DOLPO SHEY PHOKSUNDO (Phoksumdo) Trekking, NEPAL - a Memorable Adventure

Dolpa and Phoksumdo (yep, not a spelling mistake) were always on our bucket list. We finally did the Dolpo Trek this year. The 12 day trip consisted of crazy road trips at the beginning, trekking through vastly different landscapes and flight back home which offered some spectacular views.

One of the best views and the bluest clearest waters that we've ever been to. But what makes it even better? The people. Yes, the people might be one of main reasons we want to go back. They make you feel at home away from home.

And yeah, not to forget our drone crash. The drone recovery was a experience on its own as we went over a cliff to get to it.

Dunai is the district headquarters of Dolpa District in Nepal. The town is on the banks of the Thuli Bheri River at about 2,000 metres (6,562 ft) elevation.
The 1991 Nepal census counted 1,773 persons in 334 households.
Dunai has one FM radio station: Radio Dolpa 101.4 MHz which is a community radio station. There is one hospital: the 15-bed Dolpa District Hospital.

In education, there is the Dolpa Campus affiliated with Tribhuvan University, one high school: Sarswoti Higher Secondary School affiliated with HSEB, and the Dunai Community Library which is a community learning center.

Dolpa District डोल्पा जिल्ला is one of the ten districts of Province No. 6 in Nepal. The district, with Dunai as its district headquarters.

Tourism
Dolpa region is a distant region of Nepal and the central point of this area is Shey Phoksumdo National Park. The east and south of Dolpa are surrounded by the Dhaulagiri and Churen Himal ranges and to the west is the Jumla district. Trekking to Lower Dolpa offers you the remarkable and breathtaking experience of a lifetime. The notable features seen here are snowy peaks, ancient and remote villages, rich wildlife, lovely Buddhist monasteries and wonderful lakes. The people of this area are simple and warm-hearted with an enthralling culture and traditions. The cultural traditions of this area are basically linked with the Tibetan culture.

Trekking into Dolpa presents an exposure to the high and remote Himalayan valleys, resembling the Tibetan highlands. The main highlight of Dolpa trekking includes “Shey Phoksundo National Park” which is one of the major National Parks of Nepal. “Shey Phoksundo Lake” is another famous feature of this region. The lake is totally free of aquatic life, which the crystal waters clearly demonstrate. Surrounded by rocks, forests, and snow-capped peaks, the area has been described as one of the world's “Natural Hidden Wonders”.

The Dolpa trekking starts at Juphal and follows the track to Dunai, then continues to Tarakot, way up to Bang la Camp, the uppermost point of Dolpa trekking. After passing through Sanu Bheri village, we then descend to the good-looking Phoksundo Lake, which is a piece of the Shey Phoksundo National Park.

In Nepal, Terai is differentiated into outer and inner Terai.

Outer Terai begins at the alluvial, generally forested and often marshy zone along the southern edge of the ~700 metre Siwalik Range -- the first and lowest range of Himalayan foothills. In Nepalese usage Terai extends to the border with India and includes drier, mostly cleared agricultural land below the marshes. Indian usage is more tied to hydrology and ecology. In some places the wetter ecoregion extends kilometers south of the Nepal border into India.

Most of the local population is ethnically Indian, natively speaking Hindi and dialects such as Awadhi, Bhojpuri and Maithili. They were largely disenfranchised during the Shah and Rana regimes that were largely administered by and for Paharis. This discrimination gave rise to political movements seeking greater representation.

Inner Terai refers to elongated valleys lying between the Siwalik Range and the 2-3,000 metre Mahabharat Range further north. In India these valleys are called Duns, e.g. Dehra Dun. Most of these valleys extend east-west or SSE-WNW parallel to enclosing ranges. They are five to ten kilometers wide and up to a hundred kilometers long.

Inner Terai valleys historically were agriculturally productive but extremely malarial. Indigenous Tharu people had a degree of inherited resistance and populated these areas. A malaria eradication campaign opened the Inner Terai to settlers from the hills to the north and from neighbouring India, to the detriment of indigenous peoples.

Important towns in the Inner Terai are:

Triyuga in Kamala
Kamalamai in Marin Khola
Bharatpur (Narayangadh), Hetauda, and Tandi in Chitwan
Tulsipur and Tribhuvannagar (Ghorahi) in Dang
Birendranagar in Surkhet.

