Cali may not be as scenic as Medellín or cosmopolitan as Bogotá, but the vibrant attitude of the local caleños is enough to win you over. As a society built upon the blending of indigenous, African and Spanish traditions, diversity and open-mindedness form the base of the caleño culture. Colombia is famous for its salsa dancing, and Cali is considered the salsa capital of the world. Caleños live and breath to the music’s energetic pulse, as you will hear it everywhere you go, from buses and taxis to salsa bars, restaurants and tiendas.
Sebastián de Belalcázar arrived in the Valle del Cauca, Colombia, in 1536, where he dubbed his new settlement Santiago de Cali. The fertile valley was inhabited by various indigenous groups, of which the Calima community was the most advanced. They initially offered stiff resistance to the Spanish presence, though the real impediment to growth was Popayán's proximity to Cali. Popayán was the political and economic center of the region until the end of the 19th century.
Popayán's wealth came from the sugar plantations around Cali and the Spaniards shipped in thousands of African slaves over the centuries, and the African legacy is still very much in evidence today, as a significant portion of the population in Cali is of African or mixed African and European descent.
Cali is the capital of Valle del Cauca and is home to half of the department's population, as well as being the third-largest city in Colombia. Cali is the dominant industrial, agricultural and commercial center of the southwest of Colombia.

The city center of Cali boasts several historical monuments and churches. Iglesia La Merced is is where the city’s inaugural Mass was held here on 25 July 1536, and is part of the La Merced Museum of Colonial Religious Art complex and was declared a National Monument of Colombia in 1975. Within the church’s former convent, you can view colonial religious art and pre-Colombian pottery and artifacts at the Museo de Arte Religoso La Merced and the Museo Arqueológico La Merced, respectively. Just one block away, you can view a small collection of gold and pottery of the Calima culture at the Museo del Oro.
The 16th-century hillside barrio San Antonio is popular with travelers to Cali, Colombia. The barrio was once home to writers, artists and musicians. It is the bohemian quarter of Cali, where you will find street musicians entertain passersby and old colonial buildings house hipster cafés, restaurants and antique stores. The steps of the 18th-century Iglesia de San Antonio offer great views of the sprawling Cali below.
There is a well-established appreciation for contemporary art and indie films in Cali and Colombia. Museo de Arte Moderno La Tertulia is considered the main cultural and artistic hub of Cali, the museum consists of a large exhibition hall where over 1300 works of art by both Colombian and international artists are on display. The complex also houses a library specialising in art, film, photography and architecture.

Cali is the second city of the country .Has a tropical weather, this beautiful city has wonderful places to visit. Stroll along the river and stop to see the statue of the cat. Visit places of interest. The Statue of Belalcázar, Cristo Rey, visiting old churches, The Ermita, The Merced, San Antonio. Or just enjoy the scenery giving himself a nice break from Pance river.

Una de las regiones más hermosas para los visitantes de Colombia es la región del café, la zona Cafetera. Se encuentra en las tierras altas al oeste de Bogotá entre Medellín y Cali. El paisaje se caracteriza por laderas verdes y pintorescas ciudades pequeñas. La hermosa naturaleza, un clima templado, gente amable, puntos de vista, baños termales y mucho más, le invita a actividades.

In Colombia, when people refer to Cali, they are never referring to the state in the US, they are referring to the 3rd largest city in Colombia, named Cali. That is not short for anything, Cali is just Cali and is a big sprawling city in the south of Colombia. Admittedly, not my favourite place in Colombia, Cali is still a great city and a lot of fun and worth the visit, it is just difficult to compete with other cities in Colombia, and Cali is up against some stiff competition!
That being said, I enjoyed a few days in Cali and walk up the hill to the Cristo Rey statue and Cristo Rey viewpoint looking over the sprawling Cali and surrounding areas of the city. The Cristo Rey is a statue very similar to the Christ the Redeemer or Cristo Redentor statue in Brazil, and sits on a big ridge behind Cali giving you a stunning view of not only the city, but the countryside of Colombia.
There are other hills and viewpoints other than Cristo Rey, but this one is probably the best in Cali and worth a morning or an afternoon.
After climbing up Cristo Rey Cali Colombia Statue we we treated to some classic Colombian help as a truck driver told us to hop in the back of his truck to take us into Cali where we could get a bus back to our hostel.
Love Colombia and you should travel Colombia one day as it is one of the best countries on this marble we call earth!

Viajar Eje Cafetero Colombia - Santuario Parque Nacional Natural Tatamá desde el Aire
El municipio de Santuario, conocido como la joya patrimonial de Risaralda se sitúa en el departamento de Risaralda en Colombia y fue fundado el 20 de julio de 1886. Es un lugar lleno de encanto, debido a su arquitectura colonial con casas coloridas, sus plazas y monumentos; tales como: la calle real, el palacio municipal, el arco de Nuestra Señora del Carmen y el templo de la Inmaculada Concepción.
Cuenta con bosques húmedos premontano con temperaturas que varían entre los 18 y 24 grados y los cultivos de cafe, caña de azúcar, granadilla y plátano, son las actividades agrícolas más importantes para este sector.
Es la oportunidad perfecta para conocer la cultura colombiana y su historia. Sus habitantes tienen un profundo respeto por sus creencias religiosas, son amables, serviciales y trabajadores.
En este territorio se encuentra el Parque Nacional Natural Tatamá un parque muy importante por su biodiversidad, y la belleza de sus paisajes. Cuenta actualmente con 51.900 hectáreas y es un área protegida de interés científico que cuenta con un páramo virgen (Páramo de Tatamá) y variedad de especies animales (oso anteojos, ratón de monte, dantas, puerco espín, pumas, colibríes, ranas, tucán de montaña, etc…) y vegetales (naranjuelo, algarrobo, cedrillo y chontaduro).
Es el lugar perfecto para el ecoturismo, visitar el Parque Tatama y recorrer el sendero de las Cascadas es una experiencia inolvidable para disfrutar de la extraordinaria vegetación.

Monumento de El Gato del Río y sus novias en Cali Colombia. Obra de bronce de Hernando Tejada
El Gato del Río es una obra del pintor y escultor Hernando Tejada la cual donó a la ciudad de Cali y que fue instalada en la ribera del río tutelar de la ciudad, Sin duda, es uno de los monumentos más emblemáticos de la ciudad, inaugurada el 3 de julio de 1996.
El monumento fue ubicado en el borde del Río Cali es fundida en bronce, con un peso de 3 toneladas, una longitud de tres punto cinco metros de alto y tres punto cuatro metros de ancho.
Para realzar los espacios aledaños a dicho monumento, la cámara de comercio de Cali impulsó la actividad llamada “Las novias del gato” introduciendo más de quince esculturas de gatas elaboradas por reconocidos artistas colombianos. Y No solo se ven las figuras de las gatas en éste lugar, sino que también pudimos ver otras diferentes en otros lugares como en el boulevard y zoológico de Cali.
Sin duda éste es uno de los lugares imperdibles cuando visites Cali.
