cavalry Regiment detected about thirty armed Yaquis in Bear Valley, Arizona, a large area that was commonly used as a passage across the international border with Mexico. A short firefight ensued, which resulted in the death of the Yaqui commander and the capture of nine others. Though the conflict was merely a skirmish, it was the last time the United States Army engaged hostile Native Americans in combat and thus has been seen as one of the final battles of the American Indian Wars.

The Off-Road Trails of Big Bear Lake

A lot of people don’t expect to find alpine scenery when they come to Southern California, but the Inland Empire’s Big Bear area abounds with it. Located at about 6,700-feet/2,000-meter elevation, Big Bear Lake and its surrounding peaks offer all-season fun, from winter sports at Big Bear Mountain and Snow Summit to hiking, cycling, water sports, and helicopter rides during the summer. Highway 395 is one of my favorite roads in California. There are so many amazing hikes, lakes, restaurants, historic spots and photographic opportunities all up and down the drive. Amie and I were invited by Yosemite Gateway Chalet to spend 4 days exploring, and we jumped at the chance. This video focuses on the area from Mammoth Lakes to June Lake but shows lots of other spots you can explore around those areas as well.
