HOLLAND: Schoorl village & dune forest [HD]
The village of Schoorl lies on the coast of North Holland close to Alkmaar.
It is separated from the coast by the highest and widest dune range in the Netherlands.
The dunes reach about 54 m above sea level, right behind the center of Schoorl, and are more than 5 km wide.
Traditionally, farmers collected sand from the dunes to mix it with the clay of the polders.
As a result, sandy spaces developed that are also known as 'climbing dunes'. Children in particular have a whale of a time climbing up and tumbling down the hills - the largest sandpit in the Netherlands.
Schoorl is a major local tourism location in the summer and counts over 25 campsites, the largest concentration of campsites in the Netherlands.
The village, earlier named Scorel contains evidence of a long history in the form of the old council house aging from 1601. There's also a 17th century reformed church.
The Dutch painter and evangelist Jan van Scorel was born here. Jan van Scorel (1495-1562) was an influential Dutch painter credited with the introduction of High Italian Renaissance art to the Netherlands.

The Netherlands from above - E2/10 - The hungry jaws of Europe
This series shows The Netherlands from a spectacular perspective. Through data visualizations, impressive aerial images and portraits of people on the ground, we show who we are and how time changes and has changed the country.
The Netherlands was once almost all swamp, a place where water ruled. Now it's a place where hundreds of ships come to each day, full of oil, cars and containers.

Valkenburg Castle ruins, Limburg, Netherlands
Spring military history tour of the medieval Kasteelruïne Valkenburg -- Valkenburg Castle ruins -- in Limburg, the Netherlands. The thing I like about the castle is they let you go where you want, so you get a better chance to explore. Lots of good info signs. Kind of surprised they built it out of sandstone, though. (Mainly for resistance to assault, but also graffiti, of which the town has a lot as most of the old buildings are also sandstone.) They have a great Christmas market in the castle dungeon, but being May it was not open. ;-)

The Hague - The Hague Tower
With 42 floors and 132 meters, The Hague Tower ('Haagse Toren') is one of the tallest skyscrapers of the city and the highest building you can visit in The Netherlands. Inspired by the famous Flat Iron Building in New York, the building hosts many unique and versatile attractions. At the Veranda Café, the Netherlands' highest terrace, you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. And if you're in for a delicious diner the Penthouse Restaurant's menu offers a wide choice and good wines. From the upper floors of the Haagse Toren you can enjoy breathtaking views as far as 45kms: the skyline of The Hague, the coastline to Hook of Holland to the centre of Rotterdam, Delft and Leiden.