Wetter, more malarial parts of the Terai were left forested by official decree during the Rana dynasty as a defensive perimeter called Char Kose Jhadi (four kos forest, one kos equalling about three km or two miles).

Mahendra Highway crosses the Nepal Terai from Kakarbhitta on the eastern border in Jhapa District, Mechi Zone to Mahendranagar near the western border in Kanchanpur District, Mahakali Zone. It is the only motor road spanning the country from east to west.

Major cities like Bharatpur, Biratnagar, Bhairawa, Birgunj are well connected with airports. The most interesting places to visit are

Lumbini, considered to be the birth place of Buddha;
Bardia National Park,
Chitwan National Park
Janakpur - the birthplace of Sita, where she married Rama, described in the epic Ramayana.

This is our journey to the remote Darchula's Api Base Camp. This april, we trekked to the lesser known Base Camp of Nepal inside the Api Nampa Conservation Area.

And man, it was a tough trek. Although a short distance, the uphills, drastic altitude changes and the landscape made the trek super hard and tiring. But, the people, the culture and the views we witnessed during the trip made it all worthwhile.

P.S. we had drone issues again. We've included some so-so drone shots in the video.

Birendranagar वीरेन्द्रनगर is a city in mid-western Nepal, located in the Surkhet District of Bheri Zone. At the 2011 census the city's population was 52,137 in 12,045 households. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 22,937 people residing in 4773 individual households.

This city is located in the Surkhet Valley and this is headquarter of pardesh no 6, and is a principal township in the western hills region of Nepal. Birendranagar is so named in honour of the late King Birendra, who planned and established it as the first planned town in Nepal.

Birendranagar is surrounding by hills and made it valley. A lot of area of valley are assigned as Birendranagar Municipality included village development committee are Uttarganga, Latikoili.

Kakre Bihar
Kakre Bihar is a small hillock in the middle of the Surkhet Valley. On top of this hillock is a ruin of a 12th-century stone temple, which shows that the people of the region practiced Hinduism along with Buddhism. The carved stones and bronze statues reflect the images of Buddha, and many Hindu gods and goddesses including Saraswati and Ganesh. This Hindu-Buddhist temple is protected by the government and there is a plan in place to re-erect the structure to its original shape. Architects are working hard to put all the pieces together so as to come up with a model of the temple. Boasting an amazing view of Birendranagar, this beautiful place continuously ranks as one of the most important tourist destinations. Thousands of people come to the area for religious purposes as well as to experience the rejuvenating atmosphere of nature. Important archaeological, cultural and religious exhibits can be found in the city museum, which preserves facts about the place.

Jumla District जुम्ला जिल्ला a part of Province No. 6, is one of the seventy-five districts of Nepal. The district, with Jumla as its district headquarters, covers an area of 2,531 km² and had a population of 89,427 in 2001 and 108,921 in 2011.
The origin of Nepali language is Sinja of Jumla. Therefore, the Nepali dialect Khas Bhasa is still spoken among the people in this region.
Jumla is the centre of Chandannath municipality in Jumla District and of Karnali Zone of Nepal, a landlocked country of South Asia. It is located at 2514 metres (8251 feet) elevation.

Jumla Airport (IATA: JUM, ICAO: VNJL) is an airport serving Jumla, the capital of the Jumla District in Province No. 6 in Nepal. The airport is capable to handle aircraft from the Nepalese Army Air Service.
Accidents and incidents
5 July 1992 - RNA De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter 300 (9N-ABB), lost directional control on takeoff from Jumla Airport on a flight to Surkhet. The aircraft ran off the runway and struck the airport perimeter fence. None of the three crew were injured and there were no passengers on board.
18 January 1999 - Necon Air Cessna 208 Caravan I (9N-ADA) climbed steeply to 450 feet (140 m) after takeoff from Jumla Airport, but stalled and crashed and caught fire. The fire could not be extinguished because fire fighting equipment was not available at the airport. Of 10 passengers and 2 crew, 4 passengers and 1 crew member were killed. The probable cause of the accident was the pilot's failure to put the aircraft in take off configuration.
21 June 2006 - A Yeti Airlines De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter Series 300 (9N-AEQ), on a flight from Surkhet approaching Jumla Airport, the pilot apparently decided to go around. The aircraft crashed into a mountainside on the eastern side of the airport killing all three crew and six passengers.
